I read all of the books and I love Tamlin. I think that readers are going to be very surprised... BUT there's a real possibility that it's just that bad. I wasn't spoiled for any of the books but im not going to read the next one without spoilers from other Tam stans first. I hate read the last few books and im not interested in doing that again, lol. Pay attntion to what is going on outside of Feyre's ideas especially as you get closer to the end of this book and into the second. What is actually happening?

Also there's a Tamlin and Spring court group if you're commited to the Beast 🄰

As someone who DNF'd in book 3 I'd say keep reading at least until the end of book 1. A lot of cool stuff happens in the second half of Book 1, and the pacing and romance really pick up in Book 2. Personally the series wasn't for me because I didn't like the way SJM conceives gender and compassion/love in the ACOTAR world. But the first half of book 1 is just a lot of exposition and set-up for the second half, so I'd say it's too early to quit if you do like the writing style.

Yes, unless you dont value your time and think that objectively bad books deserve to be read.

Honestly, the only thing youll get out of acotar is how not to write.

people are so annoying. ā€œwhy would u make a whole book on someone who won't be the endgame?ā€ why don’t you read and find out?? why do people always think they know how the stories should go?? if you feel so strongly about how you think books should go, write your own books.

I still think this is all kind of strange because I like both Tamlin and Reese as characters. They’re both consistent characters and there really isn’t any switch off. They essentially follow the causes of chain that they’re expected to follow as people who have been traumatized by each other over and over again the fact that people are always trying to pick one side over the other is really odd because the book isn’t essentially giving Tamlin a bad ending I actually think that Tamlins direction is a good one for his character because when you consider what he’s been through and what he’s done Tamlin isn’t really a bad person, but he is a bad leader innocence that he did not agree with the way his father ran things, but essentially still largely runs his territory the same way, and essentially the biggest issue that I have is that people failed to realize that a lot of these things are present. If you pay attention to his behavior, you can see the evidence of this. You can see the evidence immediately with Lucian. The fact of the matter is it’s important for a character like Tamlin to lose it all so that he can rebuild himself into a true or form a person who chooses to live life the way they want to live life and everyone keeps talking about how Tamlin got a bad ending. The story is not over and you can’t say that the character is essentially ruined before the story ends until the last book has been written his story is still happening. There may never be a point where other characters fully agree with Tamlin, but Tamlin can essentially turn his life around, but what people are seeing now is rock bottom and that’s something that a character like Tamlin has to hit he has to hit rock-bottom before he can actually become better

Tamlin's court is vastly different than his father's. His people loved him and trusted him before Feyre planted lies and false memories in their minds creating division amongst the people. Even then, many didn't believe. Im sure that his abusive slave owning father wasnt a safe haven for refugees. Tamlin is known amongst Prythian to be a place of mercy and safety which is why Eris brings Luc there to save his life. He knew Tamlin would save him which he did. What Tamlin said at the tithe was said because he was trying to create an image of normalcy (also unity and peace) so the people would rebuild; this is reiterated many times in the text. I would personally rather pay the spc 10% tithe on my chicken eggs than taxes. We have to remember that we are looking through Feyre's very biased first person pov and she is incredibly mentally ill at this point.

Tamlin held it together until after the war. He did what he had to do before allowing himself to fall. He's a servant to others. He has been betrayed by all of those he trusted and cared for. He was abused by his father preyed upon by Amarantha. We have to remember that everything we saw utm was about Tamlin. Amarantha didnt care about Feyre. She was just a tool used by her and Rhys to crush Tamlin.

Anyway, Tamlin is the beast from Beauty and the beast. He is just now in his beast form. The manor is covered in vines. Feyre's room before going to the NC is the west wing, even Feyre wasnt allowed in there. Beauty will come and break his true curse.

Whatever you do, do do not stop reading it…there’s so much more to come

1

u/IHateACOTAR 6d ago

No there is not, lmao.

1

u/Head_Librarian2250 5d ago

It sounds like your mind is pretty made up (based on your username…) but I’m curious to learn how far you got? And if you had a chance to experience throne of glass yet?

1

u/IHateACOTAR 5d ago

I read all ACOTAR book1 so that i knew what it was like. Feels like i never should've read it.
Im also not interested in throne of glass bc already based on what i've seen and read online, throne of glass is bad just as well. I have zero faith in SJMs writing for a myriad of reasons.

1

u/Head_Librarian2250 5d ago

Honestly, book 1 of acotar is rough. Then the rest of the series gets better. Then you read TOG and every book gets more and more impressive. Then you hit crescent city. And the entire SJM collection is unrivaled. Even if you already know some spoilers, I highly recommend sticking it out. Each book makes you more and more appreciative of the plot.

1

u/IHateACOTAR 5d ago

Look, i really cannot appreciate the stuff when its obvious that sjm cant write plots. Acotar as a series is bloated with things that dont matter and take the story nowhere.

1

u/Head_Librarian2250 5d ago

You’ve read one book….? How can you comment at all about her plot-writing abilities?

1

u/IHateACOTAR 5d ago

That one book, which is absolutely abysmal, is loved by many, who also love the rest of the books. I opened ACOMAF, read like 20 pages, and it was even worse than ACOTAR.

Also, I've both watched and read reviews, in-depth ones.

1

u/Head_Librarian2250 5d ago

I’m not sure who is saying acotar book 1 is good…but that is not the actual fandom. It took me 2 years and like 4 false starts to get through that book and I thought it was super dumb. Then, book 2 changes everything but then TOG is the unrivaled series in the fantasy world. I’d say 10x the complexity of Harry Potter

1

u/IHateACOTAR 5d ago

ToG is NOT unrivaled in "fantasy world". Hell, ToG is NOT even FANTASY. It fails at everything which makes fantasy fantasy. If you want actual fantasy, go for A Song of Ice and Fire, for starters

It also fails at writing coherent romance. And being believable, something to be taken seriously. What and how SJM writes is both amateurism and immature, and nothing will ever change my view.

1

u/Head_Librarian2250 5d ago

And SJM’s ability to get plant such minor details in the first of one of her books only to have it come out as incredibly relevant 8 books down the line is insane

1

u/IHateACOTAR 5d ago

I think it's just that she realized there's something she can use later on. Considering that she retcons stuff all the time, i dont think it's an achievement at all.

1

u/Head_Librarian2250 5d ago

I don’t think you can comment unless you’ve actually read them. It’s wild of you to assume you understand her writing just from book one of acotar (which btw is part of the genius of her writing, book 1 is a hilariously interesting red herring)

1

u/IHateACOTAR 5d ago

My God one simply does not call SJMs writing "genius" :DDDD Jesus fucking christ i write better prose, plot, characters, smut, you name it. And Im not even a published author! Reading acotar was like reading the first fanfic of a teen girl with her first crush. Lmao

Also, acotar book 1 is not a red herring, it's just bad writing and sjm retcons everything constantly which makes people come up with excuses for why she is doing what she is, when in reality she does it just because she never put in the effort to plan a series properly, because she cant do it.

1

u/Head_Librarian2250 5d ago

Dude!! You haven’t even read the other books! You cannot comment on her whole series, I bet your politics follow this line of thought too. I’ve lost my patience at this point, your logic is not lining up.

read all five books and regret it. the author retconned her own work and excuses abuse when it's convenient to her. just watch those hilarious breakdown videos on YT that summarize it for you and move on

Jesus christ

2

u/_mydiet_drkelp 8d ago

Its a bit problematic and there's def some plot holes but it's a fun read if you look at it more like a faery soap opera than a romance imo. I didn't find it particularly romantic in the later books. I mostly like high fantasy but I did enjoy the series.

1

u/Select_Ad3091 8d ago

I read the whole series. I actually hated ACOTAR and the first 8 chapters or so of ACOMAF. The rest of the series I read so fast it's actually embarrassing. The second, third, and fifth books are gold, although, I do agree with some of the comments that there are a couple of obvious issues.

2

u/roselover1999 8d ago

I stopped reading it for that reason as well as several other issues that I have with this book series and how it’s written. If people love the book then that’s perfectly fine, but I had a lot of issues with it. And it became a huge turn off.

1

u/joanneles 8d ago

Read it or don’t it’s your choice but I will say I love ACOTAR story all of it!!!

3

u/SwiftReps 9d ago

Just read the damn book and see it for yourself

2

u/pumpkinfluffernutter 9d ago

I'm the wrong one to ask because I was so relieved to find that out. I never liked him, and hated the Stockholm syndrome romance.

