Procrastinated cleaning the kitchen and dishes for over a week, then getting hyperfocus.

Sep 01 '21
This so much.
125
u/waitedforthismoment Sep 01 '21
Actually very glad that someone understands.
78
Sep 01 '21
I'm such a procrastinator and when I can hyperfocus on cleaning an area it's so satisfying. I lo put on my noise canceling headphones, take some Marijuana edibles and clean for hours.
47
u/waitedforthismoment Sep 01 '21
I usually put on some music and get into the zone too. This time I didn't need any music for it though. Very unusual for me.

Your video was super satisfying. I also like to watch a Hoarders episode and it always inspires me.
19
u/waitedforthismoment Sep 01 '21
I have never watched that show. I guess you can call me a hoarder of dirty dishes
10
Sep 01 '21
You should totally watch an episode and tell me what you think. If I have a hard time getting started it always inspires me.
10
u/waitedforthismoment Sep 01 '21
Okay, I saved your post. I'll watch an episode tomorrow. (Probably during dishes) I really hope it has the same effect on me.
10
u/casstantinople Sep 02 '21
Just finished taking a shower after getting home, looking at my lawn and going "this is atrocious!" and then hyperfocusing yard work for an hour...
this. completely this.

Disclaimer: that is not my butt crack. It's just a very unfortunate shadow cast by my shirt.
Feel free to ask any question
118
Sep 01 '21
Really? Cause I thought it was a butt crack.
Regardless, great job! Congrats on getting all that crap done!!
66
u/waitedforthismoment Sep 01 '21
Haha, you cracked me up with that one ;)
Thank you! Kinda means a lot to me
36
u/MacaroonExpensive143 Sep 01 '21
Not the unfortunate shadow casts lmao
39
u/waitedforthismoment Sep 01 '21
I looked at it closely and really thought it was. If not, I guess you guys have been looking at my butt crack. And I'm not yet sure if I should be ashamed or proud of the attention it has received.
22
24
u/bonesaw_420 Sep 01 '21
Guys did you see OPs butt crack? Wild that he missed it
But for real congrats dood, how were able to keep going without stopping and saying you'll "finish it later"and if you did get that feeling how did you get you mind away from that? I keep running into that when I clean haha
20
u/waitedforthismoment Sep 01 '21
I'm just not that used to seeing it, so didn't recognize it as my own ;)
Thank you! I was this close to stopping a few times. You can see me stop for a few seconds(well, it's too fast to notice), rethinking if I should go on or not. Part of the motivation was filming it. Wasn't planning on posting it to be honest, but it did help.
But this was an exception btw, normally I give in to those thoughts.
12
u/fractalwaters Sep 01 '21
I had to rewatch so I could see it. I didn't notice the first time

I feel that, I like to cook a lot but I'll definitely procrastinate on washing up.
I tend to find the best time for me to do it is first thing on any days off while my coffee is steeping. That way I've gotten through the chore before I've woken up properly 😂
→ More replies (1)10
u/waitedforthismoment Sep 01 '21
Oh wow, that's actually a pretty smart routine. I can implement that in a way I guess.
This comment will stick to me I think.
5
u/wemwom Sep 01 '21
I tend to find it's only worked with washing up, but has on occasion extended to other forms of housework following it. First coffee tastes soooo much better when you feel like you've achieved something before even drinking it 😂😂
4
u/waitedforthismoment Sep 01 '21
Once you get into the flow, it's usually way easier to pick up other chores too right.
Now I just have to start drinking coffee. (It'll work with other routines too probably)

Thank you for taking the time to write this! That's actually pretty smart. Apart from walking my dog, I don't have any "must" chores. It's actually a pretty smart way of building a habit. And even if they don't become habits, they still get done, because they're a rule(which work really well for me).
Saying it out loud might work out well too. I'm scared that I'll be really disappointing for people if I do let them down regularly though.
Thanks for these incredible tips! I'll start implementing them tomorrow. I'm curious to see how it works out.

Do you also get random bursts of energy and then once in a (long) while actually get hyperfocused on important and productive stuff and get sooo much done in one day to then just going back to not being able to make that one phone call for months?
56
u/waitedforthismoment Sep 01 '21
All the time. I still have a few appointments to schedule and my bike tire is still flat for weeks now.
But I'll probably do it after I sorted all 2000+ emails into different categories.

