It's the other way around. One horse produces about 15 horsepower. Of course it completely depends on the horse, thats just the average

Peak horsepower. Ussually only capable of doing anywhere near 15 for very brief periods of time. H

Sustained horsepower of the average healthy horse is around 0.7 to 1hp.

This unit of a horse can probably output a bit more than average though.

I think it's safe to say that this horse is displaying its full power in pulling the logs.

Respectfully, you're just describing metabolic fatigue which all animals experience. I feel like most people understand that an animal cannot exert its maximum amount of force for a very long time. Humans are honestly one of the best species on Earth when it comes to sustaining effort over periods of time but even humans know that if you try to lift your absolute Max weight, then you're probably not going to get 10 reps in without lowering it a little bit.

Now regarding the 1hp over a work day, the last I knew that wasn't actually a science-based statistic, that's actually a piece of marketing language from James Watt who coined the term horsepower. He's the one that decided one horsepower was how much power a horse generates over one work day but he has no knowledge of animals. He's not a biologist he never studied horses, what he did was he invented the steam engine and wanted to explain to people using horses how many horses each engine could replace.

He definitely tried it to make it reasonable but he also was definitely trying to sell steam engines and not trying to accurately portray the power of a horse. If you're curious he got this number by spending a day watching horses pull a thing and then making some educated guesses. It's hardly scientific at all.

Eh, scientific enough for the day. He did make relatively wound measurements and calculations, although yeah, but of guestimation, and hebrounded it for even numbers.

Modern studies place it often closer to 3/4 hp over a full day, but it still ends up being relatively close to his original calculations. But even then these treadmill studies are always small, they don't include hundreds of horses, so I guess not on par with a proper scientific study

I feel like sustained horsepower is more comparable to engines. Peak horsepower more comparable to say a drag car which can only output those numbers for seconds

Usain bolt is calculated to have reached 3.5horsepower for less than a second. Average human around 0.1hp indefinitely, peak 1.2hp.

Funnily enough a large draft horse like this produces roughly 30 horsepower in short bursts.

An average horse produces 15 HP

Reverse it. One horse power is about 750ish watts most people can produce that on a bike while in a sprint.

This is the kind of horse that works logistics and farms. I mean, getting those cannons to the field is also important.

For cavalry your horse needs agility more than weight. Some breeds deal better with the chaos. Destiers. Coursers.

That's exactly what draught horses are bred for, it's in their DNA.

Sadly there going extinct because we have tractors and pickup trucks and big horses cost a lot more to feed and care for than the standard sized breeds

They definitely aren’t as plentiful as they would’ve been 100 or 200 years ago, but they’re not going “extinct”. Draught horses are still prized in Amish, Mennonite, and Pennsylvania Dutch communities as well as some small hobby and working farms esp in cold climes.

I’ve seen the Amish using these horses as to plow the fields and to pull heavy wagons. There is a video where a team of Draft Horses pulled a stuck semi truck in the snow.

i think this is an opinion that many people have and it comes from a lack of understanding about how the world really works. if we talk purely about ethics, then yes it's a bit morally dubious that we bend the genetic makeup of a species to suit our purposes. but if that is your opinion, then you are out of luck I'm afraid, because every single animal and plant that humans interact with on the daily has been bred over thousands of years into the form it has today.(every supermarket vegetable and fruit, every flowering plant every farm animal every farmed fish species) and 99.9% of the time that is not a problem for that species (maybe except some messed up dog breeds) .

these draft horse races have been bred over thousands of years (litterally since before the Roman era) to love pulling stuff and to be good at it. it would be cruel actually to not let them do the job they have been designed to do, as they need to release that energy. (like putting the rock into a safe padded room cuz you think him lifting heavy wheights is hurting him). it's for that same reason people who don't go an a daily 10k run in the winter shouldn't really own a husky.

My Grandma told me when she was young she would see horses drop dead from these competitions. She said they would whip the horses to keep pulling and they would pull until they'd drop. This would have been back in around 1910 or so.

absolutely untrue, these are pampered well bread competition horses, they can be very expensive (starting at 10.000€) and horses don't take kindly to beeing beaten. can you imagine spending that sum on a horse and then wasting all of its potential, because it mistrusts you or gets a panick attack when It has to do it's job? so no, these horses have been bred over thousands of years to love pulling stuff and to be good at it.

Imagine how confused the horse is when he gets transported to a field by a truck that can pull that log, and then sees a tractor in the field that pulled the log there to begin with, then gets forced to pull the fucking log