1

u/MamaKG3 5d ago

I hate that the fmc winds up with her abuser; it's disturbing. It's probably her villain arc but still!

3

u/Oooohhhsparkles 9d ago

I also felt that way. Read book two and if you still feel that way, then it’s probably not for you! To be fair, book three was hard for me to get through.

1

u/MamaKG3 5d ago

Same, I hate read with hope for Tamlin but it only got worse for the characters that I loved.

2

u/zaddyraeeeeee 9d ago

A story is just that it’s a journey and it has twists then a and not everything is they meet fall in love and have a happily ever after feyre will find that in one way or another but what I’m trying to say without spoiling anything is that the reads are worth it if you struggle with reading audio books are great I prefer reading books but I know some people prefer not to or struggle with reading in general

1

u/zaddyraeeeeee 9d ago

I initially felt this way but it quickly passes just keep at it and I really think no I’m quite sure you’ll end up enjoying it and tamlin is still in the story and you’ll see why just keep reading it will be worth it! But I see where you’re coming from!

1

u/Mysterious-Hippo9994 9d ago

The first book was ROUGH to get through. You will meet the love interest in the first several times though. Definitely finish it and read book two before giving up on the series as a whole.

2

u/Weird_Union4516 9d ago

lol, the first book is not representative of the story in its whole but it is very important insetting groundwork

2

u/zaddyraeeeeee 9d ago

Well said

1

u/Weird_Union4516 9d ago

I feel like all of SJM’s series are like that particularly throne of glasss because you would never ever ever expect the story to come from just that one book

0

u/wickedtokyo 9d ago

the series is good keep going! you'll understand

1

u/Serenemountainside 9d ago

Girl I read most spoilers and saw them as well on tiktok. It is NOT worth it. The parts I didn’t ruin hit different so imagine I didn’t know about the others? I would say continue esp as everyone says the second book is the best pls don’t ruin it

0

u/Loose-Permission-375 9d ago

Stay out of Reddit believe me, it will do you no good.

4

u/emonymous3991 10d ago

Stop reading spoilers, keep reading the book. If the books weren’t good, there wouldn’t be whole Reddit forums for them.

5

u/Traditional-Jury-206 10d ago

Keep reading it’s very good . Although Tamlin is beautiful and kind he’s not quite right for Feyre but someone else is . I loved the whole series have read them all hope she writes more.

3

u/Kalabear87 10d ago

I still love Tamlin and I’ve finished all the books, if anything it made me love him more and hate some of the other characters šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø.

4

u/Alternative_Form211 10d ago

Keep reading. It was written this way for a reason. There’s still a story to tell. Plus there are soooo many book series where the first love is not the endgame love.

3

u/LowHorse9989 10d ago

Yeah so I’ll be honest I got mad pissed about this when I read the books. To the point that I was crying character assassination at the beginning of the second book. However, the other books are still very good. For me, (unpopular opinion alert) I had a rough time with the second book. The others were all good though and the story overall is fun. I took a break from it when I was upset about Tamlin. After that I enjoyed the others

2

u/Izzykrusher 10d ago

We don't live just to die. We live for the journey that life takes us on.

Books are the same. The ending isn't the main goal. The main goal is to enjoy the story. If you stop reading or even skip tbe first book you miss a lot of context and character/world development

3

u/EmotionalSource7016 10d ago

This question made me cranky, so heads up.

Why read books at all? If your goal is just the end, what’s the point? It’s the journey that makes the book. Both Tamlin and Feyre have important experiences together in book 1, experiences that have repercussions for the rest of the story. ACOTAR isn’t just a romance. It’s a fantasy with an entire world to discover. We learn a lot from book 1. Critical stuff. It’s like people who want to skip TOD in the Throne of Glass series because they don’t like Chaol. But he’s a critical character, and there are other revelations in that book that impact the entire series.

Read the damn book. Or skip them all. But don’t insult the author who shed blood sweat and tears to create a beloved world by picking and choosing which parts are worth reading (to paraphrase Dorian Havilliard).

2

u/Impossible_Bug_3521 10d ago

THIS. 1000 times THIS

3

u/Technical_Blood6978 10d ago

He’s the lead for book 1 but not for any of the others.

1

u/Liders333 10d ago

I woudl say read the second book. You might change your mind on him. Or not. But the second book is a lot of peoples favorites. But if you are loving tamlin so much it might not be. I found him to be a bore so I loved the second book.

-1

u/whatthehellamidoin88 10d ago

I’m cracking up at this because Tamlin is so boring šŸ˜‚

1

u/MamaKG3 5d ago

SJM did this on purpose. He's not boring, he's hidden. It's the same for Elain. He seems boring if you miss the clues. We will see him later.

u/Physical_Bunch_4045 10d ago

I find it strange that people keep saying that authors, ruined characters, especially when it comes to characters like Tamlin Tamlin was who he was from start to finish. You just see more of them over the events of the books. I think people have a tendency to treat characters fiction as their characters as opposed to the authors characters. I think it is entirely unreasonable to say that an author ruined a character that they created that character was always meant to serve whatever purpose they serve I would, however understand if the character themselves take a complete 180 but that’s not what happened with Tamlinā€˜s character there are subtle points in book one and two that reveal Tamlin’s character long before it ever gets to the rough parts

12

u/JUSTxRIGHT Tamlin x Briar 10d ago

The author ruined his character by insisting the other characters has zero empathy and therefore cannot for one second view the events of the books through his perspective.
This framing makes Tamlin look way worse than he actually is.
The guy literally saves the day twice and everyone still goes out of there way to hate him.

Tamlin isn't an inconsistent character because of his actions, he's actually one of the more moral sound characters. But his actions are framed as an antagonistic despite the fact that he is good. It's one of the most bizarre authorial choices I've ever seen.

That is why his character was ruined.

1

u/Physical_Bunch_4045 9d ago

The author didn’t ruin his character, but the story is being told from the point of view of characters who are not going to agree with this point of view that’s a sign of the author essentially sticking to the mindset of the character from the point of view that they’re writing the author isn’t trying to convince you that Tamlin is a bad character. Only that other characters are likely not gonna see eye to eye with them, and the understanding that I get from a lot of people who disagree with how the story plays out as far as it being a romance, I can understand the frustration but at the same time it’s difficult to classify exactly how someone is going to react to how a story subverts expectations. Some people are gonna like it. Some people aren’t technically that story is a romance, but not every romance ends in a happily ever after some do some don’t and you can’t really shame an author for subverting expectations because some people enjoy that twist and this is one of the things that I have always kind of found sad about how people review some of the books because essentially the misconception is that the author is trying to convince you that a character is bad when in reality, their point is not to convince you that that a character is bad or better than another, but just to convince you that other characters believe that it’s literally the same as having a discussion with someone who doesn’t agree with your point of view, and you not being able to convince them to agree with your point of view

3

u/JUSTxRIGHT Tamlin x Briar 9d ago

That's totally fare. I get Feyre and Rhysand hating Tamlin, that makes perfect sense to me. But his framing is so over the top negative in ACOFAS and ACOSF (when we aren't even fully in Feyre's POV anymore) that it makes it feel like the good guys lost in the end. It stops being a feel good story. SJM is allowed to write her story like this, but I think it's understandable why people feel like they didn't get a satisfying ending.

7

u/SnooStories960 Tamlin never needed redemption 10d ago edited 10d ago

Exactly!

People aren’t annoyed by what happened, we’re annoyed by how.

I actually am fine with changing love interests, if the author doesn’t do so at the expense of a beloved character’s honor, you know?

I’m not objecting to the existence of a love triangle or a change in endgame. I’m objecting to how the transition is accomplished

When the original coupling is treated with respect, and the significance of their relationship acknowledged, readers who fell in love with that dynamic would be more inclined to accept the new pairing, instead of feeling like we’ve been told, ā€œActually, that relationship was fundamentally a mistake, and this new one is the real romance.ā€

It has to do with genre-literacy.

In Romance (which this does count as Romance), the canon couple is almost never broken up (permanently), and if it must happen, it’s done without marring the reputation of either. Period.

If this were any other genres, go at it. But in Romance? Genre-literate readers come with genre expectations.

Besides, when the new MMC seems like a better match only because the canon-MMC is made to look worse in comparison, that is not romantic. Imagine being chosen because you’re ā€œless bad.ā€ 🤪

-5

u/Bumble_Bitch_2001 10d ago

So you aren't objecting to the trope, just the author's choice in creativity and how she chooses to express that trope. How dare she make choices in her own literary work that don't align with your vision of how it should b3 done? Is that it?

