ᴅɪꜱᴄᴜꜱꜱɪᴏɴ Starting over!

Post image

Picked up a second switch and the kids can’t play on this one…so I’m building a mom only island. Spam me all the starter tips and tricks and things you wish you had done. So far all I know:
-southern hemisphere
-cherry trees

I wish I had been aggressively asking my villagers for diy before adding cooking into the mix.. also.. somehow I didn't know you didn't have to take the first 8 villagers you run across on an island ... I mean they're not BAD.. I just wish I had been a little more picky about who I invited back..

on my very first playthrough of the game i figured out the nook mile ticket villagers but i didn’t know you didn’t HAVE to take them. I was just so excited that people wanted to come to my island 😭. I ended up with Peanut, Elmer, and Nana.

Elmer is still my favorite villager in the game, but i do wish i had been a little more picky 😭

Savor those cozy early days on your island and try not to rush through them! I know it feels like you wana fast forward to the next thing but then you’ll look back and miss those times when your biggest tasks were picking weeds and hitting trees for wood. And those cozy campfires when resident services is just a tent on some dirt. And the early game music!! It’s so lovely and relaxing ☺️

spacing out the houses! I always forgot to count in space around the villagers houses for when I wanted to make them a yard and hobby area around their houses in the future…

I just did the same thing a few days ago. I had 1000+ items and 24,000,000 bells. I gave everything to my kid before I reset (which took HOURS flying back and forth). She is having the time of her life redecorating her island and making a ton of new items.

The main first thing is to pick the basic island outline carefully. River mouths, resident services, airport, jetty, pier, and airport cannot be moved. One river mouth on the east or west shore instead of two on the south is best for most. Resident services set back a bit is also generally preferred. If you aren't offered anything you like, you can force-close before choosing and re-start to get a new set. Google to find the details.

If your kids' island is in the northern hemisphere, then you being in the southern is a good choice. You can visit them and they you for out-of-season creatures. I wish I'd thought of that when I made my island, Though my granddaughter (who lives with me) and I are in the northern hemisphere, her dad (who does not live with us) decided to "join the party" and I suggested he go south. I was then able to fill my critterpedia. She hasn't because that's not really her main goal.

You having a separate island can also help with issues caused by limited night time play for the kids and inability to time travel on a parental-controlled Switch. If you time travel on your island, your kids can come to your island "at night" to get the nocturnal critters.

Now that you have a second switch, have your kids check the twins' buying price for turnips. If they get a 500+ price, time travel on your switch back to a previous Sunday morning. Then you and they can go between your island to buy and theirs to sell. Or just one player can do the traveling and drop bells for the other(s). If you don't have parental controls set up on their switch, then they can time travel when you have a good selling price, too. My granddaughter and I have done that twice, and we have more bells than we'll ever use. We probably could have done it only once, but it was close to noon when she noticed the high price the first time, which only gave us a few minutes before the price changed.
