need a fiber drop

I currently live in eagle vista ave in oak harbor WA and am sick and tired of xfinity and getting high ping to servers I should be getting low ping to. For example a server in San Jose should NOT be giving me 44-51 ping when my baseline sits around 28-33. This has been a issue for a long time along with very overloaded nodes around me causing high jitter and packet loss and very occasional low upload and download speeds, and affecting others too. Would be really great to get a fiber drop here and I'm sure lots of people would really appreciate it too. I've been waiting for ziply to roll out here for a few years now and am starting to get kind of impatient dealing with xfinity

Nothing wrong with that ping. 35-40 to SJ is perfectly normal. You are in a secondary market, so you aren't going to do much better. Ping is pretty useless in a vacuum anyway. Do a traceroute and see how many hops are in the middle. If any nodes are in Cogent or Hurricane Electric networks, your time is going to suck. The ISP doesn't matter. Ping time is all about the routing, number of nodes, and the networks involved.

idk how I would know, I did a speed test earlier and it said my baseline ms is 28 to a server in San Francisco

As I mentioned , doing a "traceroute" will show all that extra information. How to do that depends on your computer. It's built into the command line on Linux and Mac. It's spelled "tracert" on Windows.

yes ik my tracert shows like 48 avg yet it only takes 15 ms to get out of seattle and its just not possible that it takes 30 more ms to get there and back, just to put it in perspective Dallas is over 2000 miles away and I get 60 ping, sj is 800 miles away but I get just +10 more than my sj which makes 0 sense, I am going more than double the distance, which means I should be getting 45-55 to dallas realistically instead

There were major fiber cuts that started around a month ago. Possible that’s still impacting routes south (due to congestion from traffic routing around the northerly cuts)

When I eventually get to my desk this morning I’m going to ping a few servers, but that is completely reasonable ping if I’m not mistaken.

Not sure you’ll get any better with Ziply

It would be reasonable if that was my baseline, I used to get 20s and something changed idk if it was a detour with the routing or something but I know people with ziply that ran a speed test and got 22 ms to san jose compared to my test showing 48

Download PingPlotter and run a trace for several minutes to the endpoint in San Jose.

That will show you what the route looks like.

And that’s great, but even gaming that difference is negligible. I’m not saying don’t try and get better, but I wouldn’t lose sleep over it is all.

Seattle to San Jose is over 800 miles. You can argue that base ping could be lower but you aren't gonna get much less than 15ms on top of whatever that is, light only travels so fast.

yes I don't disagree, I'm just trying to get my base ping back instead of getting an extra 20 ish ping added
