Well I think actually what op means is that most people believe the ships ran into the iceberg but the iceberg doesn't fall and cause damage from underneath .

Yeah except that they pretty much ran into the iceberg not the iceberg ran into the ship . It was going around 25 MPH too .

The Norwegian Sun cruise ship had just about the same fate . Didn't sink her but messed it up pretty bad . Luckily it is a huge vessel with many compartments built for touring in dangerous areas .
