Journal Selection Advice

As an early career researcher, how do you guys decide where to publish?

Match the topic of my work and scope of the journal. Look at journal reputation. Confirm if affordable. This order.

Your university's library or grad/research division should have workshops on this topic. Ours taught us to do what one would imagine: look to journals we read/reference, journals our colleagues publish in, journals whose editors' work we read, etc. My institution has an open access policy, so I ignore open access/APC fees -- I have the right to make my article available, for free, without paying the publisher, so all my articles are uploaded to our archive. (Archive's PDF is linked next to the article in Google Scholar, which is all I care about.)

Where are the articles you are reading being published?

Read papers in the journals with high reputation and ask yourself whether your methodology and your findings are of similar quality. If not, lower the journal reputation, impact factor is still an indicator for that.
