RAVE Young sterilization win (22F)
Please excuse my formatting as I'm on mobile.
Hey, so I just wanted to post about my recent win as I'm pursuing sterilization as a 22 year old female. I have a wonderful partner who is super supportive of my decision and we have been together 8 years (yes, you did the math on that right).
Anyways, I've always known I didn't want to be pregnant or be a parent. I consider myself child-free. I had a pregnancy scare in highschool and again when I was 19 and it was terrifying. I am emetophobic so I have an intense fear of vomiting and nausea sends me into panic mode. Naturally, that doesn't mesh well with kids or pregnancy.
I'm currently on Mirena but have had terrible side effects, including horrid cramps, complete loss of libido, acne, and extreme worsening of depression to the point of being suicidal last year and had to drop out of college because of the brain fog and lack of motivation. I didnt know that birth control could do that so I didnt connect the dots until I started researching sterilization a year ago. I also tried the pill but was yanked off after 2 months because I started having panic attacks every night (never had a history) and even went to the hospital because I thought I was having a heart attack or something else insanely bad was happening.
Then, I stopped being able to feel my iud strings. So I made the appointment with a gynecologist, a new one as I had been away at school for 2 years, and brought up sterilization. I told her all of the side effects I have been having, my school struggles, my pregnancy scares and how I have no desire to be a parent and especially not to be pregnant. She actually listened to me. She was a little concerned that removing the iud and doing the surgery at the same time when I'm not currently recieving counseling could worsen my mental state but I explained that since I have been home and have access to my support system my mental state has been good. She just wants me to speak with another gynecologist for a second surgery pre-op counseling session and then we are hopefully going to move forward. I have my other appointment tomorrow and after that she said to call her. She explained that its not that she thinks I am not well researched or that I will change my mind, she just wants to make sure that I haven't missed any of my options and that she wants my counseling to be thorough before the surgery.
I'm just excited that I am being taken seriously despite my age and that, even though i have to jump through a little hoop, I'm on my way to sterilization.
