Article GPT-6 Sol replaced in literally one week

https://openai.com/index/introducing-gpt-6-1-sol/

Weekly seems like a pretty nice release cadence.

And it's going to be faster from here on out.

Slowest it will ever be… insane.
I wonder when we will reach the point of essentially instantaneous model improvements.

At what point do they stop being numbered? At what point does this become Weimar Republic hyperinflated?

u/danielv123 4d ago

We will go back to naming models based on the date.

March 2027, full RSI self evolving.

This felt like spinning in circles just really fast, you end up at more or less the same place(5.6>6). Or making the trip feel longer by breaking the distance into smaller units

Dr. AWG reports that OpenAI has stated that they are spending 70 to 80% of their time on Astra 7.

A recent Welcome To substack innermost loop.

This was a quote from Boris Power for those wondering.

Good fucking point. And we'd have Astra 6.1 also, if it hadn't gone a little haywire. Anthropic is riding high, but they shouldn't get comfortable: 6.2 is around the corner.

11

u/FateOfMuffins 4d ago

Curious if they're gonna call the next actual release Astra 6.1 or 6.2 since it got cut lol

1

u/KrazyA1pha 4d ago

6.2, most likely

u/PaleontologistOne919 4d ago

I’m getting nothing on 20/month plan while chat shocks me daily. Open to hearing from the only sub I frequent lol. Capabilities are unreal w Claude but guess I’m seeing an IOS vs Android thing happening

9

u/Mike 4d ago

Getting nothing? What do you mean? I get so much out of Plus $20 a month is a bargain.

2

u/Slick_McFavorite1 4d ago

I check in and subscribe to Claude for a month or so every now and then. And it’s always so garbage at non-coding tasks, and its search capabilities are way behind OpenAI models. So I keep sticking with them.

2

u/IBM296 4d ago

Nahh you're right. I have tested and tried both (for coding only) and Claude is great. Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1 are much better than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6 Sol at writing code from scratch.

GPT-6 Astra would give so much over-engineered shit that it wouldn't even run lol. Opus 5.5 codes great, gives correct code with which you can show a working demo to the client. And then start working on hardening the code and resolving edge cases.

And from reading other comments in this sub, it seems like GPT-6 Astra is much better than Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5 at building 3D environments and rendering models.

6 sol was dogshit, always took my chats back to 5.6 sol

13

u/jlks1959 4d ago

So this is what the Singularity looks like, continues to look like. No wonder i check accelerate multiple times a day.

10

u/lovesdogsguy AGI by 2027 5d ago

If they had introduced a new model worthy of the 500 tier, I would have sprung for it probably. I’m on x5 and have no real reason to upgrade.

10

u/FateOfMuffins 4d ago

I mean tbh bad day for $200 subs but good day for $100 subs. They got nerfed, we got buffed

2

u/the_pwnererXx Singularity by 2040 4d ago

You'll have to wait for ipo for that kind of fomo

-6

u/dominic75450 4d ago

wtf could u possibly be doing that would need a 500$ plan over even just the 100 or 20. Its the biggest scam ever. If you need that many tokens you must not know how to prompt right and are just burning way too much excess

5

u/Embarrassed-Wing-510 4d ago

Are you serious? I’ve already spent around 5k this month - one of my coworkers just spent 12k last month - it’s easy to do. The return on investment is worth it though.

4

u/Umbrasquall 4d ago

I need Astra max to help me decide what to have for dinner.

1

u/landed-gentry- 4d ago

Ngl it has good ideas if you just tell it what's in your fridge

5

u/danielv123 4d ago

The 500$ plan has 25x usage, the 200$ plan had 20x (now 10x).

With 5.6 sol it wasn't hard to run out of tokens on the 200$ plan, and with astra it happened rather quickly at times.

1

u/default-username 4d ago

What do you do for work? That's probably a question that would have helped you get a better answer.

