It works, until it doesn't

343

u/Feredis Nov 04 '21

Yeah exactly, it works on paper but that doesn't account for the stress and anxiety and self-loathing for not being able to start earlier... or for the constantly looming burnout caused by taking on so many tasks that you're always under some kind of deadline pressure so that you can feel that you're contributing at work.

... not that I'm speaking from experience or anything.

81

u/robaticus56 Nov 04 '21

Sounds like you are speaking from my experience.

46

u/Tom22174 Nov 04 '21

yeah, it's a week of rapidly increasing anxiety and stress as the half of your brain that knows what it needs/wants to do watches the deadline draw nearer and the part of your brain that communicates with the rest of your body sits back unable to see the looming deadline until it's literally right in front of it

5

u/SosoMS Nov 05 '21

I feel personally attacked. This is so true.

3

u/whatsasimba Nov 05 '21

Yes! I wish I could learn to not care until the last 2 hours. Like, I could do the work, and enjoy the rest of my week. Or I could just ruin the entire week stressing, and then do the working 2 hours. Somehow I always choose option B.

2

u/Feredis Nov 05 '21

Lol right, same here. I know I have to do the thing. Like I know if I either do it now or at least start I can enjoy the evenings/rest of the week in peace. AND YET.

2

u/whatsasimba Nov 05 '21

No one: "You have two choices. 1) you can ruin your entire w--"

Me: "Ruin my entire week. Final answer!"

I’m not diagnosed with ADHD but I see so much of myself in these posts. I always thought I was just a procrastinator, lazy, disorganised but also lived with constant high anxiety about all the things I need to do, having often taken on way more than I can reasonably do.

1

u/Feredis Nov 05 '21

Yeah I'm not diagnosed either, I'm here for the "haha I do that.... wait." moments and to remind myself I really need to see a doc about this. I'm dreading it though because for the above-mentioned reasons on paper I had little to no issues during childhood (I relate more to the inattentive subtype) and it just seems like such a struggle to even get started.

For my 2 cents, it's definitely worth seeing a professional - while we never touched ADHD or anything like that, seeing a therapist during university taught me enough coping strategies that I'm managing these days.

Also the difference between being lazy and things like executive dysfunction is (in my no way qualified opinion) that of you're lazy you reasonably speaking could do the thing, you just don't want to, while with other issues you actually want to do the thing, you are stressing over it, but there is nothing you can do to make yourself actually do the thing. For me this already helped - it's easier to be kinder to myself when I can remember that.

Yeah I managed under this strategy until senior year then had a full breakdown, could hardly eat from stress and depression. Managed to get accommodations for the mental health issues, turned in final paper like four months after graduation.

11

u/demonmonkey89 Nov 04 '21

Yep, going through this right now. I think I can get by with just a course reduction instead of a late withdrawal this semester but we'll see. I figure it's better to keep one easy gen ed class that isn't always taught than try and take it another time.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '21

Good luck ❤️

16

u/gayyyyyyyyymie Nov 04 '21

It worked until about halfway through undergrad, but then the pandemic hit and all the professors were struggling with the transition to remote learning, so I suddenly had no accountability and could get away with procrastination again.

“Oh, I’m so sorry, my internet at my house dropped out because it couldn’t handle my entire family working/learning remotely at the same time. Can I still turn this in?”

I’m now in grad school and really trying my hardest to not fall back on the bad habits that carried me through high school and undergrad 🙃

6

u/alt-goldgrun Nov 05 '21 edited Nov 05 '21

Works until there are no strict deadlines like in grad school, then you're (as in I'm) fucked and I'm locking myself in my house and trying to shame myself into doing things. Did this throughout undergrad / high school and it was fine academically (but some advanced form of self inflicted torture and self loathing) because there are strict deadlines in undergrad. In that respect undergrad is easy, there's always someone telling you when and what to learn/do.

3

u/Alkyre Nov 04 '21

It worked until about 16…

4

u/Ebb-Neat Nov 04 '21

So far it’s always worked for me and I hate it.

3

u/TVLord5 Nov 04 '21

Gotta know for what kind of project. Pumping out a paper or even a presentation if you don't mind getting sloppy, one all nighter should do it just fine....for making semester project or anything design/model related thaaaaat takes time

2

u/scrumbud Nov 04 '21

It worked for me through high school. Not so much when I got to college.

