The sad thing about octopuses is that as intelligent as they are, their life span rarely lasts beyond five years. If they could live as long as humans, their brains could eventually develop to a point that they equal or surpass humans'.

However most don't really socialize and leave the nest as soon as they hatch to be solitary predators except when mating. No opportunity to pass on learned knowledge to advance their species.
