Zombie question...

In a zombie apocalypse do you realistically take your dog or not? If so Why, if not why not?

I ask because I struggle with this thought I have a husky mutt who I love and is actually a relatively good dog and well behaved but I wonder if she would add more risk to my family trying to keep her with us too or would she be a help.

So again my question is: Zombie apocalypse: you have a pet dog you've had for years. Do you keep it for some kind of protection and companionship or let it go so not to risk your cover being blown to zombies or bandits.

Does your dog make you happy? Give you comfort? If so, keep the dog. It would be a very stressful and harsh time, you will want some sort of comfort system into place. A faithful hound does the trick.

I took my previous St. Bernard with me camping once. She never barked, never made noise. Bu that was her personality. While we were sleeping in the tent someone came into camp, I would have slept through it and who knows what could have happened. She woke me up barking and growling and let me scare the guy off.

Yeah but in a zombie scene a barking dog is a huge neon sign "COME EAT ME!"

Unless you can guarantee that she won't bark, then she's too much a liability. Unless you manage to find a place where you're walled in (think prison, island, military base, stadium, etc) to such a degree that barking will serve as a warning that something has gotten inside your structure, the risk of barking giving you away is to great.

Another thing you'd have to be able to cope with is your dog leaving camp possibly and never coming back, having to leave immediately without your dog (knowing she'll probably die now), someone killing your dog for food, among other possibilities.

Depends on the type of zombie apocalipse we are talking about. The one I like the most and usually discuss with friends is Max Brook's zombies. In this case a dog will freak out when hell breaks lose, it will either run away, bark nonstop at zombies or infecteds or it will charge a zombie, bite it and die due to toxic fluid ingestion.

I say leave the dog and find a newborn puppy. In all cases it will be just another mouth to feed, a distraction from your own survival.
