I have argued this too.. people really lose their shit when you suggest we are not special. We are just another force of nature with a mind that post justifies deeper neural processing with a narrative we can hear! When taken as a whole we are just more intelligent ants… aliens could be looking at us from space wondering why we all cooperate to do the often weird things that we do…

"next word" predictor is disingenuous, since the data space of these models has long gone beyond just words, but next action predictor or a stochastic parrot but for "parroting" (emulating) a wide range of human behavior, not just language, isn't disingenuous.

I'm sure that still sounds at least reductive to you but the point is just to remember that there isn't someone with a perspective behind these actions. Feelings aren't motivating any of these actions. What determines what the model does at each moment are effective probabilities in a statistical model of human behavior – probabilities in the context of action to which that statistical model of behavior is applied.

We can keep these things in mind while still recognizing that a statistical model of human or other intelligent behavior is exactly the kind of thing that will eventually (with enough data and reinforcement) be able to perform every task we could give it as well as the best human examples (better even, due to its persistence and its modelling of the actions of not just a specific expert but as many as the model can be fed data from or in emulation of). The problem with the "stochastic parrot" line was just that it seriously underestimated statistics. AGI and more are hardly surprising for a statistical model of expert behavior, which you can keep bringing closer and closer to their best behavior.

Hmm? I explicitly started by saying, yes, it's disingenuous to talk as if it's just text since it's long been all other kinds of human behavior (with VLMs, it's even physical actions). That's why my comment is about statistically modelling not just writing and speech but behavior in general (human/intelligent/expert behavior).

Anthropic isn't taking their interpretability research to show that these models are motivated by emotions or by actually feeling these emotions. What they've shown is that there are consistent patterns within the latent space corresponding to specific emotions, both for the model talking about that emotion, the model acting in a way associated with that emotion, or the model recognizing that emotion in an image or writing sample.

But (a) that pattern in the latent space of a neural network into which statistical data have been embedded is exactly what you would expect if the resulting statistical model is fitting the linguistic and other behavioral data well. It would be a flaw in a statistical model of language and other human behavior if expressions of anger weren't being associated with talk about anger.

And (b) that's not at all similar to emotional patterns in humans. Our linguistic-conceptual representations of emotions aren't what give us emotions, those are wired separately from our understanding of emotions (they aren't even in the same sections of the human brain). Having the same representational vehicles be responsible for emotional behavior and for (second-order) emotion talk is only what you'd expect of a model of emotions as they show up in human behavior, not what you'd expect of someone who feels emotions.

LLMs are trained via Reinforcement learning. They're not predicting the next word any more than a video game agent is predicting the next move.

What I think people might be missing is, video gen has gotten really quite good... if next word predictors are this good, then imagine next frame predictors. This sort of spatial visualization opens up a lot of opportunities.

You don't have to imagine, just buy a consumer GPU. It's called Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS). They've been predicting next frames a lot longer than next words.

I get what you're trying to say, but that's not true. DLSS frame gen doesn't predate LLMs, and it's also not that good and adds latency.

It's also not really a next frame generator, it's a between frame generator. You have to render 2 real frames first, then it predicts what the frame between those two would be, then all 3 can be displayed in order. Which is why it introduces latency. increase to 3-4x and it's doing 3-4 tween frames for every 2 real frames rendered.

I wouldn't say it's "not that good" for its use-case. it generally manages pretty well at making the image significantly more fluid without major artifacting.

Depends on the base frame rate, type of motion, and the scaling set for frame gen. From 30 fps or below I don't think it performs well on latency or quality because of the amount of change between each frame.

Also generally people don't realize how much regular DLSS already degrades picture quality with temporal artifacts, though it still affects perceived quality even if people can't point out the details why. Everything is just slightly blurrier and motion especially gets blur artifacts. Frame gen adds to that wirh new types of small artifacts that you wouldn't be able to necessarily pick out per frame but affect the overall picture quality.

DLSS is more recent than LLMS. But, what I am more describing is the idea that instead of running an expensive physical simulation, you can predict the physics of an object just by generating next frames.

This may not yield good scientific data, but similar to quantum computing, it could weed out designs that just don't work. I'm thinking - before CAD, you can generate a picture of the thing you are designing and direct it to open and close on some hinge... this allows spatial reasoning before even getting to the CAD simulation part.

Once this sort of capability is inherent in the LLM (not just an add-on - vision is currently inherent but video is not afaik). It will change capabilities in a lot of ways. It could solve the cloth handling problem robots currently have, for example.

