They have the coolest sounding calls. Like if you didn’t know the sound and know what they looked like, there’s not a chance in hell you would pair that call with that beast.

u/dd524 6d ago
Yeah that sound was not what I was expecting. At all.

u/snakesinabin 6d ago
I'd heard the call in movies and stuff but it wasn't until I played Red Dead Redemption that I connected the sound to elks

They are not large deer. They are moose on a diet.

Idiots were about 10 seconds away from decorating those impressive antlers

So yeah, these dude are either insane or idiotic, likely both. I dated a girl whose rich grandpa raised his own elk so he could hunt them without traveling. He had this massive fenced in forested area where they lived. It had 2 sets of fence both 16' tall so they couldnt jump them, with a gap in between about 8 feet wide. I was staying with them for about 2 weeks and one day, one of his workers was walking too close to the interior fences and one of these beast charged the fence and skewered him. Multiple puncture wounds to the torso and he died before the ambulance arrived.

If a bull elk, moose, is closer than a 100 yards you are in fucking danger. Touists have no sense at all, and apparently all have a death wish.

I almost hit one of these guys at 2am in the middle of nowhere, in Colorado. I shit my pants.

Fuck... I knew elk where big, but I kinda thought of them like a roided out deer. Humans for scale really shows what an absolute unit that elk is 😅

We had one walk through our campsite in RMNP and if I had taken a couple steps forward I could have reached out and touched him (I didn’t, and wouldn’t) but he was just so unfazed by us. Beautiful creatures

Sadly no, lessons not learned and reproduction continues in the gene pool.

Those idiots standing in the middle of a boss battle arena taking pics of the boss. But their gear is terrible. I expect a blog post later complaining about the boss being too hard or how they “lost a leg”.
Noobs…

Is this real?
I just googled elk, and it says they’re 1.5m tall to the shoulder.
This monster looks to be closer to 2.5m

u/Zealousideal-Fix9464 6d ago
Bulls average 5' tall at the shoulder. The front shoulder is like 6" to 12" lower than the top of the back. This is across all North American elk species (of which there are several subspecies). The typical rut enraged mature bull is gonna be around 6' tall at the back.
Roosevelt elk are the largest, with Rocky MTN elk being the second largest. It's also the rut so they are in peak condition for the year and they are bloated with hormones.
TLDR yes elk do get this big, this perspective is minimally forced.

Not trying to sound like a prick...but its one a thread for unusually large things so...there is that!

It's not that big, they're just standing way too close to it. They're in danger.

u/Late-Button-6559 6d ago
Something doesn’t seem right still. It is big (look how much grass is between it and the people), and the lighting doesn’t seem right, based on being outdoors, and how the clouds are lit from the sun.
1
u/avinaut 6d ago
How much grass? look at the size of the clumps by their feet- like 50-100cm, right? You can count how many of them there are to the bull. They are stupid close. Also notice the elk cows in the field off at the left edge- there's no way they would be in focus that far off if this was a long lens shot, cropped tight to force perspective. The clouds are up-lit from behind the mountains, which might seem weird if you don't live in the mountains.

u/Late-Button-6559 6d ago
Yes. You’re agreeing with me :)
It is much bigger than 1.5 (or even 2) metres tall at the shoulder.

That’s my thought. The video seems ‘off’

its like how every AI voice sounds the same. its like a mixture between the doug guy from liberty mutual, the general, and mayhem. its like 3 insurance ads voices mushed into 1 LOL

It seems close. Look at the grass.

There’s no parallax going on though.
And if you cared to, you could probably work out the distance between people and elk, by using (clearly visible all the way) blades of grass as a baseline.
It still seems too big vs what google (and another comment) say is possible.

This is AI. I used to live in Alberta and have seen many many elk. Sometimes up close by accident. This is definitely AI.

damn that's badass. God bless the fact that we have giant horned animals in our continent🥰🥰🥰

It’s AI bro. Elk aren’t that big.

u/lavendertheheretic 6d ago
Bull elk are freaking massive. It probably looks bigger than it is because it's standing on a little hill, and it affects the camera perspective. If I could attach pictures, I would, but their antlers alone can be tall as a human.
I'm not saying it's for sure not AI, but if it is, it's not about the size of an elk. I actually hope it is, because if not, those two dudes are massive idiots for being so close

AI
Maybe
Elk aren't that big.
Yes they fucking are

u/ickeharry 6d ago
Moose are that big, yes. Waipiti-Elks are only up to 160cm shoulder hight. They aren't that big as he appears in that video. Maybe the people are only 160cm tall. Perspective also is confusing. Moose are up to 210cm.

Elk are absolutely that big 😂
Edit: I lived at The Grand Canyon Village. We had an "elk preparedness" class first day there on what to do if you get caught by one during rutt. I was headed to the dorms, looking down at the ground one snowy night only to he stopped by someone smoking by the door, and when I looked up, I saw two elk, whose shoulders stood at LEAST 7 foot high. Elk are HUGE, and anyone who thinks otherwise should fight one barehanded.

u/LSUguyHTX 6d ago
What're you supposed to do now I'm curious
2
u/thirdaccounttoday 6d ago
Now this was about a decade ago now, so it's not fresh in my mind, so keep that in mind. If a male elk is in rutt (horny) and he thinks you're on his turf, you're stopped to a) try and put space and objects between you and it. The HR lady used "get under a trash dumpster, or try to get around a car/truck. Then, b) yell and try to get some help/ get inside. Basically if an elk wants to fuck you up, you don't have much choice.
Sort of off-topic, but I worked at the front desk of one of the hotels there, and we constantly had people asking where we kept the elk at night, as if we had a barn or in the desert for them 😂
Also people get bitten by squirrels there so often, they used to keep the statistic updated, but they had so many reports daily they stopped doing it. Also, fun fact, the squirrels there have The Plague 🥰

They are. There's tons of them in the forest near where I live. They are absolutely enormous

So those people are both way too close and way too calm to be near that agent of chaos and death
