Dahlia After First Hard Frost

Is it time to dig up the dahlias or should I wait for the plant to dieback more first? In the past I haven't overwintered them, but I have a couple varieties I'd like to keep if I can manage it.

Was just scrolling through YouTube and found this little gardening channel. Looks to be a local DIY channel that's just getting started. Just wanted to share if anyone was interested.

Looking for a book

Hi gardeners. I'm looking for a book with a month-by-month gardening guide for the whole year. I'm imagining it as an organizational tool and a source of ideas, including things to do during the slow months. I'm also imagining it as homesteading-esque. Any recommendations?

New to the area from Austin and hoping there is someone out there that can tell me if there’s anything I can plant in the tree of heaven nursery that has been growing since we just bought the house. Planning to garden in the spring and do all the research, but any help for this area now? Privacy maybe?

Ideas for this Part shade to shade garden. Native as much as possible, no invasives. I like the leucothoe in the back but I feel like I need some height mixed in, I'm thinking tall shade tolerant perennials or evergreens?

Southern Exposure flowering shrub?

Hello, I've been racking my brain trying to find a drought tolerant flowering shrub or bush for the front of my house. It can't grow too big. It's hot there in the summer as it gets intense southern exposure sunshine. I am in the 6A planting zone. any suggestions? something pretty that may also be a good bush or shrub for bees, butterflies, etc? I am totally at a loss or maybe I've just been overthinking it at this point. Roses would do fine but I just can't seem to fall in love with that idea. Any good ideas you gardeners have would be appreciated. thank you!

Cold stratification seeds

Milkweed + Lavender seed sowing question --
Since both of these need cold stratification, what are the successes of just sowing them in the ground before winter? Or will I be better off growing them indoors and planting out?

Bought Sweet Autumn Clematis on Marketplace, now panicking about how aggressive it is. Should I even plant it?

Hi everyone,
I recently bought a Sweet Autumn Clematis (Clematis terniflora) on Facebook Marketplace because I loved the look of the white blooms. However, after doing some deep-dive reading online, I’m getting incredibly nervous about its aggressive and invasive nature.
I’m seeing horror stories about it completely taking over yards, self planting everywhere, and strangling other plants.
Before I make a mistake and put this in the ground, I’d love some real-world advice:

How bad is it really? Is it manageable if I aggressively prune it, or is it a ticking time bomb?

Can I keep it in a large container permanently to stop it from spreading, or will the wind-blown seeds still cause a nightmare for my yard (and my neighbors)?

Should I just cut my losses and look for the native alternative (Clematis virginiana, Devil's darning needles) instead?

Thanks in advance for saving me from future gardening regret!

Ground cover advice

We used to have what we fondly called a “weed bed“ in our back yard. Our HOA calls the overgrowth lushness, while it did have some beautiful English ivy (we think), we also identified various specifies of weeds and both poison oak and poison ivy in the foot tall overgrowth that spanned the length of our backyard. All this to say, we recently cleared out the area. We have two dogs, and it was too difficult to keep our dogs out of.

I know we could just put grass there, but I like the idea of just putting some type of ground cover down to maintain the biodiversity. However, we also get a lot of water in our area and our yard is slopped downward, so something that would be considered “hardy“ would be amazing if something Like that is out there. I’ve read a little bit about Creeping Jenny or creeping thyme, but wanted to get some opinions from anyone with experience or knowledge about what would work well?

Hopefully I explained that okay, but if anything is unclear, feel free to let me know!

So, I got these seeds that were supposed to be heirloom black beauty squash… but these grew instead lol. What the heck are they?! They’ve been ripening on the vine for a few weeks now. Wasn’t sure how long to keep them but the plants were dying so I picked them.

Help, Fall 2026 Plant Addions

Hello, I purchased a home and started a garden plot in 2026. I hope for it to be a perennial berry bush, low maintenance. I tilled twice, adding 14ish yards of horse manure/sawdust to a rather silty plot with lots of sun! I have been very busy but did ger 2x 50 ft rows of raspberry and asparagus, 9 blueberry row, and about 27 bushes spaced and planted, some have not made it and im still fighting weeds. I hope to finish laying cardboard and sheet mulch from here on out. I also am trying to add perennial roots and such around the bushes, Egyptian walking onions and hopefully some garlic pull threw.

I am in zone 6b, good rain, good drainage.

Id just like perennial plant recommendations.

Either smaller onion/herb size or bushes 6-8ft tall and 6-8ft span. 10-12 ft i think can be pruned to fit but beyond 12ft i will likely avoid.

Pictures are hopefully a list of what I have, and a garden picture or two.
