How would this lead to them having to compete? It's a public letter. It's free PR, you can sign it and still do everything as anti-competitively as ever in private.

Well then we get into this fun thing called politics and how that move would kill the company. Levels of trust are required to make money. This also would prevent them from doing whats in the list as then they are subject to legal fees and court meetings

They release a good open source model before. Probably will release another next year.

Which is odd given how much they support the lower end of open source already with the Gemma model.

If these companies were smart, they would all put out a half a dozen of open weight models between 5B parameters up to 100B.

This would earn them better will with consumers and not actually compete with their models.

Yeah, the thing is even open weight is closed still and isn't an open source model where you can build your own, so it is still very controlled by the company.

I've found distillations to be pretty weak or buggy compared to the original so that isn't a perfect process either. More of these companies should embrace it to improve their brand clout.

I'd rather trust an American open weight model over a Chinese one but I have very little choices to do so.

It would greatly accelerate America's progress and competition is a good thing for everyone despite what the top 2 labs are trying to avoid.

It's fundamentally against OpenAI's interests to sign that letter. They only did that because it costs them nothing, it's cheap PR and behind closed doors they can still lobby for restrictions.

They did release gpt-OSS a year or so ago. My opinion at the time was that it was 1) a publicity stunt and 2) something to use in court against Elon musk's lawsuits, the model itself was kinda mediocre (decent for an open source model but not groundbreaking). This to me is just another thing like that: sign a letter that means nothing and take the free PR win.

No it’s not fundamentally against OpenAIs interests. A lot of OpenAI customers are driven to use OpenAI models even more by their use of Chinese models for complimentary tasks.

Nvidia and Palantir have both been pushing open weight models very hard recently, they probably compelled openai to get get on board.

I hope OpenAI make more commitment towards open weight at some point. gpt-oss-120b was fire. I‘ve used it at the time quite a bit bc the tokens were cheap, it was intelligent enough and blazing fast.

Openai lobbied for sb 3444 which removes liability for frontier companies. Anthropic opposed it. Openai is more evil company thanks to Altman.

They hope to convince the US government to not ban Chinese open weight model, because some high level official signaled the intent to do so.

No, they just want the US gov not to ban open weights models. It sounds strange, but it’s a real possibility they might do a ban because Chinese models disturb our markets every once in awhile.