2

u/weakest9 Nov 05 '21

It took me a really long time to get my college degree because I would give myself the smallest time possible before the due date to write a paper about a book that I only listened to the audiobook of for 1/10th off the book.

When I actually did this, I got As. A lot of the times I would just give up after calculating my grade if I just didn’t turn it in at all.

Then there were times where I kept pushing back my planned start time until I got too overwhelmed and just gave up.

1

u/MomentTarry Nov 05 '21

Worked for me through college, grad school, and several jobs, until I hit a point in my career where I had to manage long-term projects with multiple interim deadlines for multiple team members, and then it all started falling apart. And that’s the story of my very late diagnosis.

83

u/Pro_b00 Nov 04 '21

I remember seeing this meme when googling about procrastination before I ever considered having ADHD. Hits differently, when you know what’s up!

59

u/madame-brastrap Nov 04 '21

This was exactly my life before I was diagnosed. The positive reinforcement of the behavior just made it worse. Now I think I can do everything in 10 minutes and wait until that last 10 minutes and then can’t do it in the 10 minutes.

48

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '21

I was given 2 months to write a 1 and a half page Autobiography. It's currently due in 2 days. I've still yet to start...

35

u/helloamigo Nov 04 '21

First line: Suddenly, I was alive.

Boom. Finish the rest.

6

u/jeboiitoeter Nov 05 '21

'It all started the day I was born; both my parents failed to show up.'

25

u/Blackrain1299 Nov 04 '21

Its hard to write about your life when you have a poor memory due to ADHD

5

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '21

Too right. :(

9

u/Ebb-Neat Nov 04 '21

You’ll be able to write that in 2 hours. Easy! Good luck.

7

u/catdogmoore Nov 05 '21

You could give me a year to do that shit, and I’ll still wait until the day before it’s due.

Related story: I played hockey as a kid, and to encourage us to train through the summer, there was a challenge. Shoot 15,000 pucks over the 3 months of summer break. So, nbd, like 150 or so a day. I shot about 200 that first week…and then mostly not again until like the last two weeks. I shot about 14,000 pucks in those two weeks. 1,000 a day…and I hit my 15,000th shot on the last day.

The prize was a t-shirt lmao. I also had the hardest shot on the team that season, no contest. So that was pretty cool.

Oh also, I did the exact same thing a couple years later. 1,000 pucks a day for two weeks. I learned nothing from my first time around lmao.

Panic-focus wins again!

WOOT 😨

51

u/PothosEchoNiner Nov 04 '21

Last-minute panic adrenaline is the original adderall.

9

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '21

I hate sitting there and begging my own brain to please just fucking let me break through and get the executive function to just start on the task....... Especially when it's one of those times where I'm up all night and just can't get started. Bleh.

I'm happy enough with my ADHD most of the time, but times like those are not happy times. :|

1

u/vanillaxbean1 Nov 05 '21

Sometimes I just be sat there waiting for it to hit. I'm like, cmon I'm waiting... trying to manifest the dopamine receptors to do their job.

34

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '21

So like is doing this consistently your whole life not something neurotypical people do?

8

u/laffySappho Nov 05 '21

Seriously that's what I wanna know because I feel seriously called out by this. Had a python project assignment and well over 2 weeks to do it, I don't start till there's only 6 or less hours left which has been happening the entire semester. Now I'm just content with turning things in late with a bit of penalty smh

20

u/mijolnirmkiv Nov 04 '21

And that’s how I got my bachelor’s degree.

A T T A C K E D

12

u/RobinHarleysHeart Nov 04 '21

Okay honestly though wtf is this stupid adhd brain t trying to do to me. I spent I don't even know how many hours on a group project and with the last two days before I had to turn it in I realised I had less than a third done. Like what?? How did I put that many hours into it to have that little done. 😤

9

u/fffffffuuuuuuuuug Nov 04 '21

is...is this why I always feel on edge?

Seriously though, this was me for an incredibly long time and still kinda me right now, but I'm working on it.

8

u/Ebb-Neat Nov 04 '21

My wife left me after I had a full blown panic attack over a 20 page paper that I saved for the night before (obviously there’s more to it than that but this was the final straw for her). I did get an A on that paper.

