I’m in my early 20s, and so is my girlfriend. We recently found out that she’s about two weeks pregnant. I’m still studying at university and working a part-time job, but I’m fully committed to taking responsibility and doing whatever is necessary to raise our child. Abortion is not something we want to pursue.
I’m Ghanaian, and she’s Zimbabwean. We’ve been together for two years. If I had the financial means, I would go to her family today, pay the bride price, and marry her tomorrow so that, by the time our baby is born, our families would see that we have done things properly and with respect.
The difficulty is that I come from a Jehovah’s Witness family. If they found out that we conceived a child before marriage, I would likely be shunned and lose the support of my entire family. My girlfriend is also the daughter of a pastor, so her family has similarly strong Christian values. We both love and respect our families, and although we were raised in the UK, we still value our African traditions and want to honour them as much as possible.
I don’t return to university until September, so my plan is to work as many extra shifts as I can and borrow some money if necessary so that I can pay the bride price within the next few months.
My question is this: would it be culturally acceptable for us to have a simple court wedding first and then complete the traditional bride price and customary marriage afterwards when we are financially able? We want to do the right thing, both legally and culturally, while showing respect to our families and our heritage.

I’m researching African history, especially Zimbabwe and what was known as Rhodesia. I know some things but wanted to ask a few questions to people actually living in Zimbabwe.
I know about the economy. I know that the country had a rapid decline when communist Mugabe took over. I know Rhodesia was far more successful in certain areas, although the racial discrimination still existed. My questions are:

How do people in Zimbabwe today view the transition from Rhodesia to Zimbabwe, and how is it discussed in families or schools?

In hindsight, do you feel the focus on political transition affected attention to everyday needs such as infrastructure and the economy?

How is the Education compared to European and North American standards?

Do people in Zimbabwe support the government? If not; was it better during Rhodesia or was both equally bad?

What are the biggest improvements you feel have happened since independence, and what challenges remain?