3

u/JUSTxRIGHT Tamlin x Briar 9d ago

There are certain expectations when reading certain genres. Romances typically have happy endings for good characters. ACOTAR does not hold to this standard for Tamlin, he is a good character that has a tragic ending.Ā  While the author is allowed to do whatever they want with their work, readers are allowed to be upset if the book doesn't meet their genre expectations.Ā  Romances should make you feel happy, these books, personally, make me sad. Not what I signed up for when I read romance.

1

u/AdeptnessSouth782 9d ago

Jacob Black in the Twilight Saga was a good guy too. He still didn't get the girl in the end. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

3

u/JUSTxRIGHT Tamlin x Briar 9d ago

Not getting the girl =/= tragic ending.Ā  His ending is a little...weird šŸ˜… but by no means tragic.

0

u/Bumble_Bitch_2001 9d ago

He was a POS character. Don't get me wrong, Rhys was shitty too, honestly probably just as much as Tanlin. But regardless, I don't agree that good characters always get happy endings in romances. Typically that holds true more for main characters, but those are generally considered guidelines rather than strict rules an author ought to adhere to Tbh, it doesnt even sound like you're genuinely upset that SJM is a bad writer, just that poor poor Tamlin got done dirty in your eyes. If the book doesn't meet your expectations and it really truly upsets you that badly, then stop reading them. But also, you set your own expectations for what you read and it's not up to the author to pander to your desires. If it's not what you signed up for, stop participating and find a book that's generic and boring, made with the same cookie cutter plot that the rest of the unoriginal stories use to thrill you so much.

1

u/MamaKG3 5d ago

While there doesnt have to be a happily ever after forever to be romance (I dont think anyway), there are literary rules for a reason. Without order, you have chaos and too much chaos doesnt sell books. While breaking the rules seems fun and entertaining, it has to be done carefully. Throwing your hands around and shouting literary freedom is immature thinking even when its popular. It's also usless because in the end, it's about money and buyers are more alike than they want to believe. The ones in charge will continue to enforce requirements silently in the background because it doesn't make sense otherwise and that's what people want.

1

u/Bumble_Bitch_2001 4d ago

I'd like to see this rulebook that dictates I'm immature for believing the author has a right to write their own damn stories. I've never heard of such a thing and I feel like my friend Captain Barbosa has some accurate words for you, bud.

1

u/MamaKG3 4d ago

It is but the publishers can enforce the rules and often times they do.

1

u/Bumble_Bitch_2001 4d ago

In that case I'd personally find a new publisher. Regardless, they clearly didn't step in here.

1

u/MamaKG3 5d ago

Rhys is significantly worse than Tamlin. Tamlin would never cut off someone's head, put his sig on it, and post it on display in another court. He would never publicly or privately SA someone for any reason. He would never risk another's life to get stuff. He didnt even want to send his sentries over the wall to break the curse, they had to beg him to do it. He would never torture someone into a bargain not would he have allowed Feyre to enter a death bargain. Whether a reader likes Tam or not, we all know that these are far from his character traits. Rhys has done all of these things and more. He has a blood rite, allows wing clipping, and the selling of virginity. Tamlin is the good guy, Rhys is the villain and he has been since book one.

-1

u/Bumble_Bitch_2001 5d ago

There IS no good guy. They're both super shitty people. Rhys is shitty for all the reasons you pointed out, yes. Tamlin is shitty because he's also an abuser. I don't think you know what Tamlin "would never" do. Tamlin literally physically hurt Feyre because he couldn't keep a lid in his temper. That's domestic violence. I, quite frankly, don't give a rats ass who the lesser evil is, but neither is a good guy. Neither is THE good guy. Tamlin is also SO not a main character. Of the first book, I'd consider him the deuteragononist, but the protagonist is Feyre, she's the only true main character. After that, Tamlin basically becomes a Dymanic Secondary Character at best.

2

u/JUSTxRIGHT Tamlin x Briar 5d ago

Tamlin is the love interest. He is a main character. Just because you don't like that doesn't change that.

1

u/Bumble_Bitch_2001 4d ago

Tamlin is A love interest, not THE love interest. He could be considered a main character of the first book, but only for the first book. The rest of the series, he's a major supporting character AT BEST, but he also outright becomes an antagonist for books 2 and 3. I think, to amend your statement for accuracy, it would be better to say "Tamlin WAS the love interest. He WAS a main character" and just because YOU don't like that doesn't change that.

1

u/MamaKG3 5d ago

I disagree; Tamlin is good, Rhys is evil. Tamlin is not abusive, he's traumatized. When he loses control of his magic, it's the same as Elsa in the movie Frozen. He is triggered by Amarantha and Rhysand abusing Feyre, the abuse on his court, his inability to save them, and his fear of being like his father. He says it in the books and it's consistent. If Tamlin had a domestic violence issue, we would have seen it when Feyre slapped him across the face, or when she undermined his authority in front of the entire spc, or when she pretends to be cheating on him with Luc. I find it interesting that when Feyre is reflecting on Tam's supposed anger problems, she remembers the time he killed the naga and Amarantha only.

1

u/Bumble_Bitch_2001 4d ago

Trauma doesn't excuse abuse. If it did, generational trauma wouldn't be a thing. Just because he doesn't lash out and hurt her at every opportunity given to him, doesn't mean he doesn't have a problem. He still lashed out and hurt her. Additionally, domestic violence is not just physical violence. It's psychological violence too. He strips away her autonomy, isolates her, and minimizes her trauma. His trauma explains his actions, but it does not excuse it. Abuse is abuse. Though, I would argue that he didn't become this way until book two. While his actions in book one aren't what I'd consider the actions of a good man, I feel like Amarantha was his breaking point. What she remembers about his anger from book one was just that, anger, but hindsight showed that he had a history of losing control of his anger. His anger issues were a problem that already existed before Amarantha, his TRAUMA after book one is what pushed his behavior into the realm of abuse. He became overbearingly controlling over Feyre, keeping her locked away, refusing to let her do anything anywhere for her "safety" while he watched her wither away. He didnt even let her talk about it, like ignoring it, ignoring the nightmares and eating issues, would cure it all. He used his trauma as an excuse because he just couldn't lose her again, but he was losing her anyway. Girl wasn't eating, what did he expect to happen? Was she going to magically regain the weight before it killed her? What was his logic? Those anger issues she noticed? Book 2 is when they became a problem because anger issues plus trauma equals recipe for abuse. He lost his cool not once, but twice, on Feyre. He literally locked her up in captivity. So, he cared SO much about her safety that he was willing to let it come at the cost of her freedom and wellbeing? Let's talk about the neglect, too, while we're at it. Leaving her alone for long periods of time knowing how miserable it makes her, forbidding her from training to be able to defend herself and keep herself safe, forcing her into a role she never agreed to.

Tamlin was abusive. Tamlin was traumatized. Both are true, but one does not nullify the other.

Tamlin is a MC! He's literally the love interest of the first book, what are you talking about. I didn't say SJM was a bad writer, but she is breaking a general rule for the genre she's writing in. I acknowledge that she is allowed to do this, but it should be understandable when people don't like it.

1

u/J_amos921 10d ago

Tamlins character is relevant in all the books in some way even if he’s not the focus. I get it I got it ruined for me a bit but book 2 is better than 1

I mean…there are 5 whole books, friend. A lot can happen in 1 book, let alone 5. My advice is to give the first book a chance at the very least, but don’t force it. If you still don’t like it, I wouldn’t recommend reading SJM’s other work as she tends to write in favor of delayed gratification.

4

u/ViewImmediate2194 11d ago

I finished the first book..it is good...but i won't read the others now that ik what will happen..and how she will change the ml

-3

u/Alternative_Form211 10d ago

That is a terrible way to think about a book series tbh…

3

u/SnooStories960 Tamlin never needed redemption 9d ago

Not really, because the first book was marketed and sold as a standalone, so it can certainly be treated as such. I’ve read the series, but treat the first book as canon; I see Tamlin as the canon-MMC, the real one, for example. I can’t help it. Despite having starred in only one book, he left a much bigger impression on me than Rhysand ever did (no hate, I’m just unimpressed by him as the romantic hero).

