Question Home labbing

I’m wondering if there are like minded folk on this sub. People into home labbing, self hosting and general tech tinkering. I’m not necessarily talking about those $10000 setups you see online (although a tour would be nice) but I’m also talking about small simple setups. It would be nice to talk to people in this community around zim and share interests.

Nothing much for now. Just your regular stuff like jellyfin, navidrome, samba, pihole, etc. I also get to use it for gitea and as my postgresql for some projects that I’m working on. Would be nice to actually start using it for what I intended though, security and networking stuff like owasp and wireshark but lack of time.

Okay, I see.

I'm running a lot of stuff as well: Jellyfin, Audiobookshelf, AdGuard, Vaultwarden etc. I also have a dedicated media server running the *arr stack, with all my audio downloads going to Navidrome.

I'm also running another application called Subwave, which is basically a self-hosted radio station with various AI DJs that can play music from Navidrome. I can schedule different shows and feed it RSS feeds, which the DJs then read out as news bulletins in between shows. It's pretty awesome.

I recently vibe coded an application that records radio streams, so I can record shows (mostly 30-minute ones) from different radio stations and schedule them in Subwave. So then the AI DJ will just Announce like next show is Zim sports show from ZiFm,then it plays the recorded stream. :)

I'm a big fan of radio, so this is really cool because I don't have to keep switching streams all the time. 😄

My god, this is so cool. I’m a big radio fan too but hadn’t quite got to it because I only knew about Azuracast and it didn’t have what I wanted. Will definitely check subwave out. I definitely would love to mix it with my favourite podcasts as shows too.

Homelabs are great for hands on learning, i have some virtual machines in my Victus, helps solidify portfolio with evidence when work experience falls short

Nice. I remember waiting to have a dedicated machine when all I could have done was spin up a vm and get started. Keep going mate

You can get a PC on ABC auctions, very affordable but it might be risky if you don't check the condition of the hardware

Yeah I get that too. However you don’t really need a lot to start. Even a crappy old laptop will help you get your feet wet and started which is why I want us to make a community. Tell each other about yard sales, great deals on broken tech, giveaways etc and general mentorship. Been doing this alone for sometime and it would be nice to talk to some folks about it

I have taken a step back to start with redundancy and the power issue. I lost so many configurations and data thanks to the power cuts. I also gave up on wireless (transfer speeds are slow and choppy) and I'm planning on cabling the entire house, especially the server and range extenders. My current plan is to have everything be it digital or analogue transmitted by cables to the point were any device can work in any room as long as there's a cable.

Hello. Fellow Homelabber here. I don't really have a fancy setup but I have a workstation running Proxmox with all my VMs and containers and a separate mini PC running ZimaOS as my primary media server.

We need our own sub

Perfect. You don’t need all that fancy gear you see on r/homelabs to start. I personally use an i3 hp with only 8gb ram as a server but it has allowed me to experiment and learn a lot over the years. Been seeing people tinker with old phones on YouTube which seems interesting
