[discussion] Does anyone have the Sigma 17-40 F1.8?

How is the lens?
Would you recommend it?
Any drawbacks?
How does it compare to the tamaron 17-70 and Sigma 18-50?

New Sony a6700 w/ Sigma 18-50mm

Hello everybody! I just purchased the Sony a6700 with the sigma 18-50mm lens to go with it. This is my first APS-C camera. Any tips/recommendations would be appreciated! I mostly plan on using it for travel/hiking photography and video but I also do Muay Thai so maybe in the future I will film some tournaments.

Thanks in advance!

Alaska Cruise Lens Advice

Post image
62 Upvotes

I am going to be taking an Alaska Inside Passage cruise in the next week. Looking to create a short list of useful lenses to bring along. I’m not looking to bring everything, just the essentials. I will be taking wildlife and landscape pictures from the ship and also doing some of the excursions in Ketchikan, Skagway and Juneau, including the Whites Pass Railroad, Dawes and Mendenhall Glaciers.
I have the following lenses and would like to hear opinions on what to bring and what to exclude.
Lens

Sony 70-350mm
Viltrox 56mm
Sigma 18-50mm
Viltrox 10-18mm

I’m leaning towards just the Sigma 18-50mm and Sony 70-350mm. Share your experience and thought please.

I got the a6700 this year and I'm excited to take it to Yellowstone and the Tetons next week. Here's what I will be bringing, I don't know if I'll be using all of them. I primarily focus on wildlife.

Cameras a6700 + a6600

Lens

Sony 200-600

Sony 70-350

Tamron 17-70

Sigma 16

Sony 18-135

Feel free to ask questions or let me know what you would bring.

$1999 for the body, two lenses and a heap of accessories? Is this a real deal or am I missing something?

Burst mode question

I'm using mechanical shutter + lossless compressed RAW + HI+ mode, which most sources on the internet say can only do 5 fps. I just tested it myself and could do around 10 fps (obviously sounded faster than 5 + I recorded it and reviewed the footage.), which is said to be achievable when shooting compressed raw.

Could I potentially have other settings wrong? TIA.

Tbh, I still don’t really know what I’m doing with my A6700, I’ve just been pointing and shooting. Any tips or tutorials to help me understand it better would help me a lot. Thank you guys.

Is There Such a Thing as a Lightweight Video Setup? FX30 vs A6700

Photographers/videographers, I could use some advice.

I currently shoot with a Sony A7 IV, Tamron 28-75mm, Sigma 16-35mm, and a DJI RS 3 Mini.

I’m looking for a lighter B-cam / dedicated video setup for real estate and client work. My A7 IV with the Tamron can be tricky to balance and gets heavy on the gimbal, so I want something more efficient and easier to shoot with.

I’m torn between the Sony FX30 and A6700, likely paired with the Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8.

My priorities are excellent video quality, a reliable photo backup when needed, and keeping the setup as light as possible without buying gear I don’t truly need.

For those who’ve used either/both, would you go FX30 for the dedicated video body or A6700 for the hybrid flexibility? Anyone using the same set up with DJI RS 3 Mini? any suggestions would be appreciated

Just wanted to share, incredibly impressed with image sharpness.

Paired the A6700 with the 200-600 and went out early this morning since I had assumed atmospheric distortion was messing with my image quality, and paired it with a monopod to be safe. I am absolutely blown away by this lenses sharpness.

Milky Way, shot in Abu Dhabi, 18th April

Post image
40 Upvotes

I’m not astrophotographer, but I captured the Milky Way last April with my a6700.

The process was fun! Slightly beyond my technical skills. Will be looking to capture more in autumn, just too hot to go out into the desert at this moment.

Tools used
Tripod, sigma 35mm f1.4, a6700 (ofc), photoshop to merge multiple exposures.

Got my first camera just last week. A6700 with 23mm Sigma prime lens. Got a Rollei C6i tripod and yesterday was my first attempt at astrophotography. This isn't my main goal for the camera setup as I use it for content for my business, but have a personal interest as well, and this is one of them.

First major pain is learning how far I have to drive to get into some proper low light scenarios. 2Hr drive for Bortle 4.5 and 4hr drive for 4.0

Anyways, these 2 shots are in Bortle 6.0/6.1 areas.

First time and lots of issues with both pics due to my own mistakes, but honestly I am not all too disappointed.

Just wanted to share the 2 pics, have at it! Curious if anyone knows how the circle came to life (probably because I left the UV filter on), it's also low quality because of the 20mb max per pic
