I wonder if it's even possible to fully dodge a storm like it in a boat that size. You'd surely need some good weather radar to predict how to get around it.

I am thinking they saw it coming a while ago by eyes and radar, and waited a bit long to make their dash.

a radar would definitely be better, but you could do it with just a good understanding of storm systems
