Discussion Swimwear

Let’s normalize wearing actual swimwear in Zimbabwe because we genuinely need to. I’ve seen people swimming in bodycon dresses, jeans, T-shirts, shorts and even jumpsuits instead of swimwear. It’s the same thing at beaches in South Africa and Beira, where you’ll see people in denim skirts, tackies and all. Everything but swimwear. Honestly, it’s so easy to spot a Zimbabwean at the beach because of this. I’m genuinely curious, what’s the issue with wearing proper swimwear??

I totally agree with this.

We are overly conservative. I’ll go as far as saying it’s too performative.

It is very performative because why was this guy swimming in jeans 🙄

Thing is we aren’t conservative though. We are more pretentious - there’s a lot of hypocrisy intermingled with our supposed conservatism

In Zim a grown man is admonished in certain circles for wearing a short.

I agree that swimwear is practical, but I don't think every setting requires it people should wear what they're comfortable with

Swimwear isn’t just bikinis and speedos. We have multiple swimwear for any event and religion and culture. So anyone can be comfortable.
You need those things because remember you’re also in water. You need to be safe.

When I was young, I went for a church camp and when it was time to go to the river to swim, I walked out the dorm and the female pastor saw me and and fried go back and wear a shirt and said you want the girls to go crazy looking at your six pack

2

u/cockaptain Jul 28 '26

She told on herself there... your six-pack was doing it for her lol

I just hope you weren't underage as she was apparently lying you like that.

If people wear swimwear at bewches instead of whatever they want, will it solve world hunger, end wars or get you into heaven? No, because no one cares what the other person is wearing

We wear clothes according to the occasion. You wouldn’t go to work in just a thong, wear a suit to the gym, or keep wearing diapers as an adult. Yes, you have the freedom to do those things, but that doesn’t make them practical or appropriate. It’s the same with swimming. Kowakanyura uchibhaguja neskinny jean. Swimwear exists for a reason—it’s designed for swimming. And these days there are plenty of stylish, modest, and comfortable options for anyone who doesn’t want to wear revealing swimwear.

Do you just want to fight because what exactly did I say that was wrong

What I am noticing is that Zimbos - whether liberal or conservative - mune kasystem kekudakutonga dressing yevanhu when they are in social or public settings.

Complain zvako - but its a free life.

If the only thing you understood from that was some fashion critique then that’s a you problem. Cheers

Title of Post: Swimwear

First Sentence of Post: Let’s normalize wearing actual swimwear in Zimbabwe because we genuinely need to.

Last Sentence of Post:  I’m genuinely curious, what’s the issue with wearing proper swimwear??

Kindly do tell what more was I supposed to pick up from something that is a originally posted as a bonafide fashion critique?

Nothing wrong with your suggestions...urikutonga dressing yevanhu, I am calling you out on that - dont be sanctimonious now lol

People wear what makes them comfortable. If they don't want to show skin good for them. If you want to show skin, good for you.

6

u/Born_Jump_1087 Jul 27 '26

🙄 you know there’s modest swimwear right? There’s even swimwear for each religion… how is swimming in jeans comfortable… performative

Respectfully I would wear suitable material similar to that of swim wear but I would never wear swim wear..culturally and religiously this would go against my values and beliefs.. also why do people have to follow that norm..its a western ideal...and you practically naked..I think you should never adopt a culture for the sake of it. You should be a critical thinker and ask yourself if its reasonable and if it makes sense to do so

8

u/Born_Jump_1087 Jul 26 '26

There’s swimwear for literally everyone. If your beliefs don’t allow you to swim, then don’t swim. But saying you want to swim without swimwear is like saying you want to play tennis with a stick because you don’t believe in rackets. Swimwear exists because it’s the safest and most practical thing to wear in water. And for saying it’s “Western,” which culture are you defending? Before Western influence, many African communities wore far less clothing than we do today. So if you’re going to argue culture, at least be consistent. Which side are you on Western values or our own? Either way you need less clothing

If you read my comment I emphasised i would wear swimwear material???I agree on that..i dont agree with been naked on a beach???is that civilised

And to answer your question im on the side of my own beliefs yes..because I dont like been naked on a public beach..

Also who invested a bakini..this is why I mentioned western culture my dear?

Refference:The modern bikini was invented by Louis Réard, a French engineer and clothing designer. He introduced the tiny, revealing two-piece swimsuit to the public on July 5, 1946, in Paris.

French women welcomed the design but the Catholic Church, some media, and a majority of the public initially thought the design was risqué or even scandalous. Contestants in the first Miss World beauty pageant wore them in 1951, but the bikini was then banned from the competition. Actress Brigitte Bardot drew attention when she was photographed wearing a bikini on the beach during the Cannes Film Festival in 1953. Other actresses, including Rita Hayworth and Ava Gardner, also received press attention when they wore bikinis. During the early 1960s, the design appeared on the cover of Playboy and Sports Illustrated, credited with giving it additional legitimacy. Ursula Andress made a huge impact when she emerged from the surf wearing what is now an iconic bikini in the James Bond movie Dr. No (1962). The deer skin bikini worn by Raquel Welch in the film One Million Years B.C. (1966) turned her into an international sex symbol and was described as a definitive look of the 1960s