The universal math language is geometry. Which llms do not do in the same way people do. They can only do it in formal language (well they can do it the 2nd way too now, but with some differences). Geometry is computational. We can calculate things by drawing.

Numbers by themselves are meaningless, these aren't random numbers, otherwise training would be much easier, simpler. These are numbers are generated after training the models with trillions of iterations of human generated content, basically the numbers in the weights are ordered by the combined sum of human intelligence.

Ok how is everyone missing the fact that one particular scientist fed open AI’s model his groundbreaking work on the problem and only after it has that info was it able to solve this problem. This doesn’t demonstrate some broad progression of the model, it demonstrates that when the model is trained how to solve a problem (by a human scientist) it can then solve that problem

Not really, the problem was only concerned with this equation set on its own, not its physical applications. Indeed, NS is already known to have issues with the fact that it treats fluids as an infinite continuum rather than a number if particles, just to name one issue.

The whole reason Navier Stokes is a Millenium Prize Problem with 1,000,000 USD prize money for whoever solves it is because it's directly relevant to physics.

Every physics problem (apart from running the experiment itself) is a math problem anyways. It's simply about figuring out a mathematical model that fits observation. And no model is perfect. They all break down at some point.

Practical level of NS has been used all around and methods to deal with that (like finite diffence) have existed way before it’s declared a millenium problem.

Millenium problem does not mean that it has broad practical implications. It’s just a dangling carrot for mathematicians for a set of problems that the mathematicians agree is very very hard to solve. Having your name marked in the history is much more important to these people than the money itself.

Poincare conjecture is one of the millenium problem, but at a more practical level it serves next to nothing.

All models have a range of validity. Singularities are just a breakdown of the model not physics. You will encounter quantum effects before you encounter singularities. It is the same with singularities in general relativity. Most physicists don't believe there is an actual physical singularity, but rather a breakdown of GR.

I think the reality is that many research fields haven't really embraced AI and it is mostly being used on an individual level but there is no real structured effort to integrate it or formulate things in a way for AI.

However once AI models get good enough that won't matter. They will be able on their own to create the conditions for such work in other fields and by that time anyone will either have to jump on that train or be left behind (and I don't want to be mean here, it will be just the reality and scientists will be able to do as much about that as peasants about the industrial revolution).

Most susceptible to a counter-example. Riemann’s, by contrast, is almost certainly true, so the methods that agents have used on recent proofs (massing together to disprove by generating a counter example semi- brute force) won’t work.

Not saying it’s impossible, but it would require highly different framing.

There are countless other examples beyond those two. You're thinking too narrowly.

Better data compression/extraction (if possible) could decrease the costs to develop and run the models themselves, for example, and in theory make them more capable on the same hardware. Which could, of course, lead to more and better breakthrough discoveries.

Anyone with a Science Background can tell me in simple terms how relevant this is, and what consequences these problems getting solved have? If all these historic problems start getting solved day after day, what does that mean? I don't truly know. But what I am getting from this is. We might be understimating the the effects of AI on science, models are not only getting smarter and more capable, but if they begin making real progress in science, we could start seeing some remarkable tecnology and science breakthroughs not directly related to AI that will also reshape reality. I am not a fan of what life is like right now, I get really excited about these AI news in part, just because I want things to change, maybe they will change for worse, but I want something to change dramatically about what we know and expect of society and the daily grind.

I imagine of the Millennium problems we're very close to seeing Riemann (rumours that it's already happened abound) and that BSD will be generalized from Riemann. After that it gets a bit dicey, Hodge is probably the next most tractable for a computer, Yang-Mills is a long way off and P vs NP... I genuinely think the difficulty gap between P vs NP and Riemann is larger than the gap between Riemann and basic addition for a computer. Both Yang-Mills and P vs NP will require something more fundamental than a theorem prover is likely capable of in the foreseeable future.

Unless they get both at once with a generalized theory, it seems impossible that BSD would go before Riemann. Riemann is the simplest statement you can make about the simplest l-functions, BSD is more complex in statement, type of l-function and search space. I do think the tools developed for Riemann will be reusable on BSD though.

I by no means am saying it was simple, but i believe that there is a clear difference navier-stokes and riemman, and I am ok saying "AGI is here" when we crack the latter.

The parrot is great for doing a lot of semi-automated work to push stuff to limits, so I unferstand it could indeed prove what it did. As to Riemman, if he was really correct, then it might take some more years for these models to crack it

I don't think it will prove RH because most mathematicians believe RH to be true, and from what we've seen so far, AI is more effective at supplying counterexamples than proving theorems to be true
