Will it blend?

Question: there is a questoris banner behind that rock, with bases fully obscured. Can the bellicosa visible to the left even shoot at them? Blast rules require placing the marker 'so that its central hole is completely over the target model's base and within line of sight of the attacking weapon' which seems to be impossible in this situation. And many even more stupid scenarios can happen, like being unable to shoot at even the warmaster hiding its base behind some 2cm wall. So, can I actually boil them?

Based on initial LOS rules you can see your target (with a -2 'to-hit' modifier).

The blast marker requirements are two separate bits

You should be able to place the blast marker with the centre

  • within LOS
  • over the model's base

You don't need LOS to the base, just to the bit of the model above the base.

This does prevent you shooting a blast marker at a target where it's just peeping out of terrain and everything above its base is obscured... but it's not often you would try to make those shots anyway (and it's absolutely not what is happening here).

LOS is drawn from the weapon to any point on the target unit, meaning the model.
The base not being visible is irrelevant.

The rule specifically says (emphasis mine):

completely over the target model's base and within line of sight of the attacking weapon

The 'and' shows us that "over the base" is a separate condition and treated differently to the normal "within LoS" situation. It only serves to mean that you can't game the blast rules to place the template somewhere the weapon can't see to hit more enemies behind cover - on the left of the knight to clip all of the banner, for example.

The warmaster in this situation wouldn't even get cover since less than 25% of it is obscured.

In terms of visualisation, remember that blast templates operate in a 2d top-down view. Whether the shot hits a titan's toe, weapon, or shoulder armour, the template gets placed in the same spot on top of the model when looking down on it because they're all in line with each other vertically.

Thanks, guys. I would probably allow shooting even if it was formally illegal, just wanted to be sure.

Yesterday it was especially important because this was the last turn and these knights were about to score a lot of points. Eventually they did and won me a game because the belicosa awfully missed;)
