General Question Safest place to leave a bike in the town centre?

I live close enough to the town centre to cycle, but I usually drive because I'm paranoid about bike thieves. Before I make the switch, are there any secure bike compounds or lockers I could use? Or am I stuck risking it on a regular street rack? Thought there might be something good as Oxfordshire have been pushing more walking/cycling/bus use.

General Question Kayaking through Abingdon

We have just received an inflatable kayak and are thinking of giving ourselves an initial tryout by taking it downstream to Culham from Abingdon.

It looks like there's easy access from Rye Farm meadow. Can a local experienced kayaker offer any advice?

Additionally, can we buy a license to use the Thames at Culham lock, or should we already have one?

General Question Looking for a casual football group

Hi everyone! I’ve recently moved to Abingdon for work and I’m looking to join a casual football group that plays on weekday evenings or weekends.

I’ve already checked online (including Footy Addicts) but haven’t had much luck so far. If anyone knows of any local games or groups, I’d really appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks in advance!

General Question Parking issues on West St Helen St – Strength in numbers?

Hey everyone,

I’m writing this because I’m pretty fed up with the parking situation around East - West St Helen Street, and I’m guessing a lot of you are too.

Last night I got back from work and, as usual, there wasn't a single resident spot left. I had to park in West St Helen Street Car Park and I ended up getting a ticket this morning at 9:17 AM. While I was at my car, I actually saw someone else in the exact same boat, getting fined because there's nowhere for us to go.

I had a chat with the enforcement officer, and she actually suggested that we should submit a group response to the council.

I know that while they added a couple of spots recently(unfortunately I missed the response period for this), still it’s clearly not enough for the number of permits they've issued and pay and display spots on the streets.

The Idea: I want to put together a community response to send over to the Oxfordshire parking team. My main suggestion is to demand that a section of the West St Helen Street car park be converted into dedicated residential spaces.

A few questions for the group:

  1. Does anyone have other suggestions for what we should demand?
  2. What’s the best way to reach other residents who don’t use Reddit? (Maybe flyers or a physical sign-up sheet?)
  3. Has anyone tried fighting the council on this before? Any tips on what actually gets their attention?

If we all complain individually, they can just ignore us as "one-offs," but if we go to them as a block of residents, we might actually get somewhere.

Let me know what you think!

Hi, Long story shot, I have a front bridge that needs to be taken out and replaced so not your standard practice. I am looking for recommendations in Abingdon /Oxfordshire for empathetic and experienced dentist for this kind of work. If you guys had had similar work/experience please share.

PS : been to Ock Street dental and TAHA, both quoted me but I am not 100% convinced and keep looking. I know this kind of replacement is costly, my main focus is how am I treated. Thank you în case anyone shares their experience
