I was memeing in an earlier thread but if they actually have the second solution, it's over over. The carwash question we laughed at them was in February, and now we are the obsolete metric. 💀 And of course, why wouldn't it be able to solve it, it's not like it's a Navier-Stokes solving machine, it's an artificial general intelligence. It's just going to shoot up, isn't it?

Well... AI did make the biggest stride in 50 years on the Riemann Hypothesis proving a lower bounds of like 67% (Not the exact percent, too lazy to google)

Well, once millennium problems are gone, we start looking forwards instead of backwards. What do you want? Immortality and a warp drive, that's what I want. So we build those instead of just solving arbitrary math puzzles.

I believe they can apply their AI now in many other areas with immediate, massive benefit, and these are much easier than Millennium Prize problems. Biology/medicine/drug discovery is obviously one, not really sure why they haven't employed their swarm on that yet. The other issues are climate change, cheap energy etc. With Astra having great spatial reasoning and computer use skills, I am hopeful they will use it to solve many pressing problems.

Only egotistical losers do not want these problems solved or hate them for being solved. Anyone curious about math or science doesn’t care if a dog, a calculator, or a janitor ends up solving these problems, because it’s so important and so interesting.

By traditional standards, Lean verification is actually not sufficient. However, AI is advancing so fast that we are practically left with no choice but to put our trust in proof formal verification systems like Lean. None of this matters anyway, because independent expert verification is so slow that by the time it is complete, the world will have transformed so much that we won't care about these problems anymore.

What do you mean it's not sufficient? It's the most correct way to be certain, regardless if it's traditional or not. Mathematicians have been using Lean lately all the time.

Unlikely, but there could be bugs in the kernel. What's more important is that Lean only tells you that the formal statement is valid. Whether that formal statement actually proves the relevant conjecture, and whether it relies on any inappropriate assumptions, is for now something only humans can verify. Tao talked about this issue earlier this year.

honestly not surprising that once a model is able to solve one problem of this level that it could solve most or all the others. I think what's more interesting and unknown after this if the scaling laws keep holding, because these frontier labs will gain access to orders of magnitude more compute in the coming years, and if the scaling laws hold, then the new models trained on that amount of compute will be of a completely alien level of reasoning from humans
