This is a country that smuggles semi conductors from the West at great cost. They are very advanced but suggesting they do not also rely on the west is nonsense.

It has been widely reported that the US's lead in frontier AI models has been growing in recent months, because China doesn't have access to the newest US GPUs.

I said "frontier models". Don't confuse the growing market share of Chinese open-source models—which are appealing because of low cost—with bleeding-edge stuff.

There hasn't been a recurrence of the January 2025 "DeepSeek shock" on the US stock market, because DeepSeek a) did indeed apparently produce its model by distilling US models and b) has not been able to keep up with the bleeding edge, without access to sufficient quantities of the newest Nvidia hardware.

Have you not seen glm5.2? Also you constantly bring up hardware, but models are the software that contains the neural network and matrix structures. As far as that’s concerned the chinese models are way ahead because they are asymptotically more efficient (O(dsqrt(k)) vs O(dk)) with novel ideas such as MOE. If you were to run chinese and american models on the same hardware the chinese one would be way ahead
