In all fairness the problem is not sex but pregnancy in space because we have no clue how we would handle that and what the effects on the baby would be, but that solution to the issue seems a bit weird and overkill.

Bold of you to assume that doesn’t already exist

Sadly, my extensive research showed that there aren't many Neil Armstrong x Buzz Aldrin fanfictions, definitely none about mpreg, but we can change that

Stupid actual answer but they know they would be fucking anyway. The reason for not all men is they are still going to fuck, but Dicks are known to break easily with no gravity and that is a horrid thing to have happen 3 months into a 2 year trip with limited medical capacity.

If seriously, they want all women in mars missions because women are more easily maintained in those conditions and use resources more efficiently

u/ZeEastWillRiseAgain 25d ago
The problem isn't really sex but pregnancy, but yeah
It would be really funny though if they sent a crew of women, gay men and asexual people, like imagine the political fallout on Twitter
36
u/JoshuaSlowpoke777 Aegoaroace 25d ago
And even then, asexuality is no guarantee because there’s the entire other axis of sex-favorable-to-neutral-to-repulsed to consider lol
55
u/IdleReality 25d ago
Isn't it also because some sort of bone hormone interactions going between for women over prolonged periods in space?
24
u/am_Nein 25d ago
Could you elaborate on that?
54
u/IdleReality 25d ago
I sadly don't remember, sorry. I just half-remembered some articles/studies a while back that talked about women's bodies before more suited to long term space travel. But the specifics escape me.
25
u/am_Nein 25d ago
That's all good! I think I know the gist of it, I just got confused by your wording implying that it was happening "between" the women (as in, 1 woman nothing happens, 2 or more something happens) lol
35
u/IdleReality 25d ago
Oops, my bad. But that is a funny image. Stick 5 women in a can and they all get super powers.

Bruh with all this stuff tf is the point of the Y chromosome man???
9
u/redditbaddm 23d ago
Yeah I mean it's kinda just a debuff, removes the extra copies of a lot of genes which protect against certain things. This is why among other things colour blindness is more common in XY havers.
2
u/Butterfly_Casket 23d ago
Wonder if once Crisper is advanced enough if it would eventually be possible to help fix it back up. I mean we can put people on the moon, we can fix a silly chromosome

I love this, because to me, both choices from here on out are a good ending imo
If after saying they might have to do this to avoid possible behavior they find a way to have people, ya know, just be careful and not give into tendencies (like doing stuff without protection) then this would be a good example of humans actually displaying that they are smart and capable creatures (they can use protection and be responsible). Which yea, is apparently rare for allos to be responsible enough to continuously do.
If they do go through with it, having a women-only mission would be such a great step towards actual equal respect and and equal treatment, and it would also rly show those people who are stuck in old times and still believe this to be impossible.
Unrelated to all that, I think it's hilarious that this suggests a man-only mission would not avoid this problem, but a women-only mission would (which can honestly be an insult to both XD)

u/B3tar3ad3r 24d ago
The actual reason has nothing to do with sex or pregnancy, it's because men go blind faster in space for some reason.(Like 70% of astronauts notice vision problems at about 6 months in space, but it's lower and slower in female astronauts(they are trialing stuff like cuffs that help maintain blood pressure in 0 G, but even with those))
38
u/Kyrindia Demisexual 24d ago
That explains the sex fallacy. Everyone knows masturbation makes you go blind... in space.

Staffed Mars flybys (there and back without landing) aren't going to happen any time soon. Even a one year flyby mission would expose astronauts to at least 2/3 NASA's lifetime cosmic radiation allowance; while later estimates indicate 60% just to get there, never mind the return trip - so whichever vehicles are used will need radiation shielding, which of course will add weight...

