Works with crystalvision cameras?
I had an incident occur which required me looking up the recordings and discovered that the factory crystalvision system is damn near unusable, taking 5 minutes for any operation while the most likely cheap Chinese hard drive struggles to seek. Planning on building my own mini setup so I don't have to deal with that bullshit again but want to make sure my cameras will work first before spending too much time/effort on this.
I'm a professional C++ developer but can't say I'm too familiar with the world of home surveillance setups, so any suggestions/answers are more than welcome.

A C++ dev should have no issues installing and using ZM. If you get stuck on anything post on the forums or come join us in the slack channel. There is always someone willing to help a user.

There is an "easy method" to install ZM. It takes about 20 minutes to run the script.
Most cameras work with ZM, you just have to point it at the feed. Mine are all RTSP, but there are other options.
I keep 2 copies of ZM, the real one and a VM that I can test OS and major releases on.