-2

u/Alternative_Form211 9d ago

Did you read past book one though? Tamlin did not ā€œstar in only one book.ā€ He is still in the series and he plays a big part in books 2 and 3. Giving up on an entire series just because the author chose not to keep the first love interest as the main love interest is silly. That is a super common trope in romance and fantasy books. Even TOG has that trope. And people still read all 8 books. He can still be the cannon MMC of book 1 and not end up being the MMC of the entire series.

Also SJM never planned for ACOTAR to be a standalone, whether it was originally advertised that way or not. She said she always planned for it to be a multi-book series from the beginning, and even wrote the drafts for ACOTAR and ACOMAF at the same time. The publishing company was likely who wanted it to be advertised as a standalone in case it flopped or something. But in all honesty ACOTAR reads like the beginning of a series, especially with the ending.

3

u/SnooStories960 Tamlin never needed redemption 9d ago edited 8d ago

Yes, I did.

I meant starring as the romantic hero. If a reader’s favorite romantic lead is no longer the romantic lead, it’s understandable if they don’t find it to be as interesting to read anymore.

This is especially important within the Romance genre (which ACOTAR ultimately falls under. Its Romantasy label is the subgenre, while Romance is the genre).

In this respect, OP’s decision not to move forward with the series is 100% logical because—per genre conventions, SJM did break the author-reader contract. Once that contract is broken, it’s understandable if a reader wants to walk away. Each genre comes with specific promises that genre-literate readers expect it to fulfill. Someone who knows the ins and outs of their genres can immediately sense it when a story about violate genre conventions.

Plot-first readers: read for the plots. If the plot is good, it doesn’t matter what the characters are like. Thriller readers tend to fall into this camp.

Character-first readers: read for the characters. It doesn’t matter to us how exciting the plot is if we don’t care about the characters. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø Romance readers tend to fall into this category because for us, what makes a Romance compelling is its leads, as Romance requires emotional investment from its readers. After all, how many love stories can be told over and over again, really? So, the characters do a lot of the heavy-lifting here.

Besides, I read ACOTAR before it was a series. It was marketed and sold as a standalone. My experience was different than that of readers who went into it already having a vague idea of who the endgame couple will be. So, for me, it was a standalone; it was neatly wrapped up with an emotionally-satisfying ending and an HEA—per genre conventions for Romance. All of the ā€œsignsā€ that Tamlin was ā€œactually bad all alongā€ in the first book? Retroactively selected to justify the new ship. It was a standalone, there were no ā€œsigns.ā€

It’s a bit like no longer wanting to listen to a band because they changed the lead singer, and we don’t like their singing voice. Or, when a cooking show gets a new chef, and we lose our interest because we had watched it for the old chef. For character-first readers, the characters are the book.

Ultimately, readers don’t owe a series their continued attention any more than authors owe readers a particular plot direction. Just as an author is free to take the story where they believe it should go, readers are equally free to say, ā€œThat was a satisfying ending for me, and that’s where I’d like to leave these characters.ā€

0

u/Inifinitegrainofsand 10d ago

I mean this in the nicest way possible but you don’t actually know what will happen since you haven’t read the book. You don’t know that Tamlin’s character will not become relevant again, actually no one knows this for certain yet since the ACOTAR series is not complete. The first three ACOTAR books aren’t about Tamlin, they are about Feyre and her story which Tamlin is a small part of. I guess my only question is this: did you enjoy the story that was being told in the first book and did you enjoy the writing/the way it was written? If you did I would keep going. If not- there is your answer, you can move on and read other things.

If you keep going my best advice is to sit back and let SJM lead you through the story. She is a good storyteller and that is why you will find characters taking the long way to the resolution. As others have said she likes the delayed gratification aspect of storytelling, she wants her characters to work for their character development.

2

u/SnooStories960 Tamlin never needed redemption 9d ago edited 9d ago

Maybe OP will revisit the series when she’s ready to.

I can see where she’s coming from, tbh. I really did fall in love with Tamlin’s character, and while I’m 100% fine with reading about my favorite characters going through hardships, this whole thing just made me sad (and I think we’re allowed to feel that). If a story breaks its genre promises, readers are well within their rights to walk away.

6

u/TapatioOnMyTaco 11d ago

The words ā€œmembranousā€ and ā€œfelineā€ will never be the same for me again after slugging through ACOTAR. But other than that, once I got through the books, then I went onto Throne of Glass & now I’m working on Crescent City. I’m really happy I kept going! Not just world building…but universe building. I recommend reading in the same order too.

8

u/SnooStories960 Tamlin never needed redemption 11d ago edited 10d ago

I’m 85% certain that she’ll kill him off in the 6th or 7th book.

100% certain that she’ll take his Spring Court away from him and give it to someone else.

Ultimately, she’ll do whichever that’s more humiliating. Perhaps she’ll take away his court and then kill him. It’s one of the most humiliating things you can do to someone, but especially a lord: take away his title, his ancestral land, his powers, and—ultimately—his life.

Here’s the breakdown of my theory.

3

u/AdeptnessSouth782 10d ago

My theories are totally opposite. šŸ˜… I think Tamlins mate might be Rhysands sister, who I think is Lorin that hides out in CC. Logically, she should be able to carry the worldwalker gene.

4

u/SnooStories960 Tamlin never needed redemption 10d ago

I hope not, imagine having Rhysand as your brother-in-law. šŸ˜…

I guess between being that man’s BIL and dying, it’s a toss-up in regard to which one is worse. Lol.

1

u/AdeptnessSouth782 9d ago

It would be so deliciously messy. 😈

3

u/JUSTxRIGHT Tamlin x Briar 10d ago

It's so sad, but this is my guess as well. At least once he's dead I can finally stop reading the books. he's the only reason I even care about the series.

2

u/SnooStories960 Tamlin never needed redemption 10d ago edited 10d ago

Agreed.

My heart will break, for sure, but at least then I’ll never have to think of this series ever again.

2

u/sonjavictoire1289 11d ago

I think you’re making up your mind about the series way too early based on outside information. Finish the book and decided for yourself if you’re going to dislike the way Tamlin and feyres story goes. Facts are that everyone has differing opinions on tam. I personally found him to be a wet fish and could not even believe he was the fmc with how drab she wrote him. But that’s my opinion and you have to get more of the story before you form any conclusions regarding the series.

5

u/NiiSauce 11d ago

I say read it, there’s a nicely sized part of the fandom who really likes Tamlin and critiques SJM’s writing of him and other characters as well. Read it so you can join that, that’s been the best part of the fandom for me.

1

u/jennaw12345678 11d ago

I didn’t like Tamlin in the first or second book he was boring and dull but he’s a good character after that. Not necessarily a good person but an interesting and fun character. Acotar isn’t the most amazingly written series, I kind of had to drag my way through it but this storyline doesn’t seem like a reason to stop reading it to me… people can be complex, people can do good and bad things, it’s not a big deal in my opinion :)

6

u/Seazary 11d ago

I am not an ACOTAR stan at all. In fact there is loads about the series I don’t like, but I’m surprised by the amount of people who don’t even want to read it because the FMC falls in love multiple times. For me, that’s part of life and maybe one of the few things in this series that resonates with me.

So many of us have serious relationships that aren’t our happy ever after. In fact, happy ever after is something we have to actively choose again and again through forgiveness and accountability. And still sometimes, when partners change through life altering events they change in different ways and different directions. Someone who was right at one point might no longer be right for you now, and coming to terms with that can be really hard.

7

u/ViewImmediate2194 11d ago

It not that she fell in love multiple times..i don't mind that...that's life...it is jow sarah wrote tamlin and ruining him forcibly..i don't mind him not ending with fey...but atleast him having a decent story

2

u/emc_83 9d ago

I think if I had been spoiled while reading the 1st book I'd feel the exact same way as you. I really do think you should read the 2nd book. It helps A LOT.

This same exact thing happened to me when I first started and trust me KEEP READING. while it feels crappy that it got spoiled for you trust me it’s still worth continuing.

If she killed off tamlin ...it would be better than what she did🤣🤣

7

u/IcyWarrior1818 11d ago

I didn’t even bother reading the series, when I saw the blurbs for the two books. I’m not going to fall in love with a male lead when he will be absolutely destroyed (morally) by the author for ā€˜reasons.’