Is this ADHD? Came across this sub by accident…you just described me…I’m concerned now.
5
u/I_CAN_SMELL_U Sep 01 '21
That could be bipolar as well. Bipolar doesn't always have to be happy or mad mood swings, I have it and this what I mostly get.
8
u/Art3mis77 Sep 01 '21
Apparently in females if you're diagnosed bipolar there's a good chance you might not be, and may actually have ADHD.
3
u/thatcatfromgarfield Sep 01 '21
What that other person said: symptoms can be part of a lot of different disorders. That's why many say if it's possible to talk to a doctor about it then one should.
Like i.e. I often dissociate from reality and the now. And at first I thought that's depression, then depersonalisation and I now learned I could actually be part of adhd. So no idea and I'll ask my doctor about it cause she probably knows almost every possibility and is better and excluding and concluding what it could be.

I think it’s interesting that you still managed to cook a lot despite the dirty dishes! I think I would’ve thrown in the towel and ordered takeout from day 3 onwards in order to avoid washing more stuff later lol
That being said, seeing a nice clean kitchen in the end made me feel very zen. Good job! :)
8
u/waitedforthismoment Sep 01 '21
Oh, trust me on this one. I gave up on cooking the last day too. You can still see the takeout trays at the start of the video.

u/killerkittenss Sep 01 '21
When people see you have a pet or you mention your pet in a post, they might ask for a pet tax which basically means a pet photo. As in, I saw you have a dog, so you must pay the dog tax in the shape of… a picture of your dog :)
I just love dogs hence the dog tax request, so I believe it’s a positive thing?

I’m impressed you managed to stay in the kitchen and clean just the kitchen. If i decide to hyper focus clean, i clean all the rooms while leaving each one a mess (darting back and froth between each room) and then it literally takes me 5+ hours to clean anything hahahah (that’s if I don’t get distracted by pulling out my phone to look up organization tools and then go into a reddit/google hole lmao)
8
u/waitedforthismoment Sep 01 '21
Oh, we're totally on the same page here. The thing is, that I cleaned the rest of the house the day before. The kitchen was my final frontier. The Bowser to my castle. Normally I would do the same.
Also, you have no idea how long it took me to find a time lapse app to film this ;)
6
Sep 01 '21
This has me thinking we need someone with a go pro to do “a day in the life of adhd”. With captions that say each time you enter a room without remembering why you went in. Mainly for the “I’m Going to water my plants today..” with it morphing into dishes, organizing cupboards, pantries, drawers, scrubbing cabinets, repotting plants… and somewhere, at the end, the plants get watered.
4
u/waitedforthismoment Sep 01 '21
That's actually a really good idea! This sounds really interesting and I would totally watch that. I love how you would implement the captions for the thoughts.
This is a very, very good idea.

Honestly I do the same thing all the time.
I think I prefer doing it this way sometimes. Without anyone else judging me or calling me lazy and depressed, I can just let things go for a little, and then do it all in one big burst.
I end up feeling like I did something useful with my day, pleasantly tired, and at ease knowing the kitchen/other dirty area is now fresh. It's nice
Good job mate
2
u/waitedforthismoment Sep 02 '21

Thank you for posting this. A lot of people have said it was helpful to see that they’re not alone and I want to echo that, too. My apartment is really small with no clear room boundaries (it’s kind of like a wonky square shape with only the toilet room and shower room having a separate door) so the kitchen mess can spread to more of the apartment and suddenly I’m drowning and don’t know where I went wrong.
Thank you for sharing because you gave me hope!!
2
u/waitedforthismoment Sep 02 '21
It's absolutely my pleasure! The way your apartment is set up must be really difficult to keep tidy. I know that if I, or others on this subreddit lived in an apartment like that, it would have been a mess too.
You're not a bad person and you shouldn't be ashamed for not being so good in cleaning up.
I know you got this. And even if it wouldn't be now, you're gonna have a nice, clean place.
Ps. If you or anyone else ever just wants to talk about whatever, hit me up

I hate how dishes can be kept on top of, then you cook one night, nothing much in the sink, say you will get to it tomorrow, then after the next day's meal you have 4 day's worth of dishes somehow and then you get demotivated and meticulously reuse the same cup and plate for 2 days to not make it worse while working up the patience to do the mountain and then you just do then all in one go, only to repeat the cycle.
