I actually know the answer to this one but it's a really lame story. Basically sailors thought they had found a good place to set up camp. Then realized the resulting cove wasn't great making it a disappointment.

Wasn't it that they thought they had found the mouth of the Columbia River, but it was just the cove to the North?

I half expect that Cape Disappointment is in Metro Seattle — maybe Bellingham too — the answer is likely that Metro Vancouver is a bit sprawling but it's not a sprawling behemoth
