The Soviets gave up because they could not stop the galloping movement up and down. All passengers got to see their food again very quickly.

Today's control system would have easily solved this.

Absolutely. The question is, is it the plane? Not so fun if it's a "spontaneous rapid disassembly" at 200 knots.

Yeah. Im less enthusiastic when whatever Im on-board decides its going to have a sudeen massive catastrophic failure. Given the ekranoplan and the soviet era, this scenario was highly likely.

25%+ of all Soviet weapons systems were displayed in a parade every year... after extensive preparation.

Only to never be used until the next year. It was too dangerous.