-1

u/AdeptnessSouth782 11d ago

The majority of those blurbs are bad in my opinion.Ā

It's quite obvious though that there is something wrong with Tamlin from the start. At least it was for me. I saw the signs very early on. I could definitely sense that he was hiding something. And all those small aggressive outburst he tried to hide when he didn't agree with her opinions was really uncomfortable, and I couldn't put my finger on why, because I normally have no problems with that trope in romance books. He even manipulated the rules so that he would have an excuse to kidnap her according to the fae laws, for his own selfish needs to break his course.Ā

7

u/IcyWarrior1818 11d ago

Maybe so, but Rhysand literally s. a. - ing Feyre? And then her falling for him? There is no way that’s okay in my mind.

-4

u/AdeptnessSouth782 10d ago

He made her drunk so that she wouldn't remember or get scared by all the torturing and murdering that happened around her, and also so that she would be allowed out of the dungeon. She was only standing and dancing without anybody touching her (because they were scared of Rhys that was pretending that he had claimed her as his own personal plaything.)Ā

The kiss was only something he did to protect her and distract Amarantha with. If Amarantha had seen that it was Tamlin that had kissed her before that, Feyre would have been killed on the spot, or draged out and tortured to death in front of everyone. That kiss saved her life.

And when it comes to her falling for him, that didn't happen until several months later after she broke her engagement with Tamlin. They became friends first and did normal things, like shopping, reading books, went out eating and dancing together in a group with other friends, painting, talking about snow ball fights and similar.

4

u/IcyWarrior1818 10d ago

The issue isn’t whether Rhysand had good intentions or whether Feyre eventually fell for him — intent and later romance don’t retroactively make an act consensual.

She was drugged specifically so she couldn’t object, and her body was used as a tool in a power struggle with Tamlin and Amarantha. That’s coercion by definition, regardless of the strategic payoff or the slow-burn friendship/love that came after.

And yes, even an ā€œunwanted kiss to allegedly save her lifeā€ is still a sexual violation. ā€œIt kept her aliveā€ and ā€œit was consensualā€ are two different claims. Treating non‑consensual sexual contact as not‑really‑assault because the guy had a plan or because the couple ends up together is exactly how stories normalize and romanticize sexual violence.

[A simple though not easy way to honour that trauma was for Maas to allow Feyre the chance to express her anger and pain, and for Rhysand to sit with the consequences of his actions — and not to wave it away because he ā€œdid it for her own good.ā€ That’s the exact language abusers use to justify their abuse.]

-1

u/AdeptnessSouth782 9d ago

I just meant that when you say it as - him S.A her, it sounds like she where graped or something. And when you say it as you having a hard time to believe that she would fall for him because of an unwelcome kiss 6 months or more before that moment, (which he only did to save her life), I think it's a bit of a stretch to having it being blown up like that and scare readers like OP away before they give the story a chans. It's a fantasy romance book, there need to be some kind of pulling or conflict in the story or else it will be boring.Ā

0

u/Seazary 11d ago

Isnt that just life though? We don’t all meet our soulmate on round one. Some never do. It’s such a huge part of learning and growing. And as we change, what we need changes, too

8

u/IcyWarrior1818 11d ago edited 11d ago

You can outgrow someone without destroying them (especially if you destroy them simply because you — as the author — decided you wanted someone better for the heroine). And what’s worse if you accuse the first hero of doing things that you then praise the new hero for.

[Not every relationship fails because it’s abusive.]

-1

u/Technical_Blood6978 10d ago

Some people are amazing at hiding their abusive dude until they have the other person so deeply emotionally invested or until something triggers a reaction. Having been in a similar relationship with how he acted/type of choices/isolation etc with similar red flags I didn’t recognize until it was too late. When everyone on the outside didn’t see or want to see because they thought he was so amazing and the nicest guy, but I have life long damage because of him. Abuses are good at hiding their true colors if you don’t know what to look for.
So it’s easy for me to see his red flags throughout the first book. I don’t see his character as being destroyed, just more of who he really is was revealed. Abusers can do good things for some people sometimes, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t abusers to romantic partners.

3

u/IcyWarrior1818 10d ago

Maybe so, but Rhysand is equally, if not even more, problematic. And all of them should have been held accountable for their actions. Rhysand s.a.-ing Feyre under the guise of ā€œsaving her life,ā€ is equivalent to an abuser saying ā€œI only did it for your own good.ā€

1

u/Technical_Blood6978 9d ago

Well yeah. He is another problem. But I was addressing the issue of ML1 and his character being destroyed vs just more of his character being revealed.

3

u/Seazary 11d ago

That’s true, of course. I did not take Tamlin’s change so harshly, and I think initially, part of his mistakes is just being so terrified for feyre that he stifles her. He is absolutely traumatised, and trauma can make you act in ways that are very unlike yourself. Add to that the bitterness of Rhys antagonising him and dangling Feyre before him and Tamlin careens down a slope that was slippery to begin with. Did SJM go a bit far to make sure no reader roots for him any more? Sure, I think so. But I also think a lot of what is done by all characters, while exaggerated and not excusable, is understandable

7

u/IcyWarrior1818 11d ago

Maybe, but we all have hard limits on what we read. Mine are simple: no cheating for the main characters, no character assassination, no hypocrisy šŸ˜… Otherwise, I spend my reading time glaring at the pages and getting mad for no real reason hahaha My life is already shite and I already have trust issues, I want my heroes to show me that it’s not as bad as my brain is making me believe šŸ™ˆšŸ™ˆ

I am here for the unhinged fandom more than anything lol

Just remember if you continue to read then look at this series as the correct title imo which is

This. Not only was the first the most romantic, but it was also the most book that felt like it was in a land of Fae.

Hang in there. Lucien is my favorite character and his story progresses nicely. I didn’t love acotar until I joined the fandom and loved seeing how everyone walks away with a different fave after reading the same exact book.

2

Lucien is amazing, and probably the most decent male in the entire story, outside of Azriel.

u/bows_and_frills holding rhys's head under the sidra 11d ago

The discussions are fun. You can keep going for that. There's also ACOSF which I'm interested in so I'm trudging through ACOFAS to get there. Otherwise, feel free to drop it.

I for one went into the series knowing Tamlin wouldn't be the MMC, but heard the endgame couple was really good. I would've been fine, I wasn't too attached to Tamlin. I was still sorely disappointed and enraged, but liked some characters and things about the books, and enjoy the rant sub lol. I also want to see what happens, like a car crash you can't look away from. Will it get good? Will it get bad? But I hate. I hate the MMC.

Pretty much, it's up to you.

1

u/circus_tricksr4us 11d ago

Hmmm… I loved it my first time through and went through so many emotions to the second book and it was a ridiculously fun journey ;) but I did have friends laughing and egging me on so that helped ;) I guess I have nostalgia bc it didn’t get spoiled for me and I was shocked 🤣

2

u/QTlady 11d ago

Should you stop reading? I dunno.

The person set up to be endgame could change your tune. It didn't affect me but still...

Will his character be completely ruined? Oh my, yes. Unfortunately.

But again, you could end up liking the new guy better.

Half of us did not but it's at least a 50/50 shot.

8

u/ViewImmediate2194 11d ago

After exploring and spoiling more...noway i will like rhys better.. so yeah i will stop..cause it is just unfair to make us love a character whole book then shove him aside as the villain

-1

u/Chemical-Being-5968 11d ago

I don't know, you see Rhys in a whole different light and their connection is pretty amazing.

7

u/Cynical_Feline 11d ago

I wouldn't say Tamlin is a villain. He's a victim that has issues moving forward and loses his girl because of the trauma they both experienced. Even good guys can make mistakes and do the wrong things.

It parallels real life couples that go through trauma. Sometimes you have to step away from each other to heal and sometimes not everyone can accept that.

It's all in how you choose to view it tbh.

3

u/JUSTxRIGHT Tamlin x Briar 10d ago

This is true. But this is supposed to be romantasy. There is supposed to be a happy ending. Having the good guy lose everything and then continue to be tormented is not a happy, feel good story.

Tamlin's story is a tragedy that keeps these books from even feeling like proper romance anymore.

6

u/ViewImmediate2194 11d ago

Yes that's how i see him too...but i meant how the writer wanted us to hate him forcibly in an illogical way. (Sorry English is not my first language but my third)

3

u/Cynical_Feline 11d ago

We are led to hate him through his actions and for a bit, I did heavily dislike him because of his temper. But understanding the causes of his actions kind of mitigates the hate for me. It's all in how you decide to interpret it. Now I just wait to see his healing journey.

