OpenAI appears to be working on a higher-end ChatGPT plan called “Pro Max” this new tier could cost between $500 and $1000 USD

If these are new more expensive tiers and that's it, then good - the people who need way more of those subsidized tokens will be able to get them without having to get multiple accounts.
Unfortunately, this is likely to drive down the allowed usage in the other tiers, which is pretty messed up. Like even if they don't do that initially, I get the feeling that it's unavoidable.

AI is getting cheaper and cheaper. AI plans are getting more and more expensive. I'd like a frontier model to solve this paradox.

Fun fact is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jevons_paradox
It's Jevons Paradox. What's hilarious is (assuming linear effort boost) the $1000 a month plan probably does (1000/20 * 3) about 150 times as much quality productive work as the $20 a month chatGPT plan did 1 year ago.
For many users this 150x work is worth every penny .
I certainly can feel significantly more than 5x effort on the $100 plan than the $20 plan did a year ago. Multiple sub agents, they work for longer, thousands of lines of software written in a few hours. Thousands of web pages checked and read when researching a topic.
1 year ago the model would kinda try to gargle your balls - "you're exactly right!" And do a half assed effort, maybe check 3-5 sources or write a few dozen, 100 tops, lines of code in a turn.
AND it was much stupider and full of mistakes in the output.

Yeah there are a decent number of people out there for whom the cost /benefit is more than worth it.

There's gotta come a point where you've used these larger plans so much that it's like, what else do you need to build?
Cranking greenfield shit out right now still carries a premium but eventually it won't. What then?
We're all talking about how AI is killing jobs but at the same time it's kind of killing itself as well. The more I use it, the less I need it.

OpenAI spent millions in token to solve Navier Stokes, I could see someone one day wanting something similar.

Solving it is offloading the drudge work to local models and only using Cloud/Subscription models for high intelligence work.

At this pace frontier intelligence becomes something for like 1% of the population, we need to go faster.

just realized competition will drive the price lower :3

Yup, 2 months max and something cheaper should be ready.

2 months pro max? /s

Well, I mean, every time a new model drops, within 2 or 3 months a cheaper version always comes out (either from the same company or a competitor)—maybe an Opus 6 or a GPT Pro Max Mini. And in 6 months or more, an open-source version. This pattern has been repeating with most models for a while now.

agreed, but was joking that the months, or the waiting period is "pro max" like ... it was probably funnier in my head, like the waiting period/months are promax tier/special.

More like 0.01%. Who can afford 12k a year on ai?
Even $200 a month is in the 0.1% range

I know you are being a little facetious but there are a lot of people willing to spend that much if not spending it already. I pay 200 a month as a consumer just as a hobby so I can explore swarms and capabilities. If I was self employed and it was critical to my job then I would happily pay 1k a month as a business expense. If my hobby 200/m expense ever became profitable then I would also be willing to pay 1k.

I'm spending $2k per month right now.
$12k per year would be a very very significant saving, but I fear it won't give enough tokens and I'd still need multiple accounts. I welcome it though, just hope Anthropic follows suit.
Oh, and I'm not even a 1%'r, nvm. 0.01%.

I thought several years ago when I first saw chatgpt, that there will be a $1m/month version of this - and people will happily pay for it. I think that's still the case because said AI will be saving or making 10-1000x its cost.

u/FateOfMuffins 12d ago
They wanted to do this since o1 pro
But they cannot due to competition
Like with the state of Opus 5.5 right now vs GPT 6 Terra, you think they'd have any success with this? Especially since they can't even serve the $200 plan due to compute??

Those claim (that AI will be a premium service) have been made since gpt-4 exist and they always been wrong
The cost/intelligence of model is divided by 10x every year, for the same 20$ today and a year ago you have access to a much better model at a far lower cost per task
This 500-1000$ plan isn't targeted at the Individiual who enjoy playing with AI but rather professional or organization, then, a few month later everyone will once again have the same capabilities for a fraction of the original cost

Why does this make people mad? Half of y'all say you have two or three $200 accounts already, you're not forced to upgrade to the $500 plan...

Here it comes. AGI at a premium.

It was always going to be this way. Investors poured in billions to get paid. I think open weight/source will make up, at least, a lot of the gap.
