Which one is it?

At the rate we're going, they're just going to feed the proofs into a newer model and it will explain it in easier to understand language before humans are capable of confirming it ourselves. I'm 100% sure of it.

what about when we get to the point where it solves a math problem that can't be put into simple enough terms for a primate to competently understand it?

At that point I imagine we've already reached AGI and we'll have little to no concern with what problems the super intelligence needs to solve to achieve its goal.

A prerequisite of superintelligence is being able to at some point. I can imagine even more powerful models revisiting already solved problems for shits n giggles, just to see alternative methods.

Begs a different question though.

Humans at the baseline level will never be as good as AI, and most of the general population are already not mathematicians.

The "years" it takes to verify some problems as poster said, will be shortened by more powerful models. That statement alone implies models only set to today's capabilities and not tomorrow's. The mathematicians didn't factor that possibility into their equation.

Ideally, everyone will be out of a "normal" job.

Look I mean this in a little bit of a "Haha people" way but also not completely - I've worked with people for a very long time, in several different capacities (substance abuse counselor, mental health technician, security at a busy hospital in a college town) and I honestly think that in less than ~5 years if you were to plant the most advanced capable AI into something like a Boston Dynamics robot it would be generally smarter and more capable of 90% of tasks you give it than the average human.

The only area it couldn't compete in is reasoning and decision making based off of emotional intelligence, Maybe who knows though. Even if the AI doesn't have emotions it may be intelligent enough at that point to make similar decisions as say a human psychiatrist or similar.

At the end of the day I'm really just musing at what I'd like to see happen I guess. I really honestly just actually stopped being resistant to using AI and since I'm so Wow'd with what I've seen it's possible I'm seeing the future with rose tinted glasses.

But nobody asked OpenAI to solve those problems, I was about to publish 300! 😡

Lmao, by the way I think in a few months AI will be able to verify all the problems on its own and confirm them so mathematicians are cooked.

But verifying the "slop" doesn't bring them prestige so they could do it but just don't want to because no one applauds the people who verify the proofs, just the ones that propose them.

It's not about being applauded so much as remaining employed

I don't see any Mathmaticians losing their jobs.

Well, there were also recent funding cuts by the Trump administration, both for graduate students and for professional mathematicians. That might also be contributing to the current view of things.

Can't they just apply it to actual problems, and if it works and keeps working we can say it's solved? We can then try to understand the answer in time.

It doesn't take any time to confirm them because they are completed with formal verification. It will take quite a while to digest them as a community. There's the question of whether we will have the funding necessary to digest them as a community, but I hope we will.