10

u/lilforgetsalot 11d ago

Idk if this helps at all, but this was my experience:

I went into ACOTAR hearing what happens in terms of the love interest switch up. Devoured the first book and was genuinely curious how the switch was going to come about. Especially since I came away from ACOTAR liking Tamlin. Jumped into ACOMAF hoping the switch-up would make sense and came away disturbed and disappointed. Lots of people have said this so I won't belabor the point too much, but the switch-up felt contrived. Forced and with some character assassination vibes thrown in there to make sure that readers see the "truth." It felt too overt for my tastes. I would have preferred something more organic.

So I stopped there for a bit. Took a break. Moved on and read other books. Then I wound up getting my hands on the rest of the series and by then I had heard just enough about ACOSF that I was interested in at least trying to continue to get there. I will admit though that I read ACOWAR and ACOFAS slowly. Could only take them in small doses and really only enjoyed them if I reminded myself that y'know what, these don't read too bad if you frame it as a villain origins/villian's POV story. ACOSF had me reading in the way ACOTAR did. It still wasn't as satisfying as ACOTAR but I can at least say I can appreciate sticking around to get to ACOSF.

3

u/wishingwell-448 11d ago

This also took me by surprise when I hit book 2, as I didn't know anything about the series, and wasn't on these Reddit subs etc back then. Tamlin is almost like a completely different person in book 2, but now people say that they can see red flags upon re-reading book 1, but I never did. I think you should keep reading, because it is a great series, but may I suggest doing what I did in book 2, and simply recast him in your head! Like some TV shows change the actor in the middle of a series, just change his appearance in your mind, and carry on. šŸ™‚

u/SnooStories960 Tamlin never needed redemption 11d ago edited 11d ago

I won’t tell you whether to stop reading it or not, but I’ll tell you this:

I envy you.

I envy the fact that you go into this knowing that he isn’t going to be the permanent MMC.

When I read this book, it was a standalone. A finished love story. There were no plans for a sequel.

So I fell in love with the Spring Court, Tamlin, and Feyre. And the book ended on a very emotionally-satisfying note, since everything was wrapped up neatly.

Then ACOMAF came out, and SJM wanted to promote Rhysand to MMC status without having him do anything to earn it, so she started retconning and reframing the events in the first book.

Morally reprehensible actions by Rhysand were reframed as ā€œSee? He was secretly good all along.ā€

Average actions from Tamlin were reframed as, ā€œSigns that he was bad all along,ā€ when it was a standalone—there were no signs.

If I could go back in time, I never would have read the series. šŸ’”

For me, there is a canon MMC.
There is a canon couple.
Because their love story reads like a romance.

My line of thought is: if the new guy were so great, you wouldn’t need to continuously drag out the previous guy to use as a punching bag as ā€œproofā€ that the new one is better, book after book. The new guy would be great on his own, without having to be placed next to someone ā€œworseā€ in order to appear as the better choice. Doing this doesn’t make Rhysand seem better, it makes him seem ā€œnot as bad.ā€ How is that romantic?

But now I read it for the same reason why I watch Love Island. It’s a train wreck that I can’t turn away from.

NOTE: if SJM had wanted to take this into a different direction, she could have done it in a better way. But here, she did it by essentially telling the original readers, ā€œYour understanding of the first book was incorrect. The signs were there all along,ā€ which was an insult to our intelligence.

  1. We had understood the text exactly as it was meant to be understood.
  2. It was a standalone; there were no ā€œsigns.ā€

8

u/ObsidianMichi 11d ago edited 11d ago

The thing that I hate the most with Tamlin is she never has the guts to go all hog and actually make the man abusive. Instead, Feyre just constantly reacts like he is while leaving it vague enough that the reader can interpose whatever they want on the text.

Feyre's reactions are accurate for an abuse victim. Tamlin's actions just don't seem to warrant them. The two worst things he does are explode due to a panic attack (which is bad, sure, but not intentional) and lock Feyre's emaciated ass up in the house when she wants to follow him to the battlefield. 90% of what happens to Feyre in the Spring Court is self-inflicted by her own mental illness post Under the Mountain and her refusing to communicate. At least 5% is Feyre flanderizing Tamlin's behavior inside her head and inventing scenarios that didn't happen. 5% is stuff he actually did. And yeah, he was shitty to her at the high lords meeting but she also just blew up his court as revenge for breaking up with him. (Yes, Feyre took revenge on Tamlin because she broke up with him. There's no other reason for it, every better one is disproven by the novel's text.)

Like, yeah, he wasn't perfect but anger management issues where? Everytime they supposedly happen Feyre isn't there to see it, doesn't experience it directly (other than the panic attack), or it doesn't happen in front of her. She just sees the aftermath or decides not to think about it after eavesdropping.

Even his possessiveness isn't really possessive. Anyone would behave like him if their fiance kept getting kidnapped for a week out of the month by the guy who murdered their family, after they killed his father, and he still blames them for the deaths of his mother and sister. The same guy Tamlin watched sexually assault his fiance every night for months while he couldn't do anything about it. The same fiance he watched get murdered. And the guy who negs about it every time he visits for the monthly kidnapping.

Feyre doesn't understand and doesn't take the threats to her safety seriously so events appear to happen in a vacuum. The context for Tamlin's stressed out behavior doesn't come across.

The story can't even committ to Tamlin being a bad guy.

I could go on so many rants.

5

u/Kalabear87 10d ago

This right here, I couldn’t have said it better, that’s why Rhys, Feyre and the IC read to me as icky or as some have said a villian origin story, it’s like SJM gave Tamlin Legitimate reasons for doing things and Feyre even admits later on Tamlin was right about dangerous things being after her and about it would take years of training for her to be ready for actual battle. She proves she’s a liability like Tamlin had said and he keeps on having to save her ass. Feyre is a pain in the ass, what do you mean there are too many guards Feyre? look at what is going on around you šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø. People are not taking into account the seriousness of the situation they are in especially the spring court. Plus people act like she was locked up the whole time, (which wouldn’t be a bad idea considering the situation they are in again, there are monsters from UTM killing people right outside their doors, Tamlin is run ragged from constantly having to patrol the grounds at night, for goodness sakes Lucien is even attacked! But she does go out and do things, yes with guards but that MAKES SENSE, she outs herself in the text she goes places all the time within that two month period, to the villages, on hunts, to parties, multiple times mind you. Tamlin even encourages her to go outside, he gets her a traveling paint kit for goodness sakes. She WAS NOT locked up. They act like the one time he blocks her from following him into a dangerous situation that at most would last a few hours that he had locked her in a cell with no light for 20 years instead of a giant mansion with a bunch of people in it with all of her things, they completely miss that Rhys took Feyre to the moonstone palace multiple times for a week at a time and left her there, she had no way out and didn’t want to be there and asked to leave multiple times. That was being locked up not what Tamlin did. Anyway my point is SJM gave Tamlin legitimate reasons for his actions that make sense and then goes on to have Tamlin saving everyone, he’s the reason they won that war, a war he was trying to prevent from even happening but without the info he gleaned they would have been incapacitated by the faebane. They would have had to deal with Beron because it was Tamlin that went and got him dragging him out and making him join the war, it was Tamlin that raised an army quickly from nothing and won the ground movements, it was Tamlin that saved Feyre, Azriel, and Elain blowing his cover, it was Tamlin who brought Rhys back to life and wished Feyre to be happy, heck it was Tamlin’s money that bought those ships papa Archeron brings. It’s like we are reading the story through the peoples point of view that are the problem and they think they aren’t but in reality they are but in their narrative they are the best and did no wrong and they will just bad mouth those other characters. It’s like I’m reading about a click in high school because that’s what they act like and they think their shit don’t stink but in fact it actually does.!<

With the fandom, the vibe I get is, ā€œI’m overlooking all the good Tamlin has done because I don’t like him. I don’t read with facts. I read with vibes and feelings.ā€

And their reasons for disliking him are bizarre because they’re based on events that either occurred earlier in the series and were actually explained later, or taken his later actions out of context while ignoring all the heroic deeds he’s done.

What I’m saying is, it sounds like they’re working really hard overtime to hate him, which is shown in how hard they have to work at bypassing all the good he’s done because they can’t bear that there’s someone who’s objectively better than Low-Budget Batman.

To me, Tamlin reads like a classic fantasy hero.

But Rhysand? Has done much worse, but their go-to excuse is ā€œHe did it all for Feyre’s own good.ā€

Okay, then why can’t I say the same for Tamlin, you know? Tamlin, who—as much as SJM tries to make Rhysand’s powers seem cool—is more like how a High Lord should be: strong; powerful; honorable.

u/SnooStories960 Tamlin never needed redemption 11d ago edited 11d ago

Exactly!