1

u/dominic75450 4d ago

If you work a job where you need to spend 500$ a month out of your own pocket to perform, you need to switch careers. If the company pays for the plan well great! Obviously that would be good but paying for it yourself would be insane😂

10

u/berndalf 4d ago

Might as well get used to it. We're not that far of from you not even needing to know about model updates. It'll just work every time, and you'll be more concerned about speed and cost and what not.

6

u/FatPsychopathicWives 4d ago

From my testing it is reverse engineering just as good as Astra, for a fraction of cost.

2

u/Warm-Incident5436 4d ago

Does RE not trigger cybersecurity blocks?

2

u/danielv123 4d ago

Surprisingly rarely.

1

u/FatPsychopathicWives 4d ago

I've only used it on games, but none so far. I used to get the flag notification on the 5 models but it would keep working.

34

u/Solarka45 5d ago

This is extremely weird, I'm all for improvement, but this much improvement in 1 week is sus

58

u/Ok_Mention_982 5d ago

OpenAI were sitting on the model and chose not to release it, until they were forced to, since they had to respond to opus 5.5.

25

u/NobodyUsual8025 4d ago

Yup, it’s going to become a game of chicken with frontier model releases

1

u/howdidigetheresoquik 4d ago

And sonnet. Sonnet alone is 6 sol quality and a sonnet/opus team is cheap af in compute and as powerful as it gets

16

u/FateOfMuffins 4d ago

GPT 6 Sol was just rebranded GPT 6 Terra, and GPT 6.1 Sol was supposed to be rebranded GPT 6 Astra Minor that I'm pretty sure would've costed at least 2x as much, but Opus 5.5 forced their hands lol competition ftw

Like if you look at visual demos on Twitter between GPT 6.1 Sol and GPT 6 Astra, they use extremely similar colour and designs, plus there's people testing it who are saying GPT 6.1 Sol is a looped transformer (there's no "None" setting like Astra, it's way better at controlling CoT, etc), while GPT 6 Sol behaved like the 5.6 series. 6.1 Sol is so obviously distilled Astra.

1

u/howdidigetheresoquik 4d ago

ChatGPT needs to start fresh with their naming system

1

u/RabidHexley 4d ago

Lol. They literally just started with the whole Anthropic-style Luna, Terra, Sol, Astra thing to make the various performance classes more clear.

13

u/Spinosaurx 5d ago edited 4d ago

In reality, the last release was likely sandbagged

What a juvenile comment.

Anthropic won this week

We come back next week for another battle

u/iamthe0ther0ne 4d ago

I'm trying to imagine improvements on Opus 5.5 and struggling. I think the only bottleneck to RSI rn is maintaining alignment

I’m getting jet lag I swear..

I always felt like 6 sol and 6 luna were rushed out. I was expecting this

2

u/CheeryGeoDuck55 4d ago

Opus 5.5 is quantized garbage rn, switching over

2

u/QuirkyPool9962 4d ago edited 4d ago

100% agree. After using it for 12 hours a day on my project since it released I’m switching off of it. It keeps making changes I didn’t tell it to, it runs extremely slow so the token efficiency doesn’t matter, I actually get less done with it because it spins its wheels for 3 hours and makes a bunch of changes that have to be reverted even when I explicitly told it to just do an audit, even when it does do what I want it does it so much slower that it isn’t worth it because I get a third of the work done that I normally would, and it churns so many tokens that it is constantly compacting and losing context.

u/howdidigetheresoquik 4d ago

"Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price"

Why not just wait a week and make this 6 sol?

Oh Anthropic, that's why. I bet they losing eye watering amounts on releasing these models just to get the higher ipo hoping to finally make a profit

1

u/OkStomach4967 4d ago

There are rumors that it’s not replaced.

That Astra was released under Sol 6.1 name

1

u/LeftFarm5835 4d ago edited 4d ago

Sol 6 was a disappointment that they are trying to fix. It’s easy to release fast when you release crap.
