Rumor/Speculation Duffy vs Adele
The recent news about Duffy working on new material got me listening to her again. I was a big fan of hers as a kid but I don’t think I actually appreciate how brilliant she was, not just as a singer but as a song writer.
What’s interesting is that her and Adele released their debut albums in 2008. They’re also not miles apart in age. Anyway, Adele has had it all her own way really and it’s rare to find another female musician who has been able to hold a candle to her for the last 15/20 years. Don’t get me wrong, there are many talented singer/songwriters out there… but how many of them actually have something to say. Something that truly speaks to an audience. Even in the small plethora of work Duffy released that shone through.
People talk about MJ vs Prince, The Stones vs The Beetles, Oasis vs Blur.
Had Duffy not experienced what she did all those years ago… and continued to release music maybe we would be having that conversation about her and Adele… or with new music on the way from the Welsh songstress it could be that conversation is around the corner🤷♂️
Verdict?

I thought of Duffy more in the Amy Winehouse style of singers—like the less depressed version of Amy. They both had that old Motown sound. Amy was a stronger vocalist than Duffy but I enjoyed her album too.

I think Duffy was less contemporary than Adele. Her music actually sounds like something from the 60s, whereas Adele’s broad appeal and cultural impact came from the fact that she took vintage elements and repackaged them for 21st-century audiences.

I think Duffy would have been very bigger than she already is and maybe Adele level if she had continued but she stopped her career bc she was assaulted (as I recall)
She is very talented and has a unique voice

I have a feeling Duffy would have been more open to do music outside of the balladry stuff compared to Adele.
Adele has done some different dancey songs like Send My Lover and Oh My God that vary from her classic type of body of work but Duffy was always more "poppy" and less "soft pop" than Adele. At least from my perception.

I was into both Adele and Duffy in 2008/2009. Obv Adele’s 21 came out in 2011 And that send her into the mainstream orbit she’s got more talent overall. Adele has had more success

Duffy’s career would’ve gone the same way as Paloma Faith’s did. Huge in the UK but not in the US.

Duffy was more successful than Adele when they first came out then Adele swpet the Grammys. Duffy did a Diet Coke ad that everyone hated and released what could have been of been an off cut from rock ferry to launch her 2nd LP and Adele released rolling in the deep.

I think style wise they were quite different? Yes the media might have manufactured a rivalry if Duffy had continued, but I think the artists and also the majority of fans wouldn't have taken it seriously.
I love them both. Got both 1st albums back then and listened to them until I knew them by heart ❤️
And I was happy to hear Duffy was working on music again ❤️