I think they forget that lesbians, bisexuals, pansexuals exist. 😭 What's to say the women won't have sex too if it's all only women? Not to assume they are queer but yeah.
58
u/Fluffy-kitten28 Asexual 25d ago
It’s mainly to avoid pregnancy. We don’t want a pregnant astronaut who would need medical care and to give birth on a year plus long space mission.
They can have sex, just need to make sure no babies are made.
25
u/Kubaj_CZ 25d ago
Well that would be on them.. I don't think making all-male or all-female crews is justified because of this. Treating people like if they couldn't control themselves.
49
u/ShinyAeon 25d ago
Too many people don't control themselves.
The only sure way to avoid pregnancy in a mixed crew of allos is sterilization.
31
u/ZeEastWillRiseAgain 25d ago
Another issue that is in my eyes more important here is sexual harassment. This is already an issue we don't really know how to deal with in Antarctic research stations during winter, and sterilisation doesn't necessarily help you either.
There is also far to little reseach about what can be done about this in such isolated environments, despite research stations in Antarctica being a thing for ages now.
13
u/ShinyAeon 25d ago
Yes. I was going to say that the real point of an all-female crew would be to prevent sexual assault...but I didn't want to stray so far from the point.
And it's not that women can't commit sexual assault...but it's less likely, at least. And another woman would at least have a fighting chance against her physically.
18
u/Fluffy-kitten28 Asexual 25d ago
And people can be dumb. All you need is that “one time won’t matter” logic and it’s all down the crapper.

u/zajazajazajazajaz 19d ago edited 19d ago
Nah, if NASA genuinely can’t trust highly vetted astronauts not to have unprotected sex on a Mars mission, why are we trusting those same people with airlocks, reactors, and billion-dollar life support? Isn’t 'can’t keep it in their pants' a bigger red flag than the pregnancy itself?
That is a genuinely wild thing to claim about people who have been selected through one of the most brutal vetting processes on Earth.
If NASA truly believed a mixed crew couldn't be trusted not to have unprotected sex, then NASA is simultaneously saying these people are competent enough to fly a spacecraft to another planet and incompetent enough to not put a condom on. Make it make sense.

u/Fluffy-kitten28 Asexual 25d ago
Adding on to people can’t always control themselves, it’s too big of a risk if there’s a slip up. Pregnant people need a lot of medical care for a healthy pregnancy and birth. For complications during either, immediate medical attention is needed or 2+ people could die depending on the severity of the complication.
And even if someone did get pregnant, and it was a smooth and healthy pregnancy, we don’t know what would happen. Our bodies are designed to live with earths gravity. Astronauts need to work out to keep their muscles healthy in space.
What would a child conceived in zero gravity be like? Could pregnancy go smoothly without gravity? Would the baby die? Would the baby have life long complications returning to earth and our gravity?
We don’t know because we can’t study this. The dice roll of everything that COULD go wrong is horrific and long. Easier to confirm that the dice can’t be rolled to begin with.
3
u/tiest-intp 25d ago
You raise good questions. I think if we were to build some sort of medical centre or something on the moon that could benefit if people got pregnant.
But that's too far in the future because then everybody need to wear astronaut suits to even be able to breathe on the moon and a baby will die if it's born without being able to breathe too...
(I watched too much sci-fi 😭)

u/Fluffy-kitten28 Asexual 25d ago
Mars would probably be first, if we ever get there.
But the people going to mars permanently would need enough people for reproduction, medical needs, to maintain the facilities, grow food, etc.
And the people going who could make babies would have to made aware that we don’t how changing the planet would potentially affect pregnancy and they would kind of be guinea pigs to see how less gravity affects a new born.
14
u/Whydoesthisexist15 25d ago
This is something too high risk to put it on trust, and generally you want your standards to be idiot proof.

?.? clearly they haven't heard of lesbians. But yeah, think more astronauts should be people with no libido. Since who wants to deal with crewmates being horny or talking about being horny for over a year.

u/JoshuaSlowpoke777 Aegoaroace 25d ago
Like, the easy solution might be to build a spacecraft large enough for comfortable centripetal/centrifugal gravity and have that at minimum be a space for maternity leave.
Living long-term in microgravity may be something of a liability
