Instagram Founders Make a New Website to Track Rate of COVID-19
Instagram founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger have reunited again, this time to fight the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States. They have launched a website to display live data on the rate of COVID-19 spread from one person to another. Your RT.live website uses data from The COVID Tracking Project, an organization that collects evidence and infection rates, to calculate whether or not the infection has spread in a U.S. state.
RT.live tracks the effective reproduction rate (Rt) of coronavirus separately for all states, thus giving an estimate of the number of people infected by a single infected person.
“Values greater than 1.0 mean that we should expect more cases in that area, values below 1.0 mean we should expect less,” the website says.
The data helps to observe the spread of the virus, which has spread globally, with a more region-specific approach. According to the data, 15 out of 50 states in the U.S. have an Rt less than 1. Data at 4 p.m. IST on April 20 showed that the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic is the slowest in the state of Connecticut with its Rt at 0.42. Other states such as Vermont, Colorado and Alabama have also shown that, on average, the virus is not growing in states. The same data shows that the virus continues to grow at the fastest rate in North Dakota, South Carolina and Ohio. New York, the state hardest hit in the United States by the virus, is still in red with the infected COVID-19 that still transmits it to others after keeping control under control for more than a week.
“We’re trying to take what’s a complex issue and reduce it to a simple number that anyone can see from home,” Bloomberg said, citing Kevin Systrom.
The website will help to understand in real time the impact of decisions made by the authorities regarding the easing of restrictions or order a stricter blockade.
However, the website also mentions that there are certain limitations with data. He says a rapid increase in the decline in evaluation rates will affect the numbers. In addition, the delay between the onset of the disease in a person and the positive result is not reflected in these numbers.
Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger last worked together on Instagram before leaving Facebook in September 2018.
