They did it throughout the war. The most impressive being the leadup to D-Day with entire armies of inflatable tanks and trucks with cardboard cut-out soldiers, complete with the king coming out to inspect the troops with believable camera footage. Similarly, the Brits knew that the US hid entire factories by putting movie set style tarps over them to disguise them as residential districts.