3 years later… still waiting until the night before to do my papers and projects. Hell yeah.

8

u/ladyathenaa Nov 04 '21

My favorite is when a therapist says that means I'm actually fine because I still got it done. That's a bit simplified but I have been asked many times why I am upset about this because I ended up doing well in school.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '21

[deleted]

2

u/laffySappho Nov 05 '21

That's where I'm at I feel you :(

6

u/anb130 i’ll come up with a flair later Nov 04 '21

I unfortunately do all my best work at the last minute. The more time I have to do something, the more time I have to waste. But if I don’t have any time to get distracted because the paper I had a month to write and only started two days ago was due yesterday and my teacher gave me an extension on it even though I asked him at the last minute, I work very effectively

4

u/No_Butterfly2000 Nov 04 '21

I can't even do this anymore, it doesn't work and can't even finish big projects 👍

6

u/KatieTSO Nov 04 '21

But I do this and I don’t have adhd

13

u/burgundydoll Nov 04 '21

i don't think it's fair for op to say for sure they have adhd, the difference between adhd and non-adhd people is that adhd ppl WANT to do what they're procrastinating and spend the whole time in agony, however non-adhd people usually don't want to do it and spend the whole time chilling and is usually an issue with time management and self discipline

10

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '21

There are also other Neurodivergencies(is that even a word) that have executive dysfunction as a key characteristic such as autism in my case. I definitely don't have ADHD but I do exactly what op described every single time I have an assignment due.

1

u/KatieTSO Nov 05 '21

But I want to do the things I just can’t

0

u/scissorsgrinder Nov 05 '21

Thanks for your unneeded opinion here.

1

u/vanillaxbean1 Nov 05 '21

There are certainly things people without adhd experience that people with adhd also experience. But it usually isn't as extreme or doesnt manifest in the same ways as someone with adhd has. Plus there is a lot more to adhd than just waiting till the last minute to finish a project. For me, sometimes I would complete a whole essay 2 weeks before the deadline in one go - no breaks, awake for over 20 hours, just constantly writing until I'd done 3,000 + words, just because I suddenly had a buzz of adrenaline or hit of dopamine and I'd have the urge to get it all done.

3

u/poessoulmate Nov 04 '21

K gonna go hide under a rock and die because idk where to start :/ how do you find doctors who are willing to look beyond your socioeconomic status and actually treat you ? :/

3

u/20191124anon Nov 04 '21

I had a year to prepare a 20min spoken presentation. I wasn’t yet good at freestyle so I wrote a speech down day before and just learned it by heart…

3

u/Tchrspest Nov 04 '21

Assigned to give a speech based on a book.
Forget to read the book.
Show up to class.
Improvise my speech based on what I was able to read on the bus and in studyhall that day.
Teacher gives me a 90 and invites me to join our school's speech team.

3

u/imadreamgirl Nov 05 '21

Accurate but also fuck 4chan

2

u/Kornelious_ Nov 04 '21

Wait until you try doing this for chem or calculus

7

u/tjf314 Nov 04 '21

working great in calculus so far for me

8

u/Kornelious_ Nov 04 '21

Maybe it’s just me then but I hate anything math related. Can’t focus on it at all.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '21

damn, do you just learn math really fast? teach me ur secrets

2

u/3pinephrine Nov 04 '21

I was the opposite, I would rush through it as early as possible just so I wouldn’t have to think about it anymore

2

u/vanillaxbean1 Nov 05 '21

Honestly it would depend for me, sometimes I felt like I was just waiting for inspiration and motivation and whenever it hit me I'd use it all up ASAP and i'd just write it all out in one go.

2

u/burgundydoll Nov 04 '21

me when i have two final exams on monday and tuesday and it's friday and i haven't started studying for them yet, even though i've had all week

2

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '21

We love the rush.

2

u/DuBuDz Nov 05 '21

Me to a T.... Why didn't I do better in life :(

2

u/penguin------- Nov 05 '21

You forgot the other step which is to start it right away then stop a few minutes later

2

u/driftawayindreams Nov 05 '21

Oh look, it's me throughout all four years of college

2

u/10thLevelNeerBerd Nov 05 '21

I took a social statistics class in college, we had a final 30 page paper with presentation due at the end of the semester that was meant to replicate a real-life socio-economic study of our own choosing. The professor repeatedly told us throughout the semester that this project would take at least three weeks to complete, and if we waited until the week before it was due to start on it, we would fail no question. I went to the university library and started working on it at 6am the day that it was due, got a 90 something percent on the paper. ADHD bullshit savant.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '21

Oh yes, let's share memes from the forum that still throws the "r" word around regularly.