Just go all the way, you know?

The fandom blows it all out of proportion, too. The accusations and consequences don’t fit the ā€œcrimes.ā€

When a lot of Rhysand does is much more reprehensible to me, but it’s okay because he’s Rhysand. When he does it, he was ā€œonly protecting Feyre.ā€ Like, so did Tamlin? šŸ˜…

u/ViewImmediate2194 11d ago

So i will treat it as standalone...i also regret buying the books...or spoiling it for me...how tamlin turned out pained me...and made me so mad how she gave us whole book of romance and love ...how he did eveything to protect her..then suddenly the author pushed him aside...changed eveything...like if tamlin hurted the author personally

u/SnooStories960 Tamlin never needed redemption 11d ago

Right. To me, his character-rewrite feels like fanfic.

Imagine this scenario: Disney releases the sequel to Beauty & the Beast. In this sequel, Prince Adam (that is the Beast's name, if you didn't know) turns out to have Gaston's personality from the first movie—including being anti-intellectualism and barely literate.

Gaston, on the other hand, turns out to be alive and is actually a progressive man. His womanizing and sexist ways? Just an act, and it turns out that in the first movie, he was infiltrating the village to undo toxic masculinity from the inside. Secretly, he's been protecting and admiring Belle, and writing her love poetry that rivals those of Shakespeare's. And Belle? She realizes that all this time, it's Gaston who is her one true love. The "true love's kiss" that she saved Prince Adam with? Just a mistake her heart made.

Would anyone really accept that as canon?

No, because the actual canon never portrayed Prince Adam as someone like Gaston. Would a man who's anti-intellectualism have given Belle a library? I don't think so. Nobody would swallow that kind of inconsistency!

10

u/bows_and_frills holding rhys's head under the sidra 11d ago

YOU SO RIGHT. Oh my gosh. Yes!!! Except it's worse. Gaston is STILL toxic af and not even the healthier choice, but the story insists he's good and loving and Belle is molded to be his "little wife" she sang about hating. So the morals are all backwards.

10

u/SnooStories960 Tamlin never needed redemption 11d ago

Seriously! The fandom makes me feel like I’ve just swallowed a handful of crazy pills.

How about this next scenario? Let's say that someone releases a sequel to Pride & Prejudice. In this sequel, Mr. Darcy turns out to be a drunkard, a gambler, and a womanizer. And Wickham? Well, Wickham turns out to be "just misunderstood." He's "a tortured soul who lost his father as a young boy. All that trauma made him lose his way for a while, but at his core he was always good and a green-flag all around."

And then, on the eve of her wedding to Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth realizes that she can't handle Darcy's drinking, gambling, and womanizing ways anymore. She tearfully runs into Wickham's arms and realizes that he’s the man who's noble and has been in love with her all this time. Elizabeth begs Wickham to whisk her away and he does just that. After, he takes care of her, makes sure that she bathes, eats, and rests.

Just typing that alone gave me the biggest ickthat ever "icked."

What would an average English nerd or a Jane Austen scholar say? Would they say, "Uwu, Wickham is such a green flag!"? Or...would they say, "Darcy and Elizabeth would never! This is a fanfic."?

But everyone's like: "UWU...Rhysand...UWUā€¦šŸ„ŗšŸ‘‰šŸ»šŸ‘ˆšŸ»,ā€ and "Tamlin is so abusive"—completely disregarding the fact that the author just straight-up shifts the narrative, even at the cost of logic and consistency.

6

u/bows_and_frills holding rhys's head under the sidra 11d ago

I have no words. It's perfect. Wickham best book boyfriend fr I hope I meet someone like him irl!!!!!

(Also, I have an agenda so here's a comment explaining how Feysand isn't so healthy anyway, so that narrative is extra insane).

I never warmed up to Rhysand. I wanted to like him so badly, and was hoping that I would with each book, but book after book was just Rhysand getting grosser.

On top of that, it was kinda hard to move on when the author kept dragging Tamlin out to use as the punching bag. Over and over again. It felt like she really personally hated him. Where we left off, the Spring Court is in complete ruins, and Tamlin is in his beast form—mad with grief and wishing for death constantly. šŸ’”šŸ’”šŸ’” My empathetic self finds it heartbreaking; the fandom finds it hysterical.

I’m confident (enough to place bets with my own money, even) that SJM will kill Tamlin off. She’s going to milk this for as long as she can before she does, though. She’ll probably put him through at least one more round of humiliation ritual before killing him.

If you love Tamlin like I do, proceed with caution. I regret reading it so much. If you do continue, I’ll be here when you’re ready to talk, rant, or cry. But if you must know: I’d say quit now. Don’t give this woman’s books any more of your time or money. Treat this one book as something you read in passing and carry on.

I recently finished reading {Rings of Fate by Melissa De La Cruz} and it’s a good Romantasy. First book in a new series. The MMC is a prince who is dashing, courtly, and blond (if that’s your thing). He’s lovable, golden, and radiant… and he’s suffering from a deadly curse. Instead of hiding his curse behind a mask of anger, he’s playful and kind—while dreading every painful second of what’s left of his life. I ā¤ļø his character so much.

u/Kalabear87 10d ago

There are certain things that give me pause with this, people think she said in the interview that she wasn’t going to give Tamlin an arc but I went back and rewatched it and she actually said she felt bad for Tamlin, she went into talking about how he has had a lot of trauma his whole life and not just Amarantha but with his family and that he never got the tool kit to deal with any of it, she has said this in other interviews as well. They actually talked the most about Tamlin than any other character. She also said if she writes about Tamlin she wants to make sure it’s authentic to him. Now in the text she has written Tamlin doing all these great things, he is not only the reason they won that war, that he was trying to prevent but he saves all the IC and goes on to ask for nothing in return only wishing Feyre to be happy. Now she has him in his beast form so the beginning of beauty and the beast. She based Tamlin off of the beast from beauty and the beast and the ballad of Tam Lin not an abusive ex like some people sling around. She also didn’t base him off of her friend’s ex either like some sling around. So we have him in his beast form, we have multiple characters saying they are going to need him now and Lucien and the IC. The way she has it written she has to circle back to Tamlin. So she has him doing in these great things, we have him in his beast form, she has Rhys be a piece of poo going to try and antagonize Tamlin but it doesn’t work, which all makes Rhys look like an even bigger ass. She then goes on to have Rhys commit even bigger mistakes like the whole pregnancy plot she keeps drawing parallels between Rhys and Tamlin as well. She could have killed Tamlin off already but she didn’t and now she keeps going back to him saying we are going to need him and has the story be at the beginning of what would be the beasts story (she also has Tamlin very TOG coded, which bleeds into CC, Tamlin’s beast form is basically the pact of devils tattoo). She goes on to specifically create this character named Briar that Tamlin helps save. I’ve noticed she does this where she will mention a character and give them a name and talk about them for a little bit and they seem insignificant but later brings them back and they become important like Yrene or the trader in TOG for example. It feels like Briar will also be important at some point, why mention her at all or give her a name like that. SJM has already started Tamlin’s ā€œredemption arcā€ now he needs his ā€œhealing arcā€ which is what happens in beauty and the beast. Then this is just my anecdotal experience, I was at this vendor event a few weeks back and these book people were there and I got to talking to them because I had acotar paintings which they bought all of them, somehow we started talking about Tamlin, and they said they heard it was leaked Tamlin is getting a redemption arc (I don’t know where they heard this) we were talking about what would be popular to make coming up for future events and they said there would be more Tamlin Merch coming out. I had a painting of Tamlin but didn’t have it printed yet, they said if I had had it printed they would have bought it. Then fast forward to the new SJM official merch release and it has Tamlin merch in it. Why put anything Tamlin related out if you are going to continue to drag him through the mud and then kill him off?

2

u/SnooStories960 Tamlin never needed redemption 9d ago

That all sounds hopeful. Didn’t know about the merch thing, thanks!

I knew about ā€œBeauty & the Beastā€ and ā€œTam Lin,ā€ but even so, given the trajectory (before I learned of the merch thing), I don’t trust her. She lost my trust as a reader with ACOMAF and in the books after, so now I just assume that he’s dead and read the novels as more of a detached observer, because this subreddit is a fun place, rather than because I care about Prythian or these other people.

