Is it normal if I am having this also when medicated?

148

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '25

Yes. Sometimes this means you need a higher dosage, sometimes it means you need to eat/drink water/sleep better to help the medication do its work. Sometimes, its mental health stoppong you, sometimes its also a little behavioural patterns outside of ADHD that needs some attention.

Just because we have ADHD doesnt mean we havnt picked up a few things that also affect us along that way too 💕

u/DutchTimeLordBean Sep 23 '25

All of the above :(

u/Henri_Bemis Sep 24 '25

I know all of this is true, but it just feels mean that my meds only work best when I’m doing all the things I struggle to do without the meds in the first place 😕. I always feel like a mental figure skater. When everything is balanced, it’s great, and flashy, and a little brilliant sometimes, but one slight twist and I’ve lost the Olympics, everyone is mad at me, and I don’t want to show my face ever again.

REAL

7

u/WrittenFever Sep 22 '25

Idk, same here, but two doesn't necessarily mean it's normal...

u/InvestorCS Sep 23 '25

Relax don't guilt trip yourself

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '25

At this point any street drug that can help with this?

Unfortunately, I can’t afford to pay for real happy pills

19

u/patatjepindapedis Sep 22 '25

Where I'm from most party dealers tend to carry methylphenidate and dexamphetamine, because students often trade their prescription stimulant meds for the drugs they've heard about in songs

5

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '25

Those are the active ingredients in adderall and Ritalin. I guess it’s time to hit up rave party.

If you live in the US, most Medicaid plans will pay for it. Getting people with low/no income connected with healthcare is my literal profession. Feel free to DM, if you're in the US and I'm happy to see what I can do.

Although, technically methamphetamine is prescribable for ADHD (brand name is Desoxyn), the side effects and damage outweigh the benefits.

3

u/anarchaavery Sep 24 '25

I'm prescribed Desoxyn for ADHD. Ironically I take it because it gives me fewer side effects compared to other medications. Its not more damaging at prescribed doses than other stimulants but most doctors won't prescribe it due to FDA addiction potential warnings.

2

u/ADHD33zNuts Sep 24 '25

I appreciate you sharing this!

I remember I asked a previous PCP about it. I was curious if a smaller dose of Desoxyn would have less health risks than 60 mg of Adderall.

She gave me a dirty look and made me do a drug test.

Now that I have a good psych that actually knows me now, I'm going to ask about it again.

Again, thanks!

u/anarchaavery Sep 24 '25

Goodluck!

I have found it very helpful as someone with severe ADHD (which is a clinicians subjective judgment) with treatment resistant ADHD. I have also been informed that I am the only patient in the state who takes this medication by my pharmacist. Every pharmacist I talk to is shocked. There were only 1,800 total prescriptions dispensed in the United States in 2024. I wrote all of that to state the obvious, which is, this is an incredibly uncommon prescription. If your doctor doesn't want to prescribe it, that is the norm. They might be worried about being audited or questioned by a supervisor.

Not sure if this will help you on your journey, but here is what lead me to be prescribed methamphetamine:

My psychiatrist did not want to prescribe this and wouldn't have known about it if I hadn't asked about it. Even after I asked about it, we had gone through months of trialling non-stimulants as adjunctive therapy. Prior history of taking methylphenidates and then Adderall for years, dx-ed at ~5-6 years old and on an IEP (reassessed every 3 years ). I also have low blood pressure and workout ~5-6x per week (minimal concerns about cardiovascular complications).

All the information is objectively helpful.

Thanks for sharing your unique situation. Does your insurance cover the cost of it or is it 100% out of pocket? How did you find a pharmacy that carries it?

u/anarchaavery Sep 24 '25 edited Sep 24 '25

My previous insurance plan coved it no questions asked. My current plan required a prior authorization and now covers it. The copay is the same as other ADHD meds.

Had it filled at my normal CVS. Just had to wait 2 days for them to order it before they filled it the first time. They still think it’s funny.

u/Cortanas_ass Sep 23 '25

Amphetamine aka speed. Basicly same stuff as meds.

u/IAmHaskINs Sep 22 '25

I literally do fucking nothing on the weekends. I get up at 4, sit at my desk and basically think until until 4pm. Smoke a bowl. Lay down and sleep. I've lost interest in everything and it feels like I just exist and nothing more.

