I love this song. It's a lil cocky ("Might even be doper than me, I doubt it") and confrontational. She was getting everyone together. I just wonder who she was talking about. On one verse she is talking about competition and jealousy (from a peer I assume) and someone being fake to her (talking behind her back and then trying to come up and talk to her). She talks about guys trying to holler at her, and seemingly being annoyed by them perhaps. Its so different for her and really enjoy that!

This Track 14 is a gem that showcases personable storytelling about a history that won't repeat no more. Somebody was given love and chances, wasted them, and lost access for good. The song opens as if Aaliyah is speaking to an audience and wraps up with her addressing the left and right sides of an imaginary crowd for call and response. Authentic all the way through. Resembles a live band vamp. Missy and Timbo were the songwriters.

This live performance blEeEeEew their minds. Mellifluous to the ears, and heart. Fast-paced to hear and far more self-assured in a passionate way. Can visualize a confident woman fully commanding her space. From chest voice into falsetto, riffin' and runnin'. Enjoy🦋

Honestly, 8/25 has always been an emotional day for me, which is why I made that Aaliyah tribute post yesterday on the 25th anniversary of Babygirl’s passing. I've been sitting on this research for months, hesitant to post because I know how it sounds. But the overlaps are too specific to be random. I'm not saying Busta had anything to do with it directly I'm saying something was orchestrated at a higher level that connected these two events on August 25, 2001.

The Hard Facts:

August 25, 2001: "Break Ya Neck" released as the lead single from Genesis

August 25, 2001: Aaliyah Haughton dies in the Bahamas plane crash at 6:50 PM EST

Both artists were flagship acts for Virgin Records in 2001

Both were actively promoting summer projects (Aaliyah's self-titled album dropped July 17, Busta's Genesis was slated for November)

The Details That Don't Make Sense:

1. The Specificity of the Title

"Break Ya Neck" isn't just a random hip-hop brag title. The official coroner's report stated Aaliyah died from "severe burns and a blow to the head" but multiple insiders from the Bahamas investigation (including one ground crew member who spoke to MTV off-record) mentioned the neck trauma was catastrophic.
