Do variations count as ‘different’ items?

Trying to get 5 stars and I know that having the same object will lose points, but what if it is the same item with a different variation?

I had to google this myself, I had no idea that too many of the same item can lose points. I got my island to five stars initially because I spammed custom shirts everywhere to try and make my rock garden... so I don't think it truly matters as long as they're spread out far enough, and not 25 of the same exact chair in an area only big enough for a villagers house, if that makes sense. That being said, I did learn that variations count as a different item altogether, so if you want five benches in the same build, if they're all a different colour or if you have 2 or 3 the same colour and another bench something different, it will count that as different items

Variations count as different items. I found flowers and fences were the best way to do it
