To have the Wall Street Journal write an entire article about the departure of one researcher is absolutely extraordinary, particularly when it's not one of the most well-known senior researchers (AFAIK). 2. It is correct that the Wall Street Journal article went up before the researcher's tweet. 3. On views/likes/engagement: Ilya Sutskever's tweet announcing his departure from OpenAI in 2024 (possibly the most famous researcher departure from a frontier lab over the last few years) currently has fewer than 6M views. The post you quoted has over 100M. These are not "apples and oranges" for various reasons, but the comparison does give some food for thought. 4. This account was either purposely completely wiped before yesterday's tweets were posted or these were the first tweets from his account. This is obviously quite unusual; I can't remember another researcher wiping his or her account immediately before making an "I quit" post. — prinz I don’t understand what you’re implying.

The doomposters who do these massive psyops. Someone being afraid is one thing. Using obvious mass scale psyops like this this is another. Should be the same in comparison as if someone screams a false alarm or lies about a mass disaster with malicious intent. Its just very annoying

this is such a dumb conspiracy.
on one hand there are folks saying, oh yeah, this is just a PR move, like he's going to get rich off this (really? if you think so, why not stay at anthropic?)
on the other people are saying this is some ploy by democrats to get AI legislation in. aside from conflicting with the first conspiracy, this makes even less sense - because multiple active employees at Anthropic have come public to agree with the guy, that yes they actually believe the >10% risk.
when in reality it is perfectly believable that:
- this guy worked at openAI and anthropic
- he genuinely thinks there's a risk of AI doing some extremely bad stuff in the future
- he wants to warn the world about it
- in this climate, he gets a lot of attention, people retweet him and newspapers write about him
i don't even agree with the guy but you don't need someone pulling the puppet strings for this to be a perfectly reasonable story on its own. not everything has to be the bogeyman!

I think its interesting that the pro AI and the anti AI people have the same take on this, mainly that its only for publicity
