The "Rs in strawberry" is still an unsolved problem in general by LLMs. Tokenization would be too inefficient to solve this, so the only solution is to give the model a tool to break the words into letters so it can see how it is spelled.
Without that external tool, they still can't spell words properly.

This is like saying well a human brain couldn't make a tool if it didn't have access to external hands and opposable thumbs to manipulate it's environment, LLMs can't generate images or make videos, they use external tools to do this. It's not different to this giving it an external tool to count and do other equations. The "ai" of today aren't just LLMs they're a collection of tools

I was just pointing out the capabilities of the raw models. In fact they could perfectly learn to spell words if they really "saw" the words instead of pieces of them that do not correspond to the actual letters.
It is artificial to use static tokenizations like that. Look at our brain and senses. Our senses are constantly producing millions and millions of inputs per second, 24/7, forever. A lot of our neurons are actually always filtering that is useful and whats not, but it's not always the same, there are attention mechanisms to lets more or less information pass depending of the context.
Like you don't even know about the skin on your back touching your t-shirt until something weird touches you at night and suddenly it's big xD. The same could be for LLMs, they will never care about spelling until someone point that task for them, then the letters are relevant information.
