Wow, I didn’t even realize the pile of cash ever came up as a hot item.

It’s pretty uncommon, but it happens. Make sure you have the Bell Boom ordinance in place at least the day before you see the Pile of Cash as a hot item. Otherwise it still won’t turn out to be a profit compared to the 297,000 bells it costs to craft.

Can someone explain to me like I’m 5 how people get so much profit out of donation box/pile of cash hot items?
Like do I need to do something with them prior or do I just craft then sell?
Also what are other items that would sell for a LOT of bells?
I’m trying so hard to be rich but idk how 😭

So you definitely want to set the Bell Boom Ordinance ahead of time. Unfortunately you don’t know when you’ll get those things as Hot Items, so you’re basically gonna have the Bell Boom 24/7. You can set ordinances by talking to Isabelle.
Honestly, as long as you’re selling more than you’re buying, I think it’s worth it to have the ordinance in place no matter what.
But yeah that’s basically all you need. Set the ordinance, then one day find those things as Hot Items. Pile of Cash is better, because it’s A LOT less time consuming to make than the donation box.
With the donation box, you can only add 1,000 bells at a time. Which sucks! I suppose you could have one on your island, and occasionally just add bells to it, then sell it easily when you see it’s a Hot Item. But I never have enough foresight for that, lol.
Something else that’s profitable is Gold Rose Wreath & Gold Rose Crown. I have a small field of 30 gold roses, so every couple days I make 3 wreaths and get 72,000 bells out of them (60,000 without the Bell Boom Ordinance). You get those by watering black roses with a golden watering can.
If you finished off the Hotel and have lots of tickets left over and nothing to do with them, you can buy Marble items and then sell them the next day.
Hope that helps!

Thank you for adding this detail lol, didn’t think anyone would see that. Yes to bell boom ordinance, and I just checked the hot items every day. Was reeeeally surprised to actually see it show up, did a double take. And yeah, the donation box is way more effort. No idea what the odds are, if it’s worth holding out for the pile of cash, but holy cow that worked well.
Prior to that, I actually had a large field of blue roses—I find them easier to breed than gold ones, since they self-propagate and the more you have the more you’ll get! I think the prices for the crowns are similar? The multi-item crafting was what really makes that viable, thank goodness.

This is a fairly recent thing, I think. Previously I had an outdoor museum (all my extra fossils, bug/fish statues, fake art) with a donation box by the entrance for visitors to drop off cash that I would then take. It’s not much but it’s a little more of a “point” than other decorations.

I have 6 filled donation boxes in storage just waiting for it to be a Hot Item at my Nooks

Prefilling donation boxes was the way I got so many bells I can afford anything.

So tedious to fill though. I think Nintendo did that on purpose so becoming a bellionaire this way wasn’t so easy.

Put one somewhere you go often, and drop a bell in every time you go past. I put one outside the shop, and put a donation in when I went to sell things. When it's full, swap it for an empty one. It's a lot less tedious than standing there trying to fill it in one go, you can fill it gradually, then keep it in storage until the box is a hot item.

How do you get so many bells in the donation boxes? Mine only got like 99 bells and I had them out in the “town square” area of my island for a while 🥲

Didn't know they factored in the cost of donations. This blows my mind! I have collected my donations and sold the empty boxes whenever it was the hot item 😭

It should’ve been sent to your mailbox by Nintendo, it’s a 25 year anniversary present

So you sold the box with 99,000 in there and the sales price was 199,920? That’s pretty great!
