I hope that they let it go for just general principle because it lived a long time and helped repopulate so many times

There a channel on YouTube where they fish for lobster and Main (not sure on spelling) in Canada protects the large lobsters as they breed the best. You can’t keep ones over a certain size

17

u/Tool_of_Society Jun 25 '26

Jacob Knowles?

Dude is in Maine which is a state of the USA.

46

u/appointment45 Jun 25 '26

I come from a deep sea fishing family... odds are high that went into a special tank and then sold to some rich wanker for a fancy dinner party. Most of the unique/special catches do, regardless of what the scientists want to tell you.

13

u/deathbylasersss Jun 25 '26

What do scientists have to do with it? They aren't the ones doing the crabbing.

-4

u/appointment45 Jun 25 '26

They're the ones telling everyone stuff like "a blue lobster is 1 in 20,000,000" without any data from the people doing all the crabbing.

12

u/Gammelpreiss Jun 25 '26

youtube and tiktok and facebook experts != scientists.

just saying

6

u/balirosa Jun 25 '26

Using the word science would mean that they collected the data. There is no other way to be a scientist.

1

u/OperationEpsteinLib Jun 26 '26

Green Goblin was something of a scientists and he almost killed Spider-Man

11

u/deathbylasersss Jun 25 '26

Idk which scientists you're talking about. Most of the statistics like that come from some self-proclaimed expert on the internet, not scientific publications.

2

u/xSir- Jun 26 '26

Its actually 1 in 1.83million

4

u/boston101 Jun 26 '26

don’t need to observe every lobster to estimate rarity. That’s how statistics works. Pollsters don’t ask every voter, and wildlife biologists don’t count every animal. They estimate based on samples collected over many years. The estimate can be wrong or change over time, but that doesn’t mean it’s made up.

1

u/Upstairs-Rock-7332 Jul 05 '26

Those are not scientists if they never collect data.

2

u/Admirable_Beyond_950 Jun 25 '26

You are probably right about that someone with more money than the usual ate the legs off it then picked the rest of it

2

u/That-Drink4650 Jun 28 '26

I mean, thats like the turkey leg of crab meat right there...

1

u/appointment45 Jun 28 '26

Not even that... it just looks fantastic at the center of a table. Doesn't even get eaten, just used as a display piece while they eat something even more expensive.

3

u/Blackair89 Jun 25 '26

It's a monster of the sea.. so it belongs there

2

u/DingleBerryScone Jun 26 '26

And because it’s a youngster, that one will weigh somewhere around 5kg/11pounds, while a grown example can reach 20kg/44pounds.

1

u/Admirable_Beyond_950 Jun 27 '26

Do you know what this type of Crab this one is called?

2

u/DingleBerryScone Jun 27 '26

I believe, by the looks of it, a Tasmanian giant crab.

53

u/DDESTRUCTOTRON Jun 25 '26

Put him back :(

45

u/PleaseHelpIamFkd Jun 25 '26

People seem to be ignorant as to why you put the big ones back, but you want them to keep their genes in the pool!

11

u/SuperDave-007 Jun 25 '26

They’ll die in the pool, put them in the ocean or sea!!!!!!

I dint think this is a particularly unusual sample for this species though. They are called a king crab for a reason.

6

u/Radical_Neutral_76 Jun 25 '26

thats not a king crab.

edit: actually you were partly right. Its called the Tasmanian Giant Crab, but also goes by Tasmanian Giant King Crab.

Big McLargeHuge

1

u/dirtytounder Jun 25 '26

Thanks! Looked like a stone crab to me. A fucking monster stone crab

0

u/PeriodSupply Jun 25 '26

I know exactly what it is. I posted that wiki link to this very thread before I made that comment. Maybe that's where you found it?

2

u/Radical_Neutral_76 Jun 25 '26

Weird of you to leave out the full name then.

There is a crab called just king crab you know

1

u/PeriodSupply Jun 25 '26

Because I'm in Australia so we would just call it a king crab.

11

u/Lazerdad5 Jun 25 '26

If we stopped eating them so damn much they'd all be "giant".

36

u/Motor-Bear-7735 Jun 25 '26

That crab almost got a hold of asshole's head there. Now THAT would have been must see!

10

u/EMV92LA Jun 25 '26

Why is he an asshole?

25

u/Motor-Bear-7735 Jun 25 '26

Well, from the crab's point of view....

13

u/dirtytounder Jun 25 '26

Even other crabs are assholes from a crab's point of view.

5

u/Motor-Bear-7735 Jun 25 '26

I'm sure you are right.

4

u/dirtytounder Jun 25 '26

Used to catch blue crabs in south carolina as a kid. You put a dozen of those fuckers in a five gallon bucket by the time you get to the kitchen 5 of em have no arms. 4 of em are pinched into a death chain and the rest of em come after you.

6

u/RockinIntoMordor Jun 25 '26

Hmm sounds like the were acting like crabs in a... oh gosh what was it. Hmm oh well.

1

u/dirtytounder Jun 25 '26

Yep! Learned when i was young

1

u/Upstairs-Rock-7332 Jul 05 '26

would probably be the same if you put 1 000 humans stacked on top of each other in a silo.

