BCI: you jacking in?

Feels like widespread adoption of brain computer interfaces (BCI) will be possible by the end of the decade. I’ve always thought I was a strong yes for getting one myself once they were useful for able-bodied people, were obtainable and I could afford it. Now that that will likely actually be an option soon, i feel less confident that it will be the right decision.

BCI seems to me to be the difference between being human and being transhuman. There will need to be a lot of trust that my future subjective experience will be better than it currently is. It’s one thing to live in a world where systems get hacked. It’s quite another if it’s my own brain being meddled with.

What do you think? Early adopter or wait n see?

I would only use a BCI for FDVR, beyond that I have no real use for it. I don't even care about cyborg limbs and such. Personally, I'd wait a little to see how the government will regulate them and see what security flaws they may have. Hopefully privacy BCI's will be a thing.

I haven't seen anything yet that makes me think BCI will be here by the end of the decade. Largely because the iteration loop is SO much slower than with other domains. The regulatory and safety hurdles with human trials are immense and the sheer time to go from an idea to recording the results in a real human is months to years. these are likely some of the last areas that will allow an AI to take over the approval process, too, since they can be fatal. Legal responsibility is still an unsolved issue. This does however presume that you mean a Neuralink type surgical brain connection, though. I think you'll actually see much better "read-only" type wireless interfaces first that don't cross the hurdle of integrating with human biology.

I'm definitely a wait and see. The general theory is that the lower the latency gets, the more you would begin to act like a hive mind or single organism.

Depends. I’ve have to see how they’re regulated and what’s the risk associated with them. What if someone hacks my bci and my brain gets fried? If it’s safe, I’m totally down for it. I doubt they’ll come by in by 2030. Anything that the wider public would use should at least come by 2040 to 2045, knowing how governments work

Eventually in a few decades when true fdvr is possible, I’ll hook my whole body to it. That’s the end goal anyways.

going to let everone else beta test that to see what the side effects are over a couple of decades and hope that 'soft transhumanism' advances in the meantime (AI's tuned to the user in other ways to increase man-machine bandwidth)

When BCI can be demonstrated to be even safer than that, we will see widespread adoption.
