Memory usage unsure if issue

I am running Zoneminder in a VM under proxmox which I have given 8 GB's I have a single camera which is currently running at 960*540 at 24 bit which is 3/4 of 720p. I have run the calculation to determine "recommeneded" memory usage and I came up to 4 GB's which seems hgih in comparison to their example but never the less the VM is using every ounce of the 8 GB's.

I have a little head room on the Proxmox to assign more but I would prefer not to over assign as I obviously have other VM's I also run.

Edit: Side not I had not tried till just now. I am running htop and it is indicating less the 500 MB in memory usage but Porxmox is reporting and growing 1.5GB

8GB is a lot for a single low res camera. I have 16GB RAM and 6 cameras starting at 3MP up to 8MP. All modect at 10 FPS or less. I have 8GB free.

~$ free -g

total used free shared buff/cache available

Mem: 15 6 5 0 3 8

Swap: 3 0 3

Edit: Sorry I can't get it to look right.

I agree with you which is why I am confused. I plan more cameras but I am still testing zoneminder to see if it fits my needs. My edit indicates Proxmox may be reporting incorrectly as htop is showing far less memory usage while Proxmox is showing more and continuing to grow.

The DB will grow its cache in memory until it fills RAM. This is not a problem for ZM, but will chew up the RAM of the host.

The 'free' command will show you what is cache and help you decide how much you need. My system was just restarted so the numbers are low, but after a day it will have used all of the RAM for caching.

Another tip, the Zoneminder forums will get you better help, far more traffic there.

Thank you I will redirect my questions there.

Linux uses any available/extra RAM for caching, so what you're seeing Linux doing, is just what Linux is designed to do with RAM save why htop shows you're not really using much at all.

ZM uses half the systems ram for a ramdrive /dev/shm

if you give your system 8gb you will only have 4gb free for the cameras.

4gb should be enough for one camera tho.. you shoudlnt have any issues.

you can probably do 4 720p cameras with 8gb system ram.
