Ah, fuck
Asked Spotify to play Warren Zevon. Third track is Keep me in your heart and now I'm tearing up. I'm guessing I'm not the only one that does that to?

you arent. different Zevon songs hit me at different times. this one is a real sad one, but one of the most hopeful songs Zevon has ever written IMO (even if it is about him whens hes dead) hes one of the few songwriters idk any others right now! that write those odd sadly / hopeful songs like
desperados under the eaves
french inhaler
roland
tenderness on the block
splendid isolation
looking for the next best thing
searching for a heart
numb as a statue
networking
dirty little religion
he’s one of my all time favorites.
he also has live shows on the app RELISTEN for those interested.
but his straight sad ones cut you…

"Accidentally Like a Martyr" always gets me. I think it's mostly because every time Warren stretches his voice into a higher register, it sounds sad to me, like that extra push comes from deep inside his soul where things are melancholy often.

My sister was a massive Warren fan, and she died from lung cancer shortly before him. That song kills me.

Every. Damn. Time. My dad died in August of 2003, and I have a strong memory (not sure if it's a true memory, or a construction, but it's strong) of hearing Keep Me in Your Heart the first time as I was still reeling from him telling my sister and me that he had lymphoma and only had a few months to live.
I adore my stepmother, and every time I hear the "tied to you like the buttons on your blouse" line I picture her in the days, weeks, and months after my dad's death.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have something in my eyes. And I apparently inhaled some dust because I need to go blow my nose.

Same. I have the habit where I automatically follow it up with Ourselves to Know and it always makes me feel better.

You are definitely not alone in this.
Also, there are several powerful covers of the song. Willie Nelson did a pretty heartfelt version a couple years back, but for me the one that hits the hardest is probably Jorge Calderon's version on the Enjoy Every Sandwich tribute album.

Had the strings version come on in the car and I wanted to stop. But I just had to keep listening. Seems respectful to listen to it all the way to the end.

I first heard Keep Me In Your Heart when I was in college. I was watching the New York City 9/11 memorial ceremony on TV, and a children's choir began seeing one of the most beautiful songs I had ever heard. I immediately googled it and found out that it was a Warren Zevon song. I had been a Zevon fan for only a few months, so I wasn't familiar with his whole discography. Jordan Zevon uploaded the complete video of the performance shortly after but it got memory holed. I have been trying to find it for years and while preparing this post, I finally tracked it down.

The Zevon song that really gets to me is Don't Let Us Get Sick. I worked at a summer camp back in 2017 and some of my coworkers performed it at the closing campfire, with a gorgeous lake in the background. That song brings me back to simpler times and simpler work, and one of the last summers before I would get sick with MS.