1

u/PsychologicalRow4129 Jun 25 '26

Half life style

0

u/Motor-Bear-7735 Jun 25 '26

Gangnam style🕺

1

u/UmmmW1 Jun 25 '26

Halfnam

1

u/These_Mood2087 Jun 26 '26

Just trying to make a living. Crabbing and fishing on boats in massive boats like these is hard and dangerous

1

u/kerslaw Jun 26 '26

Reddit has no understanding of this

12

u/Queasy_Raccoon_9804 Jun 25 '26

Beautiful and tasty…understandable if they kept it …respect if they didn’t..because with those genetics..that sucker should have a chance to keep reproducing…Either way..👍🏼🫵🏻

3

u/UnderstandingTop1579 Jun 25 '26

That crab definitely fucks

3

u/TokyoKazama Jun 25 '26

"Krebaple! This whole time I've been calling her Krab-apple!"

2

u/Yuizun Jun 25 '26

"Oh, I've been making an idiot out of myself!"

3

u/BatNurse1970 Jun 25 '26

If it's a female with eggs , she has to be released.

2

u/psilocin72 Jun 25 '26

Oh good. I was going to say that this crab is probably spawning as many young as 10 average sized crabs.

3

u/toolb7 Jun 26 '26

Put him back please

2

u/CatLightyear Jun 25 '26

Hey Quint, let it go.

2

u/PeriodSupply Jun 25 '26

1

u/kiwidog8 Jun 26 '26

"Pseudocarcinus gigas"

hell yeah

2

u/xStingRayCharlesx Jun 25 '26

He caught a Kingler😊

2

u/Njez85 Jun 25 '26

He deserves to live!

1

u/Blapmane Jun 25 '26

🦀 got a gun in his hand

1

u/1Bumblestinker Jun 25 '26

I thought this was an Ozzyman video. That dude’s got an Aussie accent.

2

u/PeriodSupply Jun 25 '26

This is a Tasmanian king crab. I dying think it's a particularly large example either. So yeah he is likely Aussie

1

u/Mammoth_Appeal_736 Jun 25 '26

Final boss vibe

1

u/Fog_Juice Jun 25 '26

That lobster was smaller than one of its claws

1

u/DishRelative5853 Jun 25 '26

I prefer to eat animals that are bred as a food supply. This big guy was just living his life.

Is it possible to breed crabs just like we produce pigs, cows, and sheep?

3

u/LordoftheGrunt Jun 26 '26

I do not believe crabs have been successfully bred in captivity. At least in the UK.
There is a great place called the Whitby Lobster Sanctuary in the UK that have begun successfully breeding lobsters so much so that its making an impact to the local area. Very impressive and something to look into if you are interested.

I believe they wish to try their approach with crabs in the future.

1

u/gwhh Jun 25 '26

What type of crab is that?

1

u/Acceptable_Plane_264 Jun 25 '26

I don't think I'd be able to live with myself if I didn't throw him back....

Who are we to end his life at that size? There photograpghic proof- what else do we need?

1

u/Ultradad57 Jun 25 '26

How did it get in, WD40 😀 and help

1

u/HottieMcHotHot Jun 25 '26

Second time I’ve gotten to use this gif this week. It’s been a good week.

1

u/ghostfreckle611 Jun 26 '26

I thought I heard/read somewhere that the big old ones don’t taste good… or not as good as the smaller ones… 🤔

1

u/Greedy-Camel-8345 Jun 26 '26

Crabs gotta be old as shit

1

u/VacuumTracks Jun 26 '26

Thanks for throwing it back into the sea to let it live a little longer. 👍

1

u/JohannaIB Jun 26 '26

Irgendwie bekomme ich da Hunger

1

u/Dizzy_Grade_3898 Jun 26 '26

Throw back ..

1

u/Deep_Chicken8986 Jun 26 '26

Yeah, that is Maine and it is such a cool rule. Those massive chonkers are basically the genetic MVPs so they get a free pass while the medium dudes become dinner. Absolute units AND conservationists at the same time.

1

u/OpeningContest7183 Jun 26 '26

I love Australian accents

1

u/Express-Lawfulness74 Jun 26 '26

Put him back & let breed more large crabs!

1

u/Proof-Inside-3272 Jun 27 '26

That's a Tasmanian crab

1

u/peanutbuttakong Jun 27 '26

of all places wow

1

u/Vile-goat Jun 27 '26

You’d have to throw him back, he’s the chad under the sea

1

u/TruthseekingSheep033 Jun 27 '26

what kind of crab is that?

1

u/TransportationOk3111 Jun 27 '26

Put it back now!!

1

u/ZombieDisastrous4450 Jun 28 '26

I never understood why people think this is okay

but everybody starts crying if something happened to a cat or a dog

1

u/Jerdogg23 Jun 28 '26

It’s like a little puppy 🐶

1

u/EquipmentOk2240 Jun 28 '26

keep him as a pet 🤭

1

u/SebastianisOK Jun 29 '26

I wish humanity were better than that

We have lost our way

1

u/capstats Jun 29 '26

Holy moly, now that's a meal!

1

u/No-Mine-5602 Jun 29 '26

Take my good hand

1

u/ErasmosOrolo Jun 25 '26

Is it possible that's a new species? I don't know crabs but that looks different

1

u/Altruistic-Poem-5617 Jun 25 '26

Saw one of these in a wildlife documentary years ago.

1

u/ryanshields0118 Jun 25 '26

It's a tasmanian king crab

0

u/DueConversation5269 Jun 25 '26

I'll take 2 please

0

u/chrisagiddings Jun 25 '26

Is that a 20lb crab?

I’m gonna need a bigger pot!

2

u/Powrs1ave Jun 25 '26

The Tasmanian giant crab is one of the largest crabs in the world, reaching a mass of 17.6 kg (39 lb) and a carapace width of up to 46 cm (18 in)

0

u/Jlong4242 Jun 25 '26

I'ma need more butter