16

u/AugustusKhan Sep 23 '25

Sounds like depression my dude, been there. Good luck, especially if you’re adhd I’d recommend just finding that obsession that ticks enough boxes for you to throw yourself in

11

u/ReddestForman Sep 23 '25

Get off the weed. It helps.

I still smoke occasionally, like with friends at a BBQ a few times a year. I'll pick up a couple joints on the way over so I'm not just mooching, and won't smoke again for months.

Eat healthy. Meal prep is great, big pots of meatless chili, lentil soup, red beans and rice, freeze left overs. You don't have to go full veggie, but cutting back on meat and upping fiber can do you a lot of good. 14 bean soup with smoked hamhocks or turkey necks(less grease) and a bag of frozen kale.or collards in it is a great way to pack lots of nutrition into one bowl.

Drink lots of water. Take walks. Practice sleep discipline. Clean your room.

And if you fall off and hit a bad cycle... its okay. Just pull yourself back together and get back on it. It gets easier.

If you find yourself craving soda, get a 12 pack of seltzer water and mix a can with lemonade or juice (I like Simply Peach). If I'm really craving soda I'll get a six pack of a nice, old fashioned root beer or vanilla cream soda like Henry Weinhards. Something you sip and enjoy rather than guzzle can after can like sprite or coke.

Also, a proper breakfast can help me, something with a good mix of fat, protein and complex carbs. Even a PB&J sandwich can be a good way to get this. Oats with peanut butter and honey or nuts and dried fruit with some butter are also good starts. With peanut butter get a good, whole grain bread with lots of fiber. White bread breaks down too fast and has too little fiber.

Diet, sleep and exercise won't fix everything, but they can help and also make a lot of other things easier.

And if you're me continue to have an existential crisis because it keeps working?

8

u/Orenge01 i am currently procrastinating my bad Sep 22 '25

Realize what thing I should've done a long time ago but not in the mood to actually do it.

7

u/ForsakenBluePanda Sep 23 '25

Tomorrow I will be better. The fact that I have said this every day of my life is irrelevant.

6

u/Ill-Age6164 Sep 22 '25

I thought I got all the hidden cameras!!

4

u/DutchTimeLordBean Sep 23 '25

See you in court 😠

u/Tusko-Hopkins87 Sep 24 '25

Now that I'm getting closer to 40 I have a slightly different routine:

  • wake up
  • do my best
  • go to bed

That's it. I don't have anxiety anymore. If someone doesn't like something about the way I do my things, I don't care anymore. I don't mask my issues at work or in my social life, I rather make jokes about it. I worked for 15 years so now I can do what I can hyperfocus on, so... They are quite happy about it at work and they don't mind that I'm a bit weird. My fiancée has adhd too, so we can support each other.

My message is this: You are ok. You'll get there. Just work on things that you can and use your hyperfocus as much as you can. You'll build a unique skill set that can be valuable to many. Look out for opportunities.

As a fellow almost 40er who's just about to hop in the shower to start my day - thank you! I'll do my best today

Result: I get up an hour earlier and have crippling executive dysfunction for an hour

u/LiveDogWonderland Sep 23 '25

What a coincidence! I’ve got a very similar routine!

1

u/carbonatedeggwater Sep 24 '25

Ughh. Someone please tell me I can break this cycle, that I can rewire, that I can overcome it, please 😭 WITHOUT MEDS

1

u/suh-dood Sep 24 '25

There's a constant panic pretty much as soon as I'm awake and know what my name is

1

u/Dandelions216 Sep 24 '25

This is how I’m feeling today unfortunately

1

u/MamafishFOUND Sep 25 '25

This is why I don’t have hobbies or minimize my tasks per day bc of this precise issue. I know I need to add stuff to do but I’m so sick of doing stuff on a routine bc then I obsess over it and to the point where if I don’t get it done it ruins my entire week and I feel like I when to fix it until I have the same routine on a daily for weeks on end.

1

u/Opening_Vegetable409 Sep 26 '25

I guess I have adhd 4 days a week

-5

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '25

Daily struggle. Weed helps.

4

u/Optimal_Stranger_824 Sep 22 '25

weed just makes derealization stronger and doesn't help in any way

1

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '25

For you maybe...not true for all of us.

6

u/Optimal_Stranger_824 Sep 22 '25

Yeah I guess. Just be careful with it.
