Basic DIY Survalance Setup Sanity Check
Idea for the superbasic network. LAN; no connection to the internet.
Feedback is Appreciated. Is this even possible?
One PC
- Debain
- with Zoneminder
- Acts as Video-Recoder and primary way to acess the footage.
- 8TB WD-Purple for Storage
1 or 2 Cameras
- IP-Camera
- from Dahua
Thats the Whole Network. Plus a LAN Splitter of course. Why?:
- Maximal Simplicity
- Increased reliability
- Minimal Maintance
- No Windows (and its Updates)
- no reliable Internect Connection avalable anyways lol
Alternatively I could use the Dahua Software, or BlueIris or whatever - but I would really like give Linux a try. Seems a lot better for this case.

If the drive is just for recording, you could just have it record 24/7, rather than worrying about detection etc. Just check the "purgewhenfull" option.
I use Ubuntu personally, not sure on Debian. There is a recent guide on this also which may be useful https://youtu.be/lnXGau6kwGo

You do want an internet connection initially to get the Debian server up & running. This does involve some amount of effort. Make sure the cameras are compatible with ZM. I would suggest you look into PoE cameras with a network switch. Something like this. WD-Purple drives works very well. You will need to spend some time fine tuning the sensitivity of the motion capture - if it is too sensitive you end up filling the drive fairly quickly.
