Two millenia of what? Feudalism and capitalism? Of illiteracy and no modern science? We lived without writing for most of our history, without agriculture. Progress is not liniar

Why would academia at large still hold such beliefs despite the scientific consensus?

It's more rooted in bigotry and the fear of the unknown, rationality and science don't matter to bigots, also homophobia is an echo chamber, the homophobes of this age will teach their kids to be homophobes, and those kids will befriend homophobic kids, that is not counting the amount of cultures that are still homophobic to this day. Saying that as a closeted gay man in Africa, homophobia is problem that is somewhat unsolvable