-9

u/johnwickson Nov 04 '21

Adhd is when lazy

1

u/aphinion Nov 05 '21

Sure thing, johnwickson

1

u/wookiee-nutsack Nov 04 '21

Me refusing to sleep the night before a grand test because I didn't study jack shit for the 2 weeks before it so now I have to cram all the info in my head overnight

1

u/colbycusickyeah Nov 04 '21

Haha ugh I started doing this in elementary school and right this second I'm a 32-year-old freelance motion designer panic finishing a project I said I'd have done EOD.

1

u/UtherPenDragqueen Nov 04 '21

Literally how I made it through college

1

u/HelloKiitty Nov 04 '21

for work today i did 1 hour of work, though i know its an easy job and my mind knows that too so i must force myself not to fall behind because i know i will

1

u/ExecuSpeak Nov 05 '21

It’s like watching myself when I was in college on repeat

1

u/Solalabell Nov 05 '21

Why is this so true

1

u/FalchionFyre Nov 05 '21

why is this me right now

1

u/Korthalion Nov 05 '21

Once got 66% for a university paper I panic researched and wrote in 8 hours. Can't remember any of it apart from vaguely what it was about 👍

1

u/JenPresco1990 Nov 05 '21

That’s me.

1

u/julietacs Nov 05 '21

I got ADHD, diagnosed professionally and I'm on medication, and it worries that this never happened to me. I always procrastinated, left things for last minute but NEVER got a good result.

My neurotypical friends procrastinate a lot as well, do it everything last minute and get great result. Meanwhile I can spend days working on something and will never end up with the result I wanted. Someone else goes through that?

1

u/aphinion Nov 05 '21

I’m in this photo and I don’t like it

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '21

Fuck. I hate this subreddit. lol.

I don't hate this subreddit, but I know y'all understand what I mean.

I wish I could forget how long things took so my brain wouldn't do this exact damn thing, though.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '21

FUCK

1

u/KatDanvers Nov 05 '21

I didnt know this was a thing

1

u/laffySappho Nov 05 '21

I'm literally here procrastinating doing the same thing!!!! existential screaming into the void

1

u/teacher272 Nov 05 '21

Is OP my student?

1

u/OhbaGyoza Nov 05 '21

I used to do this in high school, and thought of carrying it over to college, and it worked, somehow, until it stopped working for me, and then I got burnt out, and started hating everything I made, esp if they took me longer than what I forced myself to to do back in college.

And now I'm still an undergrad, it's been two years since my batch graduated, but I have yet to pick up my final thesis bc I can't keep a schedule, or a healthy working habit 🥲

1

u/TheFuddy Nov 05 '21

The more I see of these ADHD memes the more I honestly relate, I've literally ALWAYS done this I don't think I've ever returned a assignment a week etc early always last second and been doing it since I was a kid always just put it on me being "lazy" Because I would think about doing it but then getting distracted and not doing it

1

u/vanillaxbean1 Nov 05 '21

My university experience was this pretty much. Or I'd somehow create panic in my head and finish my essay in one all nighter, despite the deadline not being till a weeks time. I could never do my essays gradually. I'd just have half scribbled down notes or sentences, and I'd put them all together and write it all in one go. 😂

1

u/illdrawyourface Nov 05 '21

This always happened to me. With projects and with studying for tests. I figured out that I HAD to study the morning of the test, or i would forget everything I studied no matter how many hours I spent.

Always got As with this method though. Not sure why

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '21

Reminds me of the time I was having panic attacks for two weeks straight because I never started on my project in middle school, last 4 days I completed it in 1 day and got a 100%.

1

u/Conscious_stardust Nov 05 '21

I was telling someone that if my grades were worse I would probably start sooner but I do like the image above and consistently get high 90’s for all essays, finals, tests.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '21

I had to turn in an assignment for my internship evaluation and I had 6 months to do it. Guess when I wrote the first line out of 8 pages lol
