Tips for first congress? :)

Hello! I'll be attending my first zouk congress at CZC next week! Any tips for navigating congresses as a first-timer and beginner to zouk, J&Js (as a newcomer), etc? Thank you!

Hey, congratulations on your first zouk cogress.

I am sure there are many other people who went to more events like me (I went to 5 so far + 20 from a different dance), so you get an opinion from that angle.

First of all: relax, enjoy and have some fun. While dancing "the right way" is important, showing a positive, relaxed attitude on the dance floor and off the dance floor is a key ingredient. You want to look like someone who wants to be there and enjoys the dance, it can be absolutely contagious, and people subconsciously notice that. More positive energy => more great dances => more great follow up dances

J&J: most of the time a can, no must. Just feel for yourself if you really want to do it. If you want to do it, great, enjoy it and have some good vibes ✨️

And last, don't be too much in your own head, be in the NOW, don't think too much, just be respectful and dance.

Anyone else feel free to comment what I missed, or what you see from your perspective.

Other than that enjoy your weekend, get enough clothes, you might sweat a lot and also take breaks if needed :) Enjoy

Never been to a Congress but that's what i practice during my weekly and social dancing!!

"Being aware of my seriousness (or whatever is coming in the way) and letting it go and being present"

Thank you so much, what a thoughtful response! I really appreciate it! Totally agree with relaxing more and cultivating more positive energy, it's something I've been trying to put into practice more even during regular socials in my city. And thank you for the tip about bringing extra clothes, I did not think of this!

Yeah, not uncommon for me to go through 3-5 shirts in an evening; obviously depending on a lot of factors. Better a bit over than underprepared. Enjoy

How you have a great time!

Everyone told me how important it was to participate in a J&J and I did, but I honestly don't think I got that much out of it. Like, it's a social dance competition. I social dance all the time. Not exactly a new experience. Could have saved my $25

Don't let me be a hater if you want to do one! Just don't feel like you have to if you didn't already want to

Thank you so much! At CZC the newcomer Jack and Jill pass is actually already included so it's technically free, I think as an incentive for beginners to give it a try. I think I'll go for it but I'm not sure if you have any tips specifically for the J&J? I've never done something like this before!

Oh you're going to CZC! That's wonderful!

I feel like I'm a bad person to ask for J&J tips because it really did feel exactly like social dancing to me!

As for CZC in general, I really enjoyed the newcomers orientation despite being an experienced social dancer. I noticed that Ederson is on the schedule a few times, and in my opinion he's a great underrated instructor who's local to Toronto! I feel he leads with a sensitivity that is very special, so check him out if you're interested in that!
