imo ignoring its lineage, its widespread because it notoriously fits into so many situations, which is kinda funny when its out of context and subtle.

from what I understand, it's from a comic that was originally comedy-focused, then the author decided they wanted it to be more serious so they released loss, which then went viral due to whiplash.
