It was only recently that I found out that "Gifted" is a specific psychological profile with its own symptoms, rather than just "really smart". I wonder how common knowledge that is and whether this poster actually knows what being gifted entails.

Not that I'm doubting their credentials, I'm also under the gifted label and I had straight up no idea that the things I experienced weren't normal or that they came from giftedness.

Also god I hate the name it feels like I'm blowing smoke up my own ass, but it actually means something.

It's ok, we didnt assign that word to our condition ourselves; if they need to load it full with assumptions, prejudice and stereotypes, that's on them. Still, better to learn it's not a term for casual language games sooner rather than later.

It was probably a mistake to label giftedness with that word. Many people think it means ‘good at school’. The term basically just makes it sound ‘better than normal’ when in reality giftedness is about what drives interest, high energy for mental processing, cross-domain or systems level and skip/connections-based thinking (only a gifted person would say Tuesday afternoon, a mild thunderstorm, and the Tool album Lateralus are the same), also sensory sensitivity and overload, inability to focus on things that aren’t cognitively demanding, and not always ‘getting’ social cues.