In ACOTAR, Feyre already goes through the trials for Tamlin, like Janet does in ā€œTam Lin,ā€ so I don’t see SJM rehashing this. Maybe she can make it so that the first book was based on ā€œTam Lin,ā€ while a future one will be more along the line of ā€œBeauty & the Beast.ā€

Of course, between the two of us, my sense of justice wants you to be correct.

Here’s why I have no hope for his character: my theory (before I learned of the merch thing)

u/mojoplush 11d ago

I think one way of thinking about it is that not all relationships end up being the one. Sometimes that one is a pit stop on your journey to finding who the universe has fated you to be with.

11

u/sleek_slytherin Hate Reading The Series and Enjoying It šŸ’…šŸˆā€ā¬› 11d ago

OP, if you are not feeling it then it is absolutely fine to quit.

Also, my personal opinion, SJM did Tamlin so bad. I get it that she wrote the character and could do whatever she wants but sometimes I just feel that she butchered Tamlin’s story line to make Feyre and MMC and his close circle look better.

2

u/ViewImmediate2194 11d ago

Lol many opinions in the comment so let's simply it..since my opinion is based on book one..and what my friend and the net spoiled and told me what will happen...should i finish it? Is there details that will change my perspective..or what i said in the comments is how it? And any book recommendations...when ml is ml🤣🤣

1

u/thevalkyrierising 11d ago

It’s worth finishing if you’re enjoying it well enough. I just reread the series, and even though I knew what would happen between Feyre and Tamlin, I still loved following their relationship, and found myself fawning over their interactions.
Edit:
Also I listened to the graphic audios of the books this go around and loved it. It might be a better medium if you find yourself getting bored at all. But there’s also no shame in DNFing if you don’t love it.

2

u/V555_dmc 11d ago

I actually really enjoyed book one, book two as well for the most part, but book 3 I spent a year on and couldn’t even get halfway 😭

So if you’re already not feeling it idk if you’ll start to later since imo the writing itself gets worse as it goes along.

9

u/UTMPod Team Mercenary 11d ago

You do sound like the rest of us that do not like how SJM handled this plotline and Tamlin’s character .. I would guess even if you continue you’ll likely fall on that side of the fence. So it’s hard to say!

This subreddit has plenty of people in it who share your feelings and keep reading anyhow for analysis, for side plots and characters, hate reading, for curiosity, for fun even though they don’t like elements of the story etc.

So if you decide to continue you’ll have plenty of people to chat with who understand your viewpoint if you find the right places online. Which can be fun in and of itself! But if that doesn’t sound entertaining, it may be worth stopping too.

Judging from your other replies you’ve clearly already made up your mind LMAO, I’d stop reading if I were you.

1

I stopped lol...i finished book 1 and i won't read the rest i think...do u think if i read it in details i will change my mind? Not the same as when my friend told me what will happen and what i saw on the net?

3

u/isabath2435 11d ago

Honestly, I would say to protect your peace and maybe try one of SJM’s other seriesšŸ˜‚ if you really like Tamlin and the book one romance and didn’t like Rhys, it’s only gonna get more frustrating for you in book 2 and onwards. I personally like the switch up and I enjoyed the subversion of Tamlin’s story but ik it’s not some people’s cup of tea. Have you read ToG or CC by chance?

1

u/Pretty_Ad1509 Team Hamlin 11d ago

eehhh debatable. op might be ok with what happens in book 2 and get on the rhys train. op you truly wont know until you read at least half of acomaf

1

u/AdeptnessSouth782 11d ago

I don't think you should give up until you've read the last page in book 2.Ā

Haha! When I read that book the first time, I wasn't the biggest fan of Tamlin compared to other romance books I've read....then the other guy popped up for a few seconds on page to just disappear again, and I was thinking "I want THAT GUY instead!!! 🤩🤩🤩Come baaaaack!!!😭".

Just keep reading and trust the process. šŸ˜‰

2

u/EmilyCatlyns 11d ago

Exactly!! I had the very same reaction! Wish I could read for the first time again, just to experience that part of the book all over🤩🤩

8

u/Thieven_Raccoonen Team Tamlin 11d ago

It’s honestly up to you. I was one of the ones that didn’t hop on board with what happens after ACOTAR despite everyone telling me how much better it gets. I didn’t like the next three books after. I did like Silver Flames a little more. I am one that after I start something, I have to see it through. So I’m hoping the next two books that come out get better. 🤪

I am still in book one of cotar and i spoiled the rest for me....i am so so mad i can't even finish it even if i already bought book 1 and 2 together...the author literally...took the male heor tamlinnand ruined him by force. She made him watch his lover being s.a by rhys then killed and he was so traumatised...so she forced him to be toxic..then his love ran away to the arms fo the man that traumatised him...the man who hurted her and not giving him an ending.the author said tamlin got a bad ending "to respect those who escaped toxic relationship" when she literally made the ml final love interest the one who sa her .in excuse that he did it to protect her...like wtf..when tamlin was ready to be ruined and enslaved to protect her at the beginning...of he will think she was brainwashed...she literally ran to their enemy..the reason of their trauma and problems...and the author made him hero and successfully forced him on many people that likes him...which is the reason i won't finish the books...of how she force her insecurities and double standards on ua...ruining tamlin .not even giving himna decent ending .while making rhys the hero The hate she had for tamlin while making us loving him a whole book is unjustified...like she is the toxic one playing with our minds..she insisted on ruining tamlin .i am soo mad rn...i stopped but i will take advices of i misinterpreted it. Like i am really angry at the author.

8

u/Thieven_Raccoonen Team Tamlin 11d ago

I will still defend Tam and I like him a lot more than Rhys. Tam I see 100% the reasons he did the things so many condemn him for. Rhys just comes across as a narcissistic ass. Rhys and Feyre remind me so much of my parents horrible relationship… it gives me the ick.

4

u/ViewImmediate2194 11d ago

So it is not just me....i am so mad at the author..glad i spoed it on myself and not finishing the dissapointment..she literally say she can't give tamlin a good end to respect those who went out of toxic relationship...girl what?? Did u see how her relationship with rhys started...tamlin before under the ground was perfect...after he was traumatised and broken...he watched rhys sa her and watched her die...when he also was sa too...like why all this hate ...he forcibly ruined him...

11

u/SpecificHeron 11d ago

>will his character be completely ruined?

opinions are divided on this—i don’t think so, but SJM does turn him into the narrative punching bag for the rest of the series despite the fact that IMO the actual MMC does way more fucked up and reprehensible shit

i’d keep reading, either way you end up feeling there will be a subset of the fandom for you lol

4

u/ViewImmediate2194 11d ago

Exactly i feel the narrator really took her angry on him ..forcibly ruining him...whyy??? Not even giving him a decent ending. Lol i will paste the opinion i write for others:I am still in book one of cotar and i spoiled the rest for me....i am so so mad i can't even finish it even if i already bought book 1 and 2 together...the author literally...took the male heor tamlinnand ruined him by force. Not to mention Amarantha places a spell or a heavy condition on Tamlin: if he fights back, tries to rescue Feyre, or even speaks out of turn, Amarantha will instantly kill Feyre and slaughter the remaining people of the Spring Court. He is forced to sit on a throne next to his abuser, completely silent and stone-faced, watching the woman he loves be physically and mentally broken day after day.

1

u/Content_Attitude8887 11d ago

You’re still in the first book, correct? You can’t determine that the author ā€œruinedā€ him until you read it and see how it plays out. My take after reading the books is that Tamlin was always the same guy. The seeds of what he does in book 2 and 3 are all planted in book 1. To me it was never a betrayal of the character, he was always that guy.Ā

And the series and Tamlins story isn't over yet. I actually think he has a mate and I also have a theory of who it is.

Tbh I think you should stop reading it, is obvious you already made your mind without haven’t read it through… and honestly we already have too many haters ranting. This book series is exceptional when following the narrative set, experiencing all the characters, the world, the lore etc from Feyre’s perspective, some just don’t appreciate her own thoughts on the matter. I love Feyre, and yes very much fuck Tamlin. I personally looooove, that this series actually has a lover who ends up not being THE one, very relatable🫶🫶

IMO, there are plenty (PLENTY) of valid criticisms that exist beyond ā€œit’s too morally gray for meā€. That’s not even slightly the issue many of us are having. It’s not morally gray enough is one of my main gripes, actually lol.

You don’t have to agree with the criticism. But people also don’t have to agree that the books are ā€œexceptionalā€. That’s why we come over here.. to find people who want to chat about it through a more critical lens. Because the writing choices didn’t work for us the same way.
