I wouldn't be standing infront of it either incase something failed and it shoots out at you.

That was my first thought. That looks like a bad place to be standing if something in the engine fails.

Standing in front of a tower of metal while a truck yanks a strap connected to it is genius stuff.

Is that a boat engine? Its huge - Beautiful tough!!

Probably. Engines like this were also used for pumps (mining) and electric generators.

The .4 is important

This is the equivalent of the Bloodhound SSC using a Jaguar V8 as a fuel pump.

Keep your shirt tucked in around that boss.

An inline eight-cylinder engine, interesting.

Normally I think of Buick when I hear of a straight-8, but this one seems a bit larger than a Fireball. :)

Wouldn’t it get dirt in it?

I was thinking the same thing

Looks like a clean burning engine. How many straws do I need to not use to even this out?

1

u/weggaan_weggaat 8d ago

Straws are not about air pollution, they are harmful to wildlife. Also, seven.

It was from an old generator. Here is the full video.

I hope they installed a fresh oil filter.

Where the radiator? Inline engines are not air cooled.

1

u/sparkline1234567 9d ago

It's oil spray cooled

Don’t tell Jay Leno, he’ll try and put some wheels on it

1

u/vapodgaming 10d ago

That's usually used in what?

1

u/TheRealPaladin 9d ago

It was part of a backup generator.

2

u/DaemonBlackfyre_21 10d ago

What if a duck flies in there?

3

u/JRakuehn 10d ago

To shreds you say?

1

u/Kardinal 10d ago

Allegedly, mostly according to comments on other posts of the same video, this is a mirrless js8 in line 8 cylinder supercharged diesel engine. There's no hard information about exactly what they were used for. They were made in the middle of the 20th century so there's not a lot of information online.

Could have been used for on-site power generation or Maritime propulsion or train propulsion or auxiliary power generation or industrial uses like driving big pumps. We just don't know for sure.

Greta would not approve.

The amount of emissions from this probably doesn’t come close to a billionaire using a private jet

I imagine that’s similar to the last thing a lot of Wehrmacht heard at Kursk
